![]() Government Announces Creation of TBC Prime Minister Rana Fromberg announced today the creation of a new government-supported news broadcaster, the Tawasian Broadcasting Corporation. The TBC's goals are to provide quality programming that is distinctively Tawasian, reflect Tawasia's multicultural and multiethnic society, and report international news from a Tawasian perspective. Although not stated by the government, the TBC's creation was widely seen as a response to the rise of mostly foreign news outlets providing international news in Tawasia. The TBC will be launching several television channels, including one twenty-four hour news channel. It will also broadcast over several radio stations and have an online presence. It will be supported by a mix of government funding and advertisement revenue. |

![]() TBC Website Attacked The TBC's website was forced offline for eight hours today, one of many targets of a distributed denial-of-service attack across Renatia. This is widely believed to be a response to the publication of an article by the mysterious Nentsian dissident "Krolikin." Krolikin's accusation is that Nentsian democracy is nothing but a sham, and describes a darker picture of Nentsian society than what is often portrayed to the world. Whether the attack that brought down news services worldwide was initiated by independent hackers, the Federovist Party, or possibly even the Nentsian government remains to be determined. Prime Minister Fromberg has refused to comment on the situation except to issue a condemnation of the attack itself. In the interests of freedom of the press, the text of Krolikin's article is being republished here:

![]() Islamic Empire Caliph Assassinated Salah ad-Din Yusuf ibn Ayyub, the Caliph of the Islamic Empire, was gunned down in front of his palace while delivering his annual speech. Anonymous sources have indicated that he was shot by a sniper from one of the buildings surrounding the Caliph’s Palace in Medina. Imperial Guards reportedly took the Caliph’s body away to a classified location immediately before they were stormed by an angry crowd. No person or group has yet claimed responsibility for the Caliph’s assassination, but most suspicions rest on members of the so-called “People’s Rebellion,” the name of a series of uprisings across the Islamic Empire. In a transcript of the Caliph’s speech, the Caliph had announced that the Islamic Empire was planning on increasing the Empire’s already pronounced police-state characteristics, flooding its cities with military personnel and increasing the search for supposed infidels, blasphemers, and anyone else threatening those in power. He was directly addressing those participating in the People’s Rebellion, which had been previously put down by military force. Prime Minister Fromberg’s office did not respond when questioned about the situation in the Islamic Empire. Tawasia has had several business dealings with the Islamic Empire in the past, and it is believed that she does not wish to damage relations no matter what ends up happening in the Empire or who ends up in power. The Islamic Empire’s government has also been silent, imposing a blackout on the press within the Empire. The only new information that the TBC has managed to get out of Medina since the assassination show that the city is in chaos, with rioters running wild and no one quite sure who is in charge. |

![]() War Breaks Out Earlier today, the Jogen Confederacy declared war on the Lordship of Terrosiana. This was a response to the earlier hijacking of a Jogen Navy transport ship in the Firey Strait by pirates, and to Terrosiana not responding to Jogen’s demands for monetary compensation. According to the Jogen Navy, these pirates had the backing of Terrosiana, constituting a blatant act of war. Jogen’s President Belya has already ordered an attack on Terrosianan territory. After the declaration of war, Prime Minister Fromberg’s office issued a statement of support for Jogen and President Belya, although an official offer of military support for Jogen is not expected. The effect of the war on Jogen’s Tawasian deployments is unknown at this time. |

![]() BETSSTARDA NUKED A nuclear weapon was detonated in Jogen’s capital city today. The yield and extent of damage are currently unknown, but early projections estimate a death toll in the hundreds of thousands. Early imagery from the scene shows a large mushroom cloud engulfing the city, completely shrouding it from view. No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack. Though much suspicion rests on Terrosiana, it is not a known nuclear power. (OOC: Is the thing about Terrosiana true? )

![]() Stock Markets in Chaos The Tawasian Stock Exchange opened in turmoil today following the news of a nuclear attack on Betsstarda, Jogen. By the time trading ended at the end of the day, the TSE had recorded the single largest one-day drop in over a decade. Dozens of companies that do business with Jogen saw their stock value plunge, almost free-falling before Prime Minister Fromberg ordered trading closed early for the day. The Tala also saw a decrease in value compared to other currencies. Most major Tawasian corporations have extensive business ties with the Jogen Confederacy, and many had regional headquarters in Betsstarda. Economic links between Tawasia and Jogen have been severely ruptured, and it will take a long time before they are fully repaired. Other stock exchanges worldwide have also suffered losses, dragged down by the attack on Jogen. |

