Lord Chancellor Jurij Karas woke up as someone knocked on his office door.
"Come in" he muttered and rubbed his eyes while the door opened and the Lord Chief of Police Varas Irin entered.

"More riots have taken place in Massoj and Ru Lijen. My forces have tried to break them up, but they keep getting larger for every day. We lost two men when our forces clashed with the rioters in Masovis, but we've been able to break them up without to many civilian deaths. We had to arrest some journalists though."
He delivered the reports with a neutral tone and Jurij glared at him. There was no sign on him that he had been without sleep for the last few days, and it was widely spread rumour that the Chief of Police was in fact a vampire.

"So what you're saying is that things are basically going to hell?"
"Something like that, yes"
"And what are we going to do?"

Jurij thought that he could for a second see a worried expression on Varas face, but it dissappeared so fast that he began to think it was just his imagination.

"Honestly my lord, I don't know. This is the worst situation we've been in for centuries and it doesn't seem to get any better."

They both knew why. The fall of Nentsia had unleashed waves of unrest and riots over the Kingdom. Earlier they had often managed to keep the liberals in check with their worn out warnings 'if we get divided or show any weakness the Nentsian will strike!'. But with the destruction of the Nentsian state they had nothing to lean on anymore. The republican victory had inspired the liberal groups of Runikal and demonstrations occured daily, demanding freedoms and the right to vote. They were often led by Nentsian refugees that had fled the Federovist regime and now organized their new countrymen against the High King and his government.

"I guess we have to report to the His Majesty" Jurij said carefully. "He and the high council will have to decide how we shall deal with this"

Guj Leris waved his blue and white banner in the air. The town square was filled with people, thousands of ordinary citizens that taken to the streets to fight for the rights they deserved. The police forces stood at the side, holding up their riot shields and batons. They were severely outnumbered and it was clear that they were not eager to get into conflict with the demonstrators.

"Guj" said Manos Uljan, one of Guj's close friends. "Vladimir wants to talk with us"
He nodded and followed his friend through the crowds. Vladimir Sergeyev was the man behind the demonstrations. He was a charismatic young man that had fled from Nentsia a few years earlier, and since then engaged himself in the Runikalian liberal movements.

They found him standing beneath an old statues, around him was a group of other men.
"Ah, Guj and Manos! We've been waiting for you!" He turned back to the other men. "Comrades, I believe you know why I've called you here. You are among the most influential people within the Liberal People's Party organisation here, when you march the others will follow. This is one of the most important events in the history of Runikal. This is when we decide the future of this nation. And we will do what must be done. Comrades, we shall lead these people to Ru Vassei! We shall march to the Royal Castle and we shall make the leaders listen to us! It will not be easy, they will try to stop us with all their might. But freedom isn't free, if we want our rights we have to take them! And when we all march together, not a single force in the world can stop us! Are you with me?"

A single cheer broke out from the assembled men. As Sergeyev began marching towards the front of crowd, the others began to gather the other people. Soon the entire crowd was following the young Nentsians lead, while waving their banners and shouting.
"To Vassei!"
"For freedom!"
"They shall not stop us!"

The police where shoved aside by the sheer force of thousands of people, and they retreated away rather than risk getting dragged into a fight. Their commander sent frantic messages back to the capital.

The Great March had begun.

It didn't take long to assemble the nobles council. They had already gathered in capital, most of them to complain to the Lord Chancellor about the inadequate protection the police forces had offered against the rioters.

Now they sat in their seats and glared at Jurij Karas, because while he supposedly had the authority to do such things as assembling the council and act as the executive leader of the Kingdom, no one expected a man of such low noble birth to actually use it. Jurij himself tried to actively ignore their hateful looks, he hadn't asked for this to happen. In fact he had been very happy when the High King had appointed him Lord Chancellor since it promised a long and secure future of dull routine work from which he could later resign in honour and live a easy life thanks to impressive salary.

Instead he know found himself in the middle of national crisis, and as he stood here trapped between the rioters and the lords he felt like he was way over his head.

