Location: The Supreme Court in Capitale Reale, Otrenia Time: 1200 hrs The trials of the Socialist agitators that had started riots after the banning of socialist and communist political parties had been ongoing since the last parliamentary elections. The defendants, three socialist Otrenians the alleged organizers of the riots, were accused of disrupting His Majesty's peace, incitement to riot, vandalism, trespassing, and of organizing an unlawful assembly. After many delays and appeals the case had reached the Supreme Court. The case had been closely followed by the media, and the government, as everyone was concerned about the outcome of so sensitive a case, given the current political climate of Renatia. Finally though, the jury had come to a decision, the Chief Justice, Sir Antonio Forenzo, addressed them. "Have you reached a verdict upon which you are all agreed?" "Yes, my Lord." "On the charges of vandalism and trespassing, how do you find?" "Guilty." Half of the courtroom, which was filled with socialist sympathizers, was in an uproar as soon as he had finished speaking. The Chief Justice had to bang his gavel several times to bring the courtroom to order. "On the charges of organizing and unlawful assembly, incitement to riot, and of disrupting His Majesty's peace, how do you find?" "Guilty." The courtroom exploded. Shouts and threats could be heard from both the socialist side of the room and the side seating the prosecution. The gavels of the Justices had no effect on the crowd, the court police had to be called in to clear the court. Over the outraged cries of the people being forced out of the room, the Chief Justice could be heard. "Then, by the power vested in me by His Majesty the King, I sentence you to be detained in confinement at His Majesty's pleasure, for a period of no less than 15 years and no more than 25 years." |