![]() PBG Collapses As the repercussions of the nuclear attack on Betsstarda continue to reveal themselves, Pengar Banking Group declared bankruptcy yesterday evening. Tawasia’s second largest bank, Pengar suffered massive losses due to its large investments in Jogen, which were concentrated in Betsstarda. This was compounded by a run on the bank over the past two days, leading to a collapse in its finances. As Tawasia’s second largest bank, PBG’s collapse is sure to drastically change Tawasia’s financial industry, which makes up a large percentage of the total economy. United Bank of Tawasia, the country’s largest bank, has already announced that its finances are secure and it is not in the same danger that PBG was. While many other banks also had a presence in Jogen, none had invested as heavily in the country as Pengar, and so suffered comparatively light losses. The government has announced that it will take control of Pengar to protect its remaining assets. |

![]() Jogen Becoming Communist? President Davos Parker of Jogen announced today that that he has nationalized all large businesses operating in Betsstarda, including international companies. Several Tawasian multinational companies have been affected. Condemnation from industry leaders has been almost universal. President Parker’s stated plan is to merge and combine these businesses into larger, government-controlled entities in the name of stabilizing the economy. While this has noticeable parallels to Prime Minister Fromberg’s government takeover of the Pengar Banking Group; the Jogen’s government has taken control of the entire economy of Betsstarda, a significant violation of free market principles that most economists say will have dire consequences for Jogen’s economy. President Parker has also announced martial law and a requirement for all unemployed persons in Jogen to take government-paid jobs. Numerous protests and riots have started in major Jogen cities, and both police and army units have been called in to put them down. In addition, the Jogen Oil Consortium has stopped exporting oil to Tawasia. Not satisfied with merely nationalizing of all Betsstarda business, the Jogen government has directed many Jogen companies to reserve much of their production for Jogen use only, including ninety percent of the JOC’s oil. Prime Minister Fromberg has not officially responded to any of these developments except to announce an immediate government rationing of oil. Tawasia has built up a reserve stockpile of oil equal to approximately six months of use at current levels, which will be used while Tawasia searches for other trading partners to buy oil from. For now, international shipping and trade with most countries is continuing normally, but this cannot last indefinitely without a reliable source of oil. While Tawasia has enjoyed a special relationship with Jogen for many years, in one stroke President Parker has demonstrated what he thinks about Tawasia’s support, which will undoubtedly have repercussions in future relations. |

![]() Economy in Turmoil The stock market took another plunge today following the news coming out of Jogen. Many Tawasian business leaders have recently criticized the large amount of influence that Jogen has on Tawasia’s economy. In related news, the United Bank of Tawasia has announced that it is moving its Vaarynite regional headquarters from Betsstarda, Jogen to Port Guasto, Lefkana. UBT already had a large presence in Port Guasto, allowing it to move operations as quickly as it did. It is expected that many Tawasian companies will follow UBT’s lead in transferring their remaining operations out of Jogen, though most will take more time to do so. |

![]() Upcoming Power Shift In a surprise move, Prime Minister Rana Fromberg released a statement announcing that she will not be standing for reelection in the upcoming parliamentary election. No reasons were given. She is also resigning from her position as chairman of the People’s Party of Tawasia, leaving time for the PPT to select a new leader in time for the election. Several people are expected to contest the PPT’s chairmanship, including Deputy Prime Minister Oliver Worthington, Minister of Defence Takumi Ishikawa, and MP Zaida Jones. The selection process is scheduled to take place next week, among the PPT members of parliament. Prime Minister Fromberg leaves office after nearly fifteen years in power. She leaves a powerful legacy – spearheading the formation of the Community of Nations, raising Tawasia’s diplomatic profile and influence throughout Renatia, and developing extensive relations with some of Renatia’s most powerful nations. As Tawasia’s most popular prime minister in several decades, whoever replaces her will have large shoes to fill. Edited by Cowland5, 6 Feb 2011, 07:30 PM.
