A link to this old dog book was posted to one of my local show boards. I thought people might enjoy looking at it. I have opened it to flats and curlies. http://www.archive.org/stream/dogsofallnations00masorich#page/12/mode/1up
Enjoy!
PS haven't found the Labs yet, and there is only a brief mention so far of the goldens under flatties.

Swimmer puppies

I just wondered if anyone had ever come across this condition.
One of our JRT puppies had it. When they were around 2 weeks old I noticed that one of them just wasnt moving proplerly, all her limbs tended to be splayed out to the sides but she was putting on weight and thriving. After a visit to the vet who confirmed the condition and told me to think about having her put to sleep
. I was really upset and couldnt bring myself to do it so I decided to give her a chance and have a go at helping her myself. After doing a lot of research on the net ( and there is lots of useful info out there about this condition ) I started swimming her in the bath 3 times a day, and made a jumper out of a sock and stuffed it with cotton wool balls so she had to feed on her side rather than on her tummy. The hardest part was keeping her warm and snug after her swims, after all I didnt want her to catch a chill.
She is now very well and is running around with the others and her legs are totally normal I'm really thrilled at her progress. She has a fabulous home to go to
with members of our family where they will continue her swimming and love her to bits.
So please, if you ever have a puppy with this condition all is not lost there are lots of things to do to help. Most swimmer puppies go on to live a very normal life.

RETRIEVER STORY

At the last show we went to I met up with some friends who told me about this wonderful Golden Retriever.
They live in a very small village and one of the neighbours had a golden retriever who sadly had passed away. The elderly goldie owner went to the post office and whilst waiting to be served got talking to the local pub landlord.
THe landlord asked where the dog was and that he hadn't seen him lately. THe landlord was told that the dog had passed away and then said " That's just awful, we shall really miss him."
THe dogs owner was a little confused, and asked how did he know his beloved dog.
Apparently every eve after the owners had gone to bed their dog would let itself out of the dog flap and make the 2 mile journey to the pub, where he would be given a packet of crisps and a drink of milk and then walk back home.
THis happened most evenings over a period of a few years and the goldie owner was totally unaware.
Just amazing !!!!

Sharing a bone

For the last week I have been dogsitting a 7 month puppy Ruby. Ruby and Aggie became devoted best friends , Maggie would sometimes join in or report if they were getting too rowdy or on my couch.
Today she used an old marrow bone to engage Ruby in a game. Later she got the bone and presented it to Ruby in the hope that Ruby would desist from her lunch take the bone so she (Maggie) could get at the puppy kibble. No flies on Ruby though. She grabbed the bone and put it in her bowl!
My query is is how often do dogs share bones? I haven;t seen Maggie do this with another dog before but she will often present the bone to me or visitors. Normally she would play a possessive game with it and Aggie genrally makes a wide berth but today even Aggie joined in the game

Maggie and her new coat

A few of you may know that my curlyxlab performs the task of a medical assistance dog for me. I am on O2 15+ hours a day and she lets me know when I am not well, need extra O2 or the canula and tubing become misplaced overnight.
Maggie who I got as a pup does this as she has a very close bond with me. If I leave her at home say when I go shopping or even for the mail she escapes looking for me. I have had her dog-sat but nobody volunteers twice. She becomes too anxious. So I had taken to taking her everywhere. Which is handy particularly when there are stairs as she helps me up. Plus if I overnight anywhere she MUST be with me.
I had tried to get her officially recognized but brick walls were put in place. Too old, not pure bred, we only use pound dogs, we don't train private dogs, we don't help people in your state....so I decided to wing it mostly with her. I also found that I had equal rights legislation mostly on me side. As it stands at the moment there is no national body in Australia that recognises assistance dogs or trains them to a universal national standard. There is also not one body who looks after the welfare of such assistance dogs.
Over Easter I had Maggie accompany me and camp at the Exhibition grounds in Canberra for the National Folk Festival. She had been before but not camped, this year I had a vest made for her.
She acquitted her duties admirably. Handled the large crowds and music well. She is still nervous around balloons and whip crackers, she attended 2 balls, numerous dances and concerts and could be found in the session bar well after midnight each night.
She accompanied me shopping and found the meat isle at the supermarket most interesting! I did become ill and there were no questions at the doctors or chemist about her presence.
For the trip I had a new coat or vest made for Maggie. With her name the medical sign and purpose embroidered on it. Also reflector strips so drunks couldn;t claim they didn;t see her if they fell over her! IN the pockets were the spare plastic bags.

One of my neighbors stopped by and saw Iris outside playing with a new toy. My neighbor said to me, "you know they say you should stop giving a dog toys to play with when they reach 6 months, or they never grow up"..
toys

Does anyone know of some really good toys?
Zoe absolutely adores toys and she will get upset if she cant find one. I've been told to take away tennis balls as they're wearing down her bottom canine
Not sure why, but was told that rubber balls would be better for her than the tennis balls. She will play with anything and everything so giving her other toys will not be an issue.
Anyone really happy with certain toys? She never seems to destroy toys. I have squeaky balls which are a real hit but they are so noisy when 2 dogs constantly squeak them!
BTW they both have a Kong each.

Cheap Dog Beds

I went into this shop in Vic (they are apparently in NZ as well) after I stumbled upon a catalogue the other day.
I got two dog beds like the ones in the downloadable catalogue here.
They are made primarily as an indoor/outdoor beanbag, but I have got a single bed foam mattress from clarke rubber for half price and we will be able to get a medium and small sized bed out of that foam.
Right now my guys have Snooza Cuddlers which are polar fleece and will be too hot for the summer, I was also looking for something much thicker because Geordie constantly sleeps on his back. I have wasted lots of money on dog beds that end up flat as pancakes in a month or so, so thought I would pass this on!
Note that the foam will be hard to get into the covers but I am going to unpick one seam and sew it back up again, just call me obsessed.
Mel.
Edit: I also picked up a 'dog is my co-pilot' sticker for 95 cents, so if anyone wants one, let me know I will be going back there to get another bed cover.

Retriever developement and History

We have recently had a bloke join the Murray group who has a major interest in retriever history. He has a blog which some of you may find interesting at
http://retrieverman.wordpress.com/
He has some interesting theories which members may find interesting or even controversial! He is very interested in maintaining function of dogs.
He actually found the Murray group via You Tube... it pays to advertise...or at least have a presence on all forms of internet I can think of!
He is leaning towards the theory that the Murray is an earlier form of retriever that has only survived and been developed in Australia.
