Background threads: The Velvet Guerilla (22-24 AE) Vertadoria-Verzonia conflict (24 -25 AE) Tropic Straight Conflict (40 - 42 AE) The Santana Coup (42 AE) Tzetxuhoani Revolution (48 AE) P R O L O G U E ![]() The Tropic Straight - Tzetxuhoani coast ''For months we have been preparing. For a long time we have wanted to write a history of our revolution... But the tasks are many, the years go by, and the memory of the insurrection dissolving in the past. These events have not yet been properly described, events which already belong to the history of the Vertadorias.'' Ernesto Carrasco, Estéban Carrasco, Enrique Carrasco, Juan Villa de Santiago, Alejandro Córdoba, Claudio Delgado, Maximiliano Del Bosque, Tabaré Nahuelos and Naira Nahuelos stepped on board of a boat early in the morning. It could rather be called night, than morning. These seven revolutionary men, and one woman, were the same ones to lead the 1st Vertadorian Revolution in 24 AE. Their revolution was countered during the Santanacoup of 42AE. For years they lived in exile, fighting alongside Ichihuexopan rebels in Tzetxuhoan. The revolutionaries in Tzetxuhoan had taken power, and it was time for the Vertadorians to return to their homeland. When they began their revolutionary careers, they were all young people. Now they were all in their mid-fourties or even older. They knew this was perhaps their last chance to overthrow the dictatorial regime of Rodrigo de Santana and his drug cartels. It all began with collecting the weapons and ammunition needed for a new insurrection. Ernesto Carrasco and Alejandro collected weapons from the Tzetxuhoani revolutionary groups that didn't need them anymore. The weapons were hidden in the rainforests and swamps of Tzetxuhoan. Juan and Enrique began recruting young fighters from all over Tzetxuhoan to join the Vertadorian insurrection. After weeks, they had gathered 74 men. The recrutes were given months of training and preparation. Juan, responsible for their training, has 25 years of experience with fighting insurrectionary guerilla wars. We left Tzetxuhoan that night, by boat. We had to cross the Tropic Straight to get to Vertadoria. A dangerous trip. Pirates were swarming around in the Tropic, just like Kinsman naval vessels. If they found us, they would immediately recognize us as an insurrectionist group. We would be captured, our weapons confiscated. I would be recognized as Ernesto Carrasco - the most famous revolutionary leader in Renatia. That would be the end. So we needed luck. Whether you believe it or not, we had luck. The Tropic Straight is a very big straight, thousands of kilometers wide. And we managed to penetrate the dangers with our boat, loaded with 82 men who were seasick. The boat was full of puke. Soon we will arrive in Vertadoria. My name has not been forgotten there. As soon as the people know about my presence, Rodrigo Santana has already lost this war. And he knows that. The Return of El Carrasco ![]() ![]() Puerto Guáltera - early in the morning It was early in the morning when the boat with 82 revolutionaries landed on the south-Vertadorian coast. As the 82 men landed, sick, weak and hungry, they began to unload their ammunition and weapons as quick as possible. Comandante Enrique Carrasco ordered the men to split up in units of seven. The objective was to get in Puerto Guáltera, a small port on the southcoast of Vertadoria. They had to get there in two days. At day, the men marched and marched, at night they slept. Sometimes they set up their own camps, sometimes their was a local peasant who welcomed them in his house. The guerilla units had no food, no water, little motivation and no energy. Finding a local who they could trust was a gift of god, every time they did. The guerilla had strict rules about the stealing of food from locals. Anyone who stole from the locals would be severely punished. Anyone who harmed the locals would be executed according to the revolutionary laws of the command. As the days went by, the boat of the guerillas had been found by the authorities. As they investigated the boat and what was left (some ammo, medicine kits, dirty clothes and fake identities), the authorities began to ask locals if they had seen suspicious people in the region. Some locals knew nothing, some lied about it, and others admitted to the authorities that they had seen guerilla troops moving through the region. A silent alarm was raised. Rodrigo de Santana was informed. Santana became furious in his office. Now he had to suppress the guerillas, without letting the population find out about the return of Ernesto Carrasco. If they would get to know about his return, the masses might rise up against Santana and declare support for Ernesto Carrasco. Santana quickly ordered his officers to sent military forces over to the south of Vertadoria. Santana also contacted the most influential landowners and cartel leaders of the south, to alarm them. Santana needed them to set up local vigilante militias in order to counter a possible leftist insurrection, led by Ernesto Carrasco. After that, Santana retreated himself to his villa outside Santa María. The villa was secured by 60 heavily armed Escoltas, and could serve as a command centre for Santana. Santana went to his villa to enjoy the luxury, but also to secure his own future. IF the population would declare support to Ernesto Carrasco, Santana would not be in the presidential building. He would be in this villa, from where he could escape easily and unnoticed. Fromout this villa, Santana could also make some last-minute arrangements to protect his criminal empire. By noon, the first units of the guerillas had arrived in Puerto Guáltera. But now, Ernesto Carrasco's unit had also arrived in the city. The rumors spread quickly in the small city, and thousands of people came to see if it was true: El Comandante had returned. And it was true. The man of the Vertadorian revolution, the man of the Vertadorian people had returned from his exile in Tzetxuhoan. Ernesto Carrasco, his brothers and comrades had made it alive to Vertadoria. The men were exhausted, but the citizens of Guáltera did not even notice that. They were