The Democratic Republic of Aus'tiana had existed for 24 years without change to its constitution, a cornerstone of the democratic powers of the world and consistently one of the major shapers of international politics. It was founded after a nation-wide revolution overthrew the various dictatorial regimes ruling the nation at the time, and had since become a lighthouse for democratic values and principles around the globe. The era of the Unity Party and Baltar Sha'krios shaped the nation into what it was, and if not for events and factors outside the political and social realm, pure democracy would have continued unchallenged and unspoiled. The Aus'tianian Energy Crisis spanned the years from 54 to 56Æ, and would change the face of the nation forever. With the supply of electricity no longer guaranteed by the government, people began to lose faith in the system that had up until then provided for their basic needs, and now turned to alternatives to replace what was in their eyes a flawed establishment. With the irresponsible spending and poor financial planning of the New Republican Party, ideas like market capitalism being flawed and the ineffectiveness of lassaiz-faire economics were promoted by the leftist opposition, a position quickly grabbed up and proliferated by the nation's media industry. The people wanted change, any change, that would in their eyes be satisfactory if it merely put the rightist ruling party out of power rather than fixed the entirety of their socioeconomic debacle. Through the use of skilled propaganda and the rapid growth of trade unions, the inner circles of the Aus'tianian National Communist Party and the Marxist-Socialist Party of Aus'tiana sought to take up the opportunity in the political climate to put their programs at the forefront of the nation's attention. While both parties ran a rigorous campaign, they had known that working against one another was futile and counterproductive, and had sought counsel to determine the best course of action. While national communism was a more popular school of thought over Marxist-socialism, it had been decided that they would spearhead the campaign efforts as well as the new government. Out of concern over failing to gain a governable majority, the leadership of the two leftist parties engaged in discussion with the Or'lesian Democrat Party (a rebirth of the northern secessionist movement) to see if some agreement could be reached regarding the role of Or'lais in the new Democratic Socialist Republic. The coalition government had made three decisions in the week it had gained power, culminating the talks behind the scenes into action. ![]() National News - Nachda 15th, 57Æ Chancellor, coalition, announce major constitutional changes Aus'tiana to become a Democratic Socialist Republic ![]() The Chancellor is shown here with major ANCP leaders In an emergency session of the National Assembly, the Chancellor and major party officials announced they would push forward multiple constitutional changes that will change the face of the nation forever. The former Democratic Republic was dissolved today to make room for the Democratic Socialist Republic, the new name of the government of Aus'tiana. The chancellery was dissolved and replaced with the position of chairman, the National Assembly replaced with the People's National Council, the flag changed, and limits on government influence in the economy lifted. These events have been hailed as the most significant political shift in the nation since the revolution almost 25 years ago. Two points of the series of decisions made by the coalition are now facing heavy opposition however, as the banning of all political parties but the ANCP and the MSPA has been called "the end of Aus'tianian democracy" and the referendum called for Or'lesian secession "the end of Aus'tianian national unity". Riots between unionist and secessionist supporters have broken out in Estran, and demonstrators supporting the various recently banned parties have begun a nation-wide protest against the move. Not all reaction has been negative however, as supporters of the new Democratic Socialist Republic have also taken to the streets in celebration, sporting the new flag and calling an end to "Aus'tianian-style fascism". We'll provide coverage of all major changes in the DSR as they take place. OOC this post has been retconned. The government is still led by a coalition between the National Communist Party, the Marxist-Socialist Party, and the Orlesian Democrats, however there have been no constitutional changes and the flag being used is de jure rather than been officially changed. This thread will still cover the (somewhat minor in comparison) changes the new coalition is bringing about. Edited by Freeman, 28 Feb 2011, 06:46 AM.

Aus'tianian Globe and Times - Wistar 17th, 59Æ Industry returning to its former capacity Factories and plants rekindled as more sectors nationalized ![]() In a report published by the Department of Trade, Labour, and Industry it was announced that the nation's industry is on track to returning to its former production capacity. The department established a program last year to begin nationalizing factories and workplaces left vacant by Aus'tianian business and corporations that left during the energy crisis. The announcement was made possible by the completion of the hydroelectric megastructure in the southeast province of Fir'elin. The dam, which took six years and hundreds of billions of arits, now accounts for 76% of the nation's electricity generation. While some factories, especially to those areas in the far northeast, have yet to gain access to the power supplied by the project, it has already begun to reboot the national industry in the south. Critics say that the lack of power projects being constructed in the north and the lack of a plan to privatize the production facilities in the future will be detrimental to the economy in the near future, citing the continually rising government debt, which has been valued at an estimated 126% of the nation's GDP. |
