등잔 밑이 어둡다

''It's darkest underneath the lampstand''

- OPERATION PANTHERA TIGRIS -
Central Agabia,
The Democratic Republic of Myeongju,

''Jug-eum-ui Gyegog'' - (Death Valley) Myeongju-Gotterland border
0323 Hours

A unit from the 17th Regiment of the 3rd Airborne Division, the Han Regiment, prepared itself for the jump. They were the finest of the finest, the elite of the Myeongju military - the ultimate warriors. Sun-1 was the team leader. The elite commandos from the Han Regiment wore snow camouflage, as their mission took place in the snowy mountains of Death Valley, the valley that separated Myeongju from Gotterland.

The Han Regiment was specialized special operations - now they were sent for special reconnaissance. The men put on their white ski masks, helmets, oxygen masks and ballistic goggles. Their unit consisted of seven men in total. With them, they carried advanced communication gear, thermal optics, silenced full automatic assault rifles, body armor and military photo cameras.

''Time to jump!'' said a man on the plane. They chose to use a plane instead of a chopper, as a plane could fly higher - and make less noise. Team Tigris from the Han regiment took the jump - seven figures disappeared in the dark. Their parachutes were black as well.

Sun-1 was the first operative to land. He was responsible for this mission. He had to collect images for the Directorate of Foreign Intelligence. That was his task. Sun-1 had sworn eternal loyalty to the Supreme Commander. He would never fail his leader.

When the others had landed as well, they reached for a compass. There existed no maps of this area. It was perhaps one of the most deserted places of Renatia. Perhaps also the deadliest. It was the coldest desert in Renatia, surrounded by huge mountains and peaks. There was snow, but that snow was very old snow. The last time it had snowed here - could be one year ago.

The team began to advance through the valley, which was called ''Death Valley'' in Myeongju. At the other end of the valley, was Gotterland. From there, they could look down from the mountains all the way to the Gotterland lowlands. With special cameras, they would picture possible military locations.

Back in Myeongju, the MRS Golae was being loaded. It was the largest carrier in service of the All-National Naval Force. It offered space to 72 aircraft on the deck. Two more carriers were being prepared for invasion. 34 000 marines, including the ''Blood and Honor'' brigade were mobilized. They would soon receive their instructions for the invasion, and begin with military practice and rehearsal.

In San-Eseosi, entire units of the Political Corps were prepared to serve as the rear column to crush any disobedience in the conquered areas. The war machine was on the move - within weeks, it would shake Central Agabia upside down. Pyong had plans.

- OPERATION PANTHERA TIGRIS -
Central Agabia,
The Democratic Republic of Myeongju,

''Jug-eum-ui Gyegog'' - (Death Valley) Myeongju-Gotterland border
0442 Hours

Team Tigris moved through the mountains of the Death Valley - the elite operatives were officially on Gotterland territory. With camera equipment, they made pictures of the entire region. With advanced military equipment, the team spotted settlements in the west of the country. The mountains offered a great spot to observe from, but they were also a major obstacle for the invasion.
The team had completed its mission, and returned to the extraction point where a military chopper picked them up. As Sun-1 sat in the chopper, he realized that their mission was just a prologue to the real ''Operation Panthera Tigris''...

- PREPARATIONS -
Central Agabia,
The Democratic Republic of Myeongju,

''Jinjuman'' - Myeongju Naval port
0602 Hours

Giant megastructures were being controlled by disciplined dock workers of the Myeongjan navy. A Political Officer was standing on a platform, screaming through a megaphone at the dock workers: ''The Supreme Commander is ordering you and me to prepare for war. Listen to our Leader. You and me must work our ass off, for the great Republic of Myeongju. Our enemy is also well prepared. Serve your country, to prepare yourself for the war well too...''

The man in the Jajonsim Party uniform kept repeating his propaganda message all day long, as ammunition was carried to the ships and guns were mounted on the decks. Three enormous Aircraft Carriers were being prepared for the war effort, and hundreds of other ships. The Myeongjan navy was huge, and had nearly 800 vessels. The navy had as much as 68 submarines, submarines that were about to begin a clandestine journey to the strait of Nudantian.

Just outside the city of Yong-Yan, aircraft was being prepared for war. Over 300 strategic bombers were being prepared to carry out one of the deadliest bombings ever in Renatian history.