A guard in ceremonial uniform entered the chambers placed himself next to the great doors.
"My lords! Rise for His Majesty the High King of Runikal!"
The lords rose up from their seats and bowed their heads. Jurij bowed deeply, he knew he could not take the same liberties as the high nobility. High King Voris entered the room accompanied by a group of royal guards. He was a tall and impressive man, dressed in his finest ceremonial gown. Although he was getting old he moved swiftly and tirelessly, followed by his son, Crown Prince Erij. He took seat in the throne placed so that he could see both the Lord Chancellor and the Noble's council, and Erij sat down in the chair beside him. The king nodded and the nobles quickly took place in their chairs. Jurij of course still stood up, since he had no seat.

"Now tell us, Lord Chancellor, why you have gathered this meeting?"
Jurij bowed for the king again before answering him.
"Runikal is facing large troubles. The collapse of the Nentsian Tsardom has caused the liberal organisations to rise up against your rule, your majesty. They do no longer fear that a divided Runikal will cause an invasion, and they believe that they can overthrow your majesty, like happened to our neighbour. Thousands of people are taking to the streets, attacking police and causing havoc and it is now to much for our forces to handle. Furthermore I just got a report that a huge group of demonstrators have begun marching her from Massoj"

Silence filled the room after the Lord Chancellors. Finally the High King broke the silence.
"And what do you propose we do?"
Jurij braced himself, knowing what response he'd get.
"Your majesty, I propose that we negotiate with them. If we give them some democratic compromise and maybe gave them some more liberties, thye'd probably..."
"Madness!" shouted Duke Ilnisk, one of the most important council members. "If we give them a finger, they'll take the whole arm! Your majesty, we mustn't encourage this kind of disloyal behaviour! The people were given their roles in the world by the Creator himself!"
"And what do you propose, Ilnisk?"
"I propose that we call in the army. Surround the castle and keep these rioters at bay. Eventually they'll have to give up, knowing that they can't challenge your rule"

The king leaned back and thought about it for a while. Finally he rose his hand, as he often did when he said something important.
"We have decided to go with the Duke Ilnisk's proposal. Lord Chancellor, send for the army and have them protect the Castle. I don't want any bloodshed, but the rioters mustn't enter the castle. Those are our orders"
Jurij bowed deeply to acknowledge the king's orders, but within him he felt a sudden dread, knowing that something bad was going to happen because of this.

During the last days people had arrived from every direction to take place in the siege. Thousands of people chanted their demands for freedom and democracy, led by the members of the Liberal People’s Party, who waved their blue and white flags while shouting encouragement to demonstrators.

Police had placed up barricades to lead the rioters away from residential areas, but otherwise they hadn’t interfered. The royal army had surrounded the Castle and made sure that none of the demonstrators could get close, often using violence to scare them off.

Vladimir Sergeyev held frequent speeches and his words gave the assembled the confidence they needed to continue on, Guj often thought that without Vladimir the demonstrations would have already ended by now. The government had still not tried to talk with them, the doors and windows of the royal castle remained closed. Rumours had begun to circulate, claiming that the king had left the country to gather foreign soldiers to strike at the demonstrators, but Vladimir claimed there was no truth to it.

In the end, Guj was never prepared for what would happen. He was leading a group of people in a protest song, when they suddenly heard gunfire. The people around him stopped their singing and begun to look around nervously. The gunfire continued, now followed by terrified screams. More gunfire erupted from other directions and soon Guj found himself pushed around as the demonstrators tried to run away. Guj tried to see if he could find Manos, but he couldn’t see him anywhere in the panic-stricken crowd. As the pushing continued he lost his foothold and fell to the ground, terrified he expected to be trampled, but the area around him was soon almost cleared. Soon the square was instead filled with police officers, outfitted with riot shields and batons. Guj tried to climb back to his feet, but a police pushed him down. He was then beaten repeatedly by three officers before being dragged semi-unconscious to a waiting van. Once inside, he awakened again and looked at the other prisoners. Among them was a man he recognised as a fellow LPP member.
“Karos, did they get you too? Did Vladimir get away”
When Karos lifted his head Guj saw that tears were streaming down his face.
“Vladimir is dead, Guj. They shot Vladimir! Why did they shoot him?”

For a while it seemed like the protesters wouldn't leave, not even after being shattered and having their leadership captured. But in the end they soon started to disappear, the cowards slithered home when the smelled fire. Those that remained were to few to cause any real trouble, and would soon be dealt with as well.

