![]() Declaration of a Republic Great celebrations went on across the nation of Thule today as Kuupik Møller signed the Declaration of the first Thulian Reoublic. There has never been democracy in Thule and the people celebrated as Republic Day was declared a public holiday. The nine Clan leaders have been allowed to keep their titles but may not pass it on to their children. Two have formally given up their title and became citizen's of the Republic. Long discussions were held between Kuupik and about 50 people on how the new nation would be run. The nation was seperated into 7 Provinces. These Provinces will have an elected Governor who acts as the Provinces Head of Government. A vote was held and a Bicarmel legislative assembley was decided upon with a directly elected President as head of state and government, elected every 5 years. The lower house will be the Althing. It will have laws to enact legislation, withdraw laws all bills except those that will change the way the nation is run must begin in the Althing. The Althing will have 66 elected members who will serve four year terms. The second house will be known as the Senate. Two elected members will be sent from each state to the Seante which will have 14 members. They will serve eight year terms and have greater powers than the house. The Senate has to approve all appointments short of the President and can veto a Presidential order with 13 out of 14 members. The Governors will have the status of a Senator and will be elected at the same time. For the immediate future Kuupik will stay as Head of Government but not state. He will be interim President until the people belive they are ready to elect their government for the first time. Already political parties have begun to form. |