In San-Eseosi at the headquarters of the Supreme Army of the Democratic Republic of Myeongju, Supreme Commander Pyong, General Bo Hyun-sang and other military officials discussed what srategy would be used to defeat Gotterland and its military.
The command wanted a quick war, a war to test the firepower of the Myeongjan military. It should also become a war to show Renatia the military capabilities of Myeongju. Military logistics and supply could become a problem due to the mountains. The air and sea would play key roles in the invasion. Paratroopers and marines were therefore key elements of the invasion. But the success of the invasion, relied on the destructive force of the air force. Hundreds of strategic bombers were assigned to both military and civilian targets in Gotterland. The Myeongju Air Force was large and modern - and was assigned to dominate the Gotterish airspace as soon as the invasion started.

After the initial invasion, the deathsquads from Pyong Jung-seok would sweep through the conquered areas to carry out mass executions and terror tactics to crush any resistance, opposition or dissent.

Thousands of troops were doing rehearsals and practices - a special institute had been created that trained political officers that would be able to recute informers among the Gotterish population: informers to report dissent.

In a couple of weeks, a full scale invasion would be launched.

천릿길은 한 걸음부터

''A 1000-li journey starts with one step.''

- OPERATION PANTHERA TIGRIS, H-Hour -
Central Agabia,
The Democratic Republic of Myeongju,

0401 Hours

Strait of Nudantian - Gotterland coast
The submarines were closing in on the ports and harbors of Gotterland. Stockbridge was their primary target. The Myeongjan navy was preparing to lay a blockade before all ports of Gotterland - no Gotterish ship was permitted to leave, escape or run.

Finally, it was H-Hour. Great Commander Pyong had ordered that the operation should commence at this hour. Inside the submarines, admirals shouted at their sailors. They shouted to them, that they had to fight with honour for the great Pyong Jung-seok.

Before the Gotterish ports and harbor cities - over 60 submarines launched a series of torpedos. Gotterish ships of all types were targeted by the Myeongjan submarines - No distinction was being made between civil and naval ships. But this was just the opening of the entire operation.

Behind the submarines, lay a line of Myeongjan naval fleets. There were three aircraft carriers - carrying hundreds of aircraft in total. Hundreds of fighter aircraft went up in the sky - with the task to dominate the airspace and ''bomb the hell out of everything''.

Northern Gotterland

As the war began - the All-National Air Force of Myeongju sent its strategic bombers together with fighter aircraft in the Gotterish airspace. After a few hours - hundreds of strategic bombers were hanging above Gotterland - ready to drop their destructive ordnance.

2 Airborne divisions were being prepared for deployment in north Gotterland. In the strait of Nudantian - on board of the Myeongju fleets - 34 000 marines were preparing for rapid deployment as well.

Among these marines and paratroopers were two elite units: Blood & Honor, and the Han Regiment. Blood & Honor (3rd Brigade of the 1st Marine Division) was known for its ruthlessness and brutality. These elite marines were specialized in hand to hand combat, short duration strikes, special recon, sabotage and various other special operations.

In Northern Gotterland - the paratroopers were the first ones to land. They were with 20 000 men strong - soon supported by large tank detachments. They also had support from Multiple Rocket Launch Systems, and of course the All-National Air Force. This joint military force had to encircle and seize the city of Galve.

In the Strait of Nudantian - it took longer before the Marines could get to land. That was because the navy took all time to destroy the entire coastline.

San-Eseosi

Supreme Commander Pyong sat on a couch in his teal-blue Party uniform - as he looked to the news channel of Myeongju. On the news, were two hysterical hosts announcing to the nation that they had entered a great war with the enemies in the south - Gotterland. The news hosts hailed Pyong as the greatest military leader to have ever lived, and they thanked him for leading Myeongju so well after the death of the Eternal Leader - Han Ji-sung.

Pyong smiled. In the other room, he could hear his general Bo Hyun-sang screaming orders with the secured phone. Pyong did not feel a single bit of remorse for the fact that he attacked a defenseless and innocent nation with his large and modern military. Pyong wanted to achieve great things with Myeongju - and this was the perfect way to test his military - which had never been really put to the test. This was all part of Pyong's ambition.

''A 1000-li journey starts with one step.'' he said to himself. Then he took a sip from his tea. He expected Gotterland to surrender within a week.

Alarms all over Gotterland sounded, and news poured in about attacks on the coast. The Volksluft was launched, as soon as word came that planes were coming over the boarder from Myeongju. LA-13s flew off the runways and immediately engaged the bombers.

(Picture: Military patrols in the city of Galve, North Gotterland)

The invasion was underway for more than a week now. Gotterland naval forces were outnumbered heavily, but they still managed to sink a relatively large number of Myeongjan vessels. The Myeongjan naval forces responded with a naval offensive at sea - to hunt down and eliminate all Gotterish naval forces.

