Palacio do Fernando, Ciudad de Santa María, La Républica de Vertadoría

The sun was shining in the narrow and old streets of the picturesque capital of Vertadoria, Santa María. Built in colonial neoclassical style, Santa María had always been the center of power in Vertadoria. The Junta Militar resided in this city during its reign, the socialist revolutionary government resided here as well, and now the ''Board of National Crisis Management'' resided in the capital. The Board, or simply Junta, seized power during the Santana Coup, six years ago now.

Rodrigo de Santana was a conservative landowner, with influential friends before he seized power. The revolutionary governments under Bernardo Escarra (assassinated), and later Comandante Ernesto Carrasco, threatened the wealth of Santana. During the Tropic Strait war, in which Vertadoria was attacked by nations with far-right ideologies, Santana used his charismatic features to gain support among those who had lost there faith in the government.

Santana eventually occupied the presidential residence, as the government was literally fighting in the front lines to defend the country. Ernesto Carrasco and his comrades fled to Tzetxuhoan, Santana suspended the parliament and had 82 000 members of the PURSV (Partido Unido del Revolucion Socialista de Vertadoría) arrested. In a few months time, 19 000 political opponents, journalists, court judges, politicians, trade unionists and others simply 'disappeared'. Santana's death squads, ESCOLTAS, paraded proudly over the national plaza's and squares, saluting the Vertadorian flag. They were the ones who raided the homes of innocent, who fought with protestors and demonstrators, who tortured wives to betray their husbands, who raped teenage daughters to make fathers confess, who shot dead children to prevent them from becoming subversive like their fathers.

And Santana?...Santana always kept smiling. Santana always smiled and waved at the Vertadorian people, in his fine uniform with his 'Partido Creyente' which 'believed in the great future of Vertadoria through unity and commitment'. A part of the population saw Santana as the destroyer of the Vertadorian Revolution, bringing back cruelty like 30 years ago. Other Vertadorians argued that Santana saved the country by signing peace with both attackers in the Tropic Strait War.

Another problem was that the Vertadorian economy was rubbish 30 years ago, and it was not any better now. Santana slowly tried to introduce market capitalism. Before Santana, the revolutionary Socialists applied a semi collectivist economic policy, with only few industries left to the free market.

Officially, 21.6% of the workers were unemployed. In reality, the unemployment was around 30-40%. This problem frustrated the working classes, and more and more often, trade unions would illegally rally with the unemployed to protest against the government's economic policy...or lack of it.

Santana always ordered Vítor Belmonte to arrest everybody who participated in the demonstration, but he too began to realize that in the long term, this could lead to his own downfall.

In the past months, Rodrigo Santana allowed more freedom of speech, he even allowed free elections for the smaller community governments, and the censorship on the media became less strict. Yet the Vertadorians were completely brainwashed: They had always only heard about the good things Santana did, so many did not know what to believe: Santana, good or bad?
The people could not receive foreign news, and state terror created fear among those who didn't support the Santana regime.

But soon, a lot of things would change for Vertadoria. El Caudillo, Don Rodrigo de Santana, had great plans for the country.

La Republica de Vertadoría

The situation was tense again. It could be felt everywhere in the country. The peasants did not work on the land, the streets in the cities were deserted - President Santana was about to make a national announcement.

It was big news, because Santana did not appear in public anymore for months now. It was obvious that Santana had to make something happen. He seized power by promising to improve the economic situation of Vertadoria. Instead, the country was still bankrupt.

Many people wanted the socialists back, the revolution. Because of Santana's cruel regime and his counterrevolutionary/reactionary economic policies, there was a growing civil unrest in Vertadoria. people demanded elections, they wanted a 2nd revolution - and in Vertadoría a call for a revolution can easily make one happen. It is quite normal for Vertadorians to combine politics with weapons.

Rodrigo de Santana feared that his regime could be confronted with revolutionary sentiments among the masses, therefore, Santana took drastic meassures in order to remain in power. He was about to announce that on national television.

Rodrigo de Santana:
Citizens of Vertadoría! I am glad to speak to you once again. We have some serious problems in our republic, that my interim government was unable to tackle so far.
Today I would like to inform you that the government is doing all she can to tackle our national problems. The poverty, the unemployment, the political tension.

I am proud to announce that Vertadoría will enter the international stage again, Vertadoría will open up its markets to foreign capital, we will seek to get close ties with Jogen, Courlund, Aus'tiana and other rich nations. We have lots of precious oil, rare tropical woods, fruit and we will sell military weapons that are of no use to us.

If this all works well, then we should be able to hold democratic elections again within a few years. Until then, it remains strictly forbidden for civilians to express any political opinions, all civilians are to remain a-political for as long as the interim government of national crisis management is operative.

Those who ignore this decree, risk severe punishment.
I wish you all a good day, and a good future.

The people were a bit confused. The peasants really did not care about what Santana just promised, but in the cities, many people were slightly optimistic. Foreign trade would begin again, tourism would go up - they believed an economic revival might be possible after all. Great!

Shortly after the announcement was made, the economy began to grow already. Entrepreneurs who had heard the news began to employ workers again, in order to be ready for the expected trades with the rest of Renatia.

Rodrigo de Santana consulted his cabinet. Ignacio Ayala de Valbuena advised him to bring visits to potential trading partners, such as Jogen, Terrosiana, Germania, the HDA, Nentsia and Aus'tiana. Santana really didn't care about international politics. He wanted to trade with Germania just as much as with Nentsia or Jogen. Dictatorship or democracy, Warka or former UNP - Santana just wanted foreign investments in Vertadoria. It was essential for his own power. With awe, Santana watched the situation evolving in Tzetxuhoan where a dissatisfied people could force the government on its knees. That was not allowed to happen in Vertadoría too.
