Breaker Morant Dir: Bruce Beresford Starring: Edward Woodward, John Waters, Bryan Brown, Lewis Fitz-Gerald How many blatantly PRO-war movies are there? Really? The Green Berets for sure, but when stacked up alongside the fervent anti-war sentiment of Full Metal Jacket, Platoon, et. al it's easy to find one and hard to not agree with their stance, especially given our current economy crippling, morale sucking, world alienating affair in the middle east. Breaker Morant tells the tale of Australian war-horse and renaissance man Harry "Breaker" Morant, who, supposedly, acting under orders, executes prisoners of war during the Boer Conflicts in South Africa circa 1886. Breaker and his co-defendants in a military court martial, arranged to placate political unrest and bring about a speedy resolution to the conflict without drawing even more enemies to the table, has a verdict before proceedings ever begin. And yet throughout the course of the film, the noble lawyer who was given but a day to prepare a defense as compared to the six months the prosecution spent gathering witnesses, fights and makes a compelling argument that these men did only what was necessary to fight the enemy. One quote stands out firm in the entire film; "The barbarities of war are seldom committed by abnormal men. The tragedy of war is that these horrors are committed by normal men in abnormal situations." As a courtroom drama, the film has great merit, as the performances are solid and enthused. It is hard not to become emotionally invested in the fates of these characters. But as an anti-war statement, the film is stunning. Very few people who don't regularly engage in Historical research know anything at all about the Boer War. It's one of those conflicts important only to those who fought in it, and it was a war that was fought solely on the basis of political posturing. What the film does well is illustrate exactly why EVERY war is done for the exact same reasons. And one would be hard pressed to argue otherwise. The truth is that an army or militia should be intended as a reactive force, because when that force forces conflict on another, they must pray that they win because history books are filled with vilified aggressors. 8/10 |