The Gotterish coasts were completely blocked by the Myeongjan navy, which carried out bombardments 24 hours a day. In North Gotterland, Myeongjan paratroopers were soon followed by armoured divisions and light infantry units. Hundreds of strategical bombers and fighter aircraft were up in the sky continuously to bomb all Gotterish settlements they could find.

In the south, in the coastal regions, 34 000 marines were deployed by the Myeongjan navy. They have launched an offensive to occupy all rural areas in the south. In Myeongju, reinforcements are being prepared for deployment as well.

As the Myeongjan forces advanced through the north in a large military offensive with destructive methods, several Jeongchi Gundan detachments began to carry out their orders, which came from the highest possible command: Pyong Jung-seok.

Order No. 6637
Order No. 6637 was an order issued directly by Supreme Commander Pyong by decree. The order meant that all Political Corps deployed in Gotterland had to execute at least 25% of the local population in their areas of operation.

The aim of the systematic executions was to bring the population in a permanent state of fear. But fear alone was not enough. Fear could have two possible outcomes: Subjection - Rebellion/resistance.

The other factor that would permanently paralyze and subject a population and make it obedient - was distrust. Distrust among the people themselves. This could be effectively reached by introducing the concept of ''guilt by association'' and ''rewarding'' informers and others who report civilians to the Myeongjan authorities. But to make these concepts work - there had to be an enemy among the people. The ''objective enemy''.

The State Directorate of Internal Security, the secret police of Myeongju, declared the following groups as ''enemies'':

Gotterish intellectuals
The Gotterish political elite
Gotterish Government administrators
All non-ethnic Gotterlanders
All Trade unionists, communists, socialists, democrats, liberals and other followers of dissident ideologies

In the occupied regions of the country, the secret police began to search for these objective enemies. The secret police arrested people randomly, torturing them to make them give names of people that were seen as objective enemies. Those who could be associated with the ''enemies'' - were equally guilty, and executed.

The aim of such policy, is to create an enormous sense of distrust and suspicion among the population - making the people fully docile and pliable.

Pyong has plans to turn the Gotterish into a slave people for Myeongju.

Karrendorf, Unoccupied Territory

"General, with the loss of the council you are now in command of the military, and possibly the country" said a Oberst. Gen Fredrick von Karrendorf looked at the map of Gotterland "WHY!!" he screamed, pounding his fists on the table "Why did they attack us, we have done nothing to provoke it!!" the Oberst looked down at his feet, then back up at the General "Sir if I may?" asked the Oberst, the General nodded "If we equip the locals with firearms from our dead, we just might have a chance" the General nodded again "I agree, have the men gather as many weapons and ammo as they can. I don't what kind of weapons, they could be muskets, or swords, just arm the public" he put his cap on "I want all men and women from the age of 13 to 62 that can stand and walk to gather at the square"

Karrendorf Square

About 4,000 people were gathered everywhere, and it was risky due to the bombers, but it had to be done.

There were large shipping trucks parked near the stage where the General stood "By order of the government, every man woman and child between the ages of 13 and 62 that is an able body citizen, must take up arms against the invading horde!" the General yelled over a loudspeaker "You will come up a take a weapon and one box of ammo! If you do not get a weapon, you will be handed a box of ammo, and you will follow a man or woman with a rifle. If the man or woman with the rifle dies, you will pick up the rifle!" he paused "There will be no retreat! If you are seen retreating others will shoot you. If you see somebody retreating it is your duty to dispatch that person!" the message kept looping

Men, woman and child walked up to the trucks, and were handed rifles and ammo. Some were not so lucky and were given pole arms, muskets and swords that were found in the museums.

"You are all conscripted into the Nationalegarde, with the rank of Rekrut. You will now fight the invading yellow horde!!" screamed an officer. The crowd cheered loudly.

Things like this were happening in every free city, town, and village in Gotterland. Overall the Nationalegarde gained over 85,000 men, women and child.

The Government released propaganda posters and videos today, in hope that it will raise the morale among the Nationalegarde troops. Over the past few week over 300,000+ people have joined the Nationalegarde in an effort to reclaim their land.

Gotterland Propaganda Poster

Gotterland News (GN) -- Reports of resistance fighters in the occupied cities of Gotterland have poured into the Community House (Temp Government building) in Karrendorf, and free citizens cheer for their brave fighting brothers and sisters.

Karrendorf (GN) -- Today The Commanders had ordered any able body citizen, that can use a weapon, to report to their local recruitment office, military checkpoint, or government bunker. Anyone that is an able body citizen caught trying to flee will be imprisoned.

