Street Kings Directed by David Ayer Starring : Keanu Reeves, Chris Evans, Forest Whitaker, Hugh Laurie In case you haven't heard, Los Angeles has dirty cops. Honest to God man, and some of them are racist! Yeah, I know, how could this have remained a secret for so long? David Ayer is no stranger to the dirty-LA genre having written Training Day, Dark Blue, Harsh Times and, yes of course, Fast and the Furious. With help from cop drama writer extraordinaire James Ellroy, with whom he also collaborated with in the testament to the awesomeness of Kurt Russell that is Dark Blue, director David Ayer returns to his usual stomping ground to further stomp the living hell out of the dirty cop film. The film begins almost identically to Dark Blue, with our lead character drunk in a dingy room moving from drunk to hungover and back again. Part of what brings this film down, aside from Keanu Reeves yet again being able to play anyone or anything other than Keanu Reeves, is that the whole ordeal feels like something that we've seen before. With good reason, because we have. But this time around the violence is ramped up to eleven and because we know what to expect, we can shut down our brains and enjoy Forest Whitaker and Hugh Laurie chew scenery like it's a juicy steak. So, despite being a bit predictable, the film is never boring. Every quote-unquote "twist" that comes at us we are more than willing to take because we know it'll be entertaining. And in the end that's all this film is. No matter how many times the screenplay tries to throw us some sort of morality lesson, it's easily brushed aside in favor of amazing squib-work. Make no mistake, this is a mile-a-minute blood-soaked cop drama and it'll probably wind up on my shelf for a LA cop marathon down the line right alongside Ayer's other films. I have to agree with what someone said about this film. I forget who so pardon my not giving credit, but he stated that with shows like the Shield on tv nowadays, movies like this lose their punch. Aside from a few wet bullet hits and some f-bombs, there's nothing here that couldn't be found on that FX show...including Forest Whitaker. 6/10 Edited by Salty, Apr 14 2008, 05:53 PM.

Just a man with a saw.

Granted, Michael Chiklis showing up in the movie would have make it that much more awesome... |