far too excited, too happy. They applauded and shouted; ViVa Vertadoría Libre! ViVa Vertadoría Libre! ViVa Vertadoría Libre! The authorities in the city did nothing. The police forces refused to open fire at the giant mob, the government officials left their offices through the back door. They fled to the north. There, they spread the news that Ernesto Carrasco's guerillas had taken Puerto Guáltera - without firing a single shot. From that point on, underground media quickly informed the entire population about the return of El Carrasco. This noon, Comandante Ernesto Carrasco, his seven revolutionary friends and 74 other guerilla fighters have returned to Vertadoria. They have taken Puerto Guáltera, a port in the south, without firing a single shot. Spontaneous mass demonstrations have erupted in several cities in the south, government officials are fleeing to the north. In some cities, violent incidents have been reported. Is this the beginning of the end of 8 years of Santana Terror? Radio Insurgente calls upon all true Vertadorians to disobey Santana and the Santanistas, and join the bloodless revolution of Ernesto Carrasco! ViVa Vertadoría Libre! - Radio Insurgente, underground radio reporting from Los Juanos. In Puerto Guáltera, the guerillas were honored by thousands of people, who were celebrating their freedom. Without actually doing anything, the guerillas had scared away the oppressive local governments of Santana. This was unlike anything the guerillas had expected. They had expected they had to fight a war. But all they had to do now was shaking hands, waving and smiling. Ernesto Carrasco gave a speech to the people of Guáltera. Giving speeches was one of his best qualities. It was the key to his success during the Vertadorian revolution. Ernesto's words could truly motivate the troops, gain confidence of locals and win the support of key organizations and groups. ''Vertadoría: We have arrived. We have arrived here in Puerto Guáltera. We are here! For eight years, terror has ruled Vertadoria. For eight years, organized crime was used to finance that terror. For eight years, campesinos and trabajadores have been brutally oppressed by death squads, violent landowners and police troops. For eight years, the criminals and powerful were able to steal from us, to exploit us, to persecute us, to humiliate us. If we refused to accept our misery, to powerful would make us disappear. But now we stand here, and we can finally rise up from our knees. And now that we stand upright, we appear to be even taller than those who subjected us. Now we will hit back. And we will hit harder than those in power could even imagine. Now that we stand upright, we will be able to have justice and liberty for all who were living on their knees. The officials of the government, the collaborators of the crimes, are fleeing; trying to hide from the truth. The truth that makes them criminal, and that sets us free as a people of Vertadoria. Today that truth is here in Puerto Guáltera, tomorrow that truth will also be in Santa María and all over Vertadoria. Viva Vertadoría Libre!'' - Ernesto Carrasco. More to the north of Vertadoria, government military forces were preparing military strongholds to prevent Ernesto Carrasco from traveling to the capital. The guerillas remained that day and night in Puerto Guáltera, preparing for their dangerous trips to the north. All over Vertadoria, government forces tried to suppress the spontaneous celebrations in the cities that erupted to celebrate the return of El Carrasco. Santana had become a stressed man. Inside his villa he was constantly shouting new orders to his military officers, he ordered his paramilitary troops to repress every form of support to Carrasco's return - and at the same time Santana was preparing his escape plan. Day 2 In the morning, the guerillas left Guáltera in military jeeps and trucks that police forces had left behind. An hour later the guerillas arrived in a small town. In that village, the guerillas were welcomed as heroes and local government officials had fled the village hours before. Incidents were reported that peasants had ousted powerful landowners, the landowners tried to defend themselves with small paramilitary groups. Ernesto Carrasco and the guerillas moved from town to town, and every time they were welcomed as heroes or liberators. After 8 years under Santana, the Vertadorian population really longed for freedom. In the larger cities, including the capital Santa María, mass demonstrations erupted. Millions of people in Vertadoria were already claiming their freedom. The government troops were ordered to suppress the demonstrations with violence if needed, but most government troops decided not to carry out those orders. They refused to waste the lives of so many innocent people. In Santa María, the government troops remained loyal to Santana and opened fire at the demonstrating masses. Hundreds of people were killed, shot in their back as they tried to escape the bullets of the Escoltas and military police. But overall, Santana was losing support quickly. Government officials turned their backs to him, hoping that their collaboration with Santana would then be forgotten, military units decided not to fire at political enemies as they refused to spill more blood and even crime lords and drug cartels quickly broke off contact with Santana in order to save their criminal networks and money, before it was too late. By the end of day 2, Santana only had the support of some military regiments stationed in the capital and the troops that were protecting his villa, just outside the capital. Ernesto's guerilla forces had some skirmishings with government troops on their way to the north, but local military commanders signed peace with Ernesto Carrasco. That was because the government troops were actually being slaughtered by the guerillas, and the soldiers themselves refused to continue the fight. That night, not only the underground media reported on the revival of the guerilla, but also all the other media began to ignore government restrictions. The media no longer obeyed the orders of the government, and many media stations