10 miles outside Wiek

About 40,000 Nationalegarde troops young and old, gathered in the farmlands and forests surrounding the city of Wiek. The Gotterland Commanders had ordered a "charge" on the city. Troops were going to be supported by artillery, mortars, and what tanks the Volksarmee could spare. The Volksarmee was ordered to head south, to attempt to take back Nornhall, in an attempt to let civilians who couldn't fight flee the country.

What happened in the past weeks...

Posted Image

After the failure of peace negotiations between Myeongju and Gotterland, the military deployments continued. The military presence of Myeongju in Gotterland now totals 286 000 combat troops, thousands of artillery guns, tanks and armoured vehicles. The skies were dominated by Myeongjan aircraft: the Air Force bases are relatively close to the Gotterish air space and the naval air forces are also very active in the southern regions.

All military units had their own Political Corps as attachment. The Political Corps was a paramilitary wing of the Jajonsim Party, with the special task to eliminate political dissent. Dissent both among the military itself, but also among the civil population of Gotterland. The Political Corps had been given the orders to use terror methods to suppress any opposition against the Myeongjan domination. Every day, mass executions took place. Civilians were recruited as informants to spy upon their neighbours and friends. There were also officers from the State Directorate of Internal Security, to coordinate the pervasive use of terror to isolate, intimidate, and regiment all whom the regime deems menacing. Several terror methods were used; the ''Objective enemy'' method, the ''possible crime'' method and ''guilt by association''. These terror methods had proven to be a golden formula in the past to paralyze an entire population and bring them in a persistent state of fear and distrust.

This terror also resulted in many mass graves. But Pyong had no remoarse; the Gotterish had chosen for it to be this way. Especially when the Gotterish decided to arm their untrained civilians with weapons to fight the Myeongjans. Pyong personally gave orders to level each urban settlement that they could find with bombardments. All civilians were no longer seen as civilians, but as soldiers. Pyong ordered for the extermination of all Gotterish civilians capable of carrying a weapon. The Political Corps was responsible for the extermination campaign. Death squads were formed, which went from village to village to round up the civilians and execute them in a backyard, forest or field. After such mass executions, the ground was covered by a thick layer of human blood and fluids. Children younger than 16 were spared and deported to the north.

The Han Offensive

Posted Image
(Picture: Elite operatives from the Blood & Honor Brigade)

The Han Offensive was launched a few weeks ago, and consisted of a joint force of special operations forces, marines, paratroopers, artillery, tank divisions and air support. The aim was to fully occupy Gotterish territory. Myeongjan military forces are advancing quickly to the south. The Gotterish capital and coastline have been under constant bombardments for months now.

The Han Offensive was slowed down when civil militias fought for every stone in the cities and villages - but in the end, they remained untrained combatands. They were a victim of this war, a victim of their own government. The Gotterish government had sent its own civilians into their deaths by ordering them to attack well-equipped and highly trained military formations. If a Myeongjan ground unit was troubled, they would just call in air support. Tanks provided good support as well. But the Myeongjan forces also made use of multiple rocket launch systems: rocket systems that were very accurate at a maximum distance of 75 kilometers.

In the occupied areas of Gotterland, the Myeongjan Political Corps began to spread propaganda. The civilians were told that their government was sending them to their death, by telling civilians to fight the Myeongjan professionals. The Political Corps promised that civilians who surrendered to Myeongju would be spared, and would receive medical, food and water supplies from the Myeongjan military.

The Han Offensive also consisted of systematic aerial bombardments on Gotterish urban settlements - to undermine the motivation of the Gotterish to continue resistance. The Myeongjan air force and navy wanted to send a message: resistance is pointless. Surrender.

As this escalating conflict carried on and the troops advanced to the south, Pyong began to realize that this war was too much. The war effort, the scale of destruction, the number of deaths among civilians - this invasion was meant to be a swift blitzkrieg. Instead, it was becoming a pointless massacre.

Pyong decided to be merciful once again, and to give the Gotterish another chance to surrender and to put an end to all the bloodshed. He ordered his marshal, Bo Hyun-sang, to contact the Gotterish military command.

Myeongjan telegram

Adressed to the Gotterish military chief of staff,

Supreme Leader Pyong wishes to end this madness. He is merciful, and willing to give you another chance at peace. Therefore, we are suing you for peace.

You are invited to discuss the peace negotiations in Yong-Yan, Myeongju. Your delegation will be under the protection of diplomatic immunity.

This time, we dictate the terms of agreement - and not Gotterland. That is why the previous negotiations failed.

Signed,

Wonsu (marshal) Bo Hyun-sang
