New constitution adopted, long overdue election now underway
Acting President signs in new constitution and is now running for reelection

Posted Image

After nearly a decade of postponements and amendments, the Republic of Celtus under its new constitution signed into law by Acting President Tanner Wilkes will hold its first elections. With the absence all bans on certain political and religious beliefs in the new constitution, four major parties and a number of minor parties are running alongside the current ruling party, the National Democrats. One party, the Christian People's Union, has been permitted to register in the election regardless of its open support for the Commonwealth and monarchism in Celtus.

Entry polls have indicated that the National Democrats will win the election by a slim majority, returning the title of President to the now Acting holder of the position. Watchdog groups and independent media agencies have repeatedly accused Tanner Wilkes of election fraud, corruption, and dictatorial tendencies after he abolished the nation's constitution in multiple cases and postponed open and free elections. Many agree that the outcome is worth the wait as the clocks count down on the nation's first democratic election as the Republic of Celtus.

Under the new constitution, the nation will now be governed under a strong presidential system with a bicameral legislative branch, one representing counties and the other a proportional representation of votes. The National Senate, the upper house, will consist of 220 Senators from counties all across the country; the Representative's Assembly, the lower house, will consist of 380 Representatives elected via proportional selection. The party which holds the majority of all seats in the Senate and the highest percentage of votes in the Assembly is able to choose the next President. Voting age has been lowered to 18 and elections are to be held every seven years, or if a vote of confidence fails both levels of parliament.
