Today the BBC's Future Media and Technology department announced a collaboration with Nintendo UK that makes the popular BBC iPlayer available via the Nintendo Wii games console.

Erik Huggers of the BBC revealed that Nintendo Wii users will be able to stream their favourite BBC programmes directly to their televisions via their console.

"Working with Nintendo marks another exciting milestone for the BBC iPlayer," Huggers said. "It underlines our commitment to reaching new audiences by making the BBC iPlayer available on as many platforms as possible."
A visitor in the BBC Worldwide stand at the MIPTV conference David Yarnton, General Manager of Nintendo UK, told the audience at the annual MIPTV (International Television Programme Market) conference in Cannes, "BBC iPlayer on Wii will offer Wii owners another reason to turn their console on every day and adds to the already established non-gaming content on the Wii that includes news and weather channels."

Once the iPlayer service for the Wii is live, a notification message will be sent to all Wii consoles in the UK currently connected to the internet.