that night declared themselves independent and free. Santana could do nothing. His remaining troops were occupied with maintaining order, and were not available to punish media stations and journalists. Rodrigo Santana realized that night, that his days as ''Interim-president'' of Vertadoria were numbered. He had too little support to hold on to his power if the masses or guerillas tried to take it. And most of the supporters that Santana had left also realized that Santana's position had become too weak. It was a matter of hours before Santana and his regime would collapse under the immense pressure of Ernesto Carrasco. Very late in the night, violent civilian groups began to harass government officials, government buildings all over the country were set on fire. The media kept reporting about everything through the entire night, they were that happy to be free again. The media expected that Ernesto Carrasco and the guerillas would arrive in Santa María the next day before noon. Nobody knew what would happen then. Would the remaining troops that were loyal to Santana fight until the last minute? Would they surrender? Nobody knew. The guerillas were preparing themselves for a violent confrontation with Santanista troops in the capital. Until now, they had only fought minor skirmishings. And Ernesto and the other commanders knew the guerillas were well-trained for violent confrontations with Santana's troops. They had prevented three assassination attempts on Ernesto Carrasco - attempts made by members of the drug cartels that could lose everything if Santana was removed from power. Day 3: the Battle of Santa María By the end of the morning, a caravan of journalists, peasants, mothers, soldiers, political activists, guerillas and Ernesto Carrasco entered the city of Santa María. Just like in all other cities, they were welcomed as liberators. Banners were waving across the capital to celebrate the freedom and the return of Ernesto Carrasco. But a the people went deeper into the city, towards the centre where the government was seated, the roads were barricaded by military vehicles. Tanks drove through the barricaded districts, Santanista troops had entrenched themselves to prevend the guerillas from taking power. The troops of Santana were only defending buildings - stone. The power they claimed to be defending was something they had lost hours ago. They must have realized this. Heavy gunfights took place between the guerillas and a few thousand troops loyal to Santana. The guerillas only had a few hundred fighters, but they had better commanders, more skill and better motivation. They had the support of some fragments of regiments from the Vertadorian military, who decided to join the anti-Santana movement. They even had the support of smaller street gangs who fought to protect their communities in the years under Santana's rule. The battle carried on all day long, the media were reporting about it as if it was a football cup final. Santana was, ironically enough, listening to the reports of the media on the battle to hear how things were going for him. Free press wasn't that useless after all, thought Santana. What Santana didn't know, was that Alejandro Cordoba (a close friend and comrade of Ernesto Carrasco), was on his way to Santana's villa. He was on his way to Santana with a military unit that had declared its support to the popular movement to oust Santana. They had instructions to arrest Santana before he fled to Terrosiana. When Alejandro Cordoba and the soldiers arrived at the villa, a siege began. Santana's guards tried to defend the villa. After a siege of two hours, Santana's troops decided to surrender. They were all arrested, Santana was arrested and ousted as ''interim-president'' and all his belongings in the villa were confiscated for crime investigations. Santana was accused by Alejandro Cordoba of politicide, crimes against humanity, illegal drugs trafficking, illegal weapons trafficking, abuse of power, corruption, high treason, illegal human trafficking, leading a criminal organization, fraud, extortion, contract killing, kidnapping, undermining of the Vertadorian constitution and grand theft of state property. In Santa María, the news quickly spread that Santana was captured alive. Ernesto Carrasco then spoke with one of the commanders of the troops that were still resisting. After a short talk, all troops of Santana surrendered and layed down their weapons. Ernesto Carrasco and his troops quickly occupied the Parliament building and presidential building in Santa María, Santana's troops were arrested. Inside the parliament building, Ernesto Carrasco officially announced free elections to be held in Vertadoria. He spoke to the country on national television. ''We did it. Again we have liberated ourselves. The Vertadorian Revolution has been killed by Rodrigo de Santana and Kinsman imperialism, but today we are all part of a second movement, the movement of the 2nd Vertadorian Revolution; the Nittia Revolution of 50 AE. Starting today, we can begin building a society again, where all of the oppressed will have liberty and justice. A society where humanity comes first, a society without exploitation, free of imperialism and racism. Elections shall be held, so that the people of our country will have the opportunity to choose a destination for our revolution, the path that Vertadoria shall walk.'' - Ernesto Carrasco. Day 4: the PURSV revived ![]() Just one day after the ousting of Santana, the election campaigns were officially launched. The guerillas had revived the PURSV, the political front that was created after the 1st Vertadorian Revolution. Between 25AE and 42AE, the PURSV ruled Vertadoria with Bernardo Escarra as president. Escarra was assassinated, a few years before the Santanacoup. He was succeeded by Ernesto Carrasco, to act as interim president. When Carrasco went to the front in the war with the CFK, Santana seized power. The PURSV was banned, and its members persecuted. Today, 8 years later, the Partido Unido del Revolución Socialista de Vertadoría had been revived. Its presidential candidate was, not surprising, Ernesto Vítor Carrasco de Calleja.