Crown Prince Erij looked out over the royal square. The police had formed up better barricades and the besiegers had become the besieged. He didn't doubt that they would give up soon, especially if his father threw them a bone in his usual squeamish manner. They should be thankful to be alive and not in prison, he figured. He had been watching some of the interrogations of the captured LPP members and he found it astonishing how strong they felt for their leader, the Nentsian Vladimir Sergeyev. They either cried or vowed vengeance against those responsible for his death. Of course, Erij knew that Vladimir wasn't dead, but he had ordered the men not to tell them. He wanted them to remain split and devastated.

Sometimes he thought back to that day, the day the liberals had named "Black Tonday", and wondered if he had acted correctly. The Opelikans always said that killing or hurting others was wrong, but he liked to think that he was doing the right thing. Sure, some people died and others were wounded, but it was for a good cause. Rebellious maniacs can't be allowed to try and overthrow the King, they can't be allowed to go against the creator's will. He thought this thoughts and felt at ease. But almost every night he woke up drenched in sweat and with the screams from those killed ringing in his ears.

It had begun to look grim for the demonstrators. After the military had opened fire and scattered the crowds on Black Tonday, many had left the city, afraid to continue the struggle. But a large part had remained, no matter how many were wounded or arrested. The military had withdrawn and rumours circulated that they were performing an internal investigation to find out who was behind the shooting. The police had strengthened their control, stopping people from joining the demonstrations, but not arresting anyone else.

Manos Uljan wondered why he was still there. His friends had been arrested and Vladimir was shot. He was nearly the only LPP leader still remaining, and had become sort of a leader for the demonstration. Sometimes he thought that he only remained because he was the only reason anyone else stayed. As long as there were someone they could rally behind, they would stay until the end of times.

Manos hid his worries, took on his most determined face and jumped up on a crate to lead the demonstrators into a new series of chants, when he heard arguing and shocked shouts from one of the entrances to the square. He looked towards it, afraid that it was a new police raid. What he saw made his jaw drop.

The police abandoned their barricades and opened up a hole through their lines, despite the angry yelling from their sergeants. Through the hole marched a long line of Opelikan monks. They carried signs and banners, bearing holy symbols. They marched slowly and determined through the demonstrators, who quickly moved to let them pass. As per a silent and invisible signal, a song struck up from the monks, a song that Manos remembered as the “Prayer of Mercy”; through the song they asked the creator why there was death and suffering.

It didn’t take long until Manos realised the importance of the Opelikans arrival. It meant that the church supported their struggle and protested against the oppressive practices of the King. Manos smiled and lifted his fist into the air. Victory!

Fort Ularon was famous for housing Runikals political prisoners. It was here that the captured LPP members and other demonstrators had been brought by the Ru Vassei police.

Crown Prince Erij walked along the battlements together with the Lord Chief of Police, Varis Irin.
“As you know, your highness, his majesty has decided to release the prisoners from the demonstrations, as an act of good will”
“I know Varis, I tried to persuade him to change his mind, but he had made his mind. I think it’s madness, they are all violent enemies of the state, it has been clearly shown!”
“Well, sire, we can’t go against the will of the King”
“Of course not. But we must be able to circumvent it somehow; I’m assured that you know of a way”
“Actually, your highness, I think I know something. It’s not perfect, but better than nothing”
“Well, what do you have in mind?”
“As you know, may members of the opposition are Runik-Nentsians, political fugitives that escaped Nentsia, and then began organizing the liberal groups here”
“Yes, yes, but what has that got to do with it?”
“What it means is that an important part of the democratic group are in fact not citizens”
“Hang on, they aren’t Runikan citizens you say?”
“No, they are only residents. And residency can be revoked, especially if the resident in question is considered a criminal”
“So we could throw them out, send them back to Nentsia? Yes, a good plan. We’ll free them and get rid of them.”
“And we can do even better, if we were to start recognizing Nentsia as a safe location, what with the Federovists deposed and a stable government in charge, the Nentsian refugees would no longer have a reason to stay here.”
“So we could get rid of all the Nentsians in the nation as well!”
“Well, all those that aren’t citizens or permanent residents”
“Should be enough. But what do we need to do this?”
“I can handle the deportations, that’s no problem. And to proclaim Nentsia safe we need authorisation from a royal. Like yourself your highness. The Chancellor will be pleased with getting the opportunity, of course he’ll think it will better the relations with Nentsia if we deem their situation stable, not considering the effects of it.”
“Varis, you’ve got a wonderful mind. If you make this happen, I’ll give you an estate!”
“I live to serve, your highness.”
