We Are SEX BOB-OMB!

Casanova (2005)
Directed by Lasse Hallström
Starring : Heath Ledger, Sienna Miller, Jeremy Irons, Oliver Platt, Natalie Dormer

I will admit that it's kind of hard to watch this film and not feel a tinge of deep sadness. As with most of Heath Ledger's work, the guy even in his less-than-oscar-worthy films comes across as a very talented and magnetic screen presence.

In Casanova, a comedic and lighthearted portrayal of the titular libertine, Ledger tries to woo and seduce the entirety of the female population of Venice and mostly succeeds. Then, as can happen to any man, he meets the woman he's willing to give up all other women for. And of course she's a feminist icicle who will have none of his lusty advances.

So he does what any man does, he lies and hopefully the girl will grow attached to one of those lies enough to fall for him.

The movie has an air of predictability but the script has enough with and charm to hold it afloat. Alot of the blame (ne, credit) falls on Ledger, who plays off his supporting characters, including an always entertaining Oliver Platt who's dry wit balances with Casanova's exorbitance.

What also helps the film is the fact that it is beautifully shot and gives the period element a crisp and clean picture that is amazing to watch.

Oh, and the women are all freakin' hot. Sienna Miller looks very close to if not at her best here. No wonder the guy fell for her.

Seriously, the film does not deserve the seething hatred it has accumulated. It gets slammed for being historically inaccurate and shallow. And true, the film isn't exactly deep but it is entertaining on multiple levels.

And it's one more movie that proves exactly how tragic Heath's death was. Because every role he played was different, and this is no exception.

7/10
