Yl'hya University, Independent City of Yl'hya Jalen Ev'nik was a good speaker, a fact which he knew and acknowledged its use as he looked around at the other students who had assembled for this meeting. They were part of a growing movement founded on the sentiment that the city of Yl'hya should be incorporated in the Democratic Republic of Aus'tiana. While he was the leader of a group supporting this in his own city, there were a number of other groups being created in numerous other cities along the northern coast of Neuonia. There were multiple reasons for the consideration of such a thing; first, there was the economic benefits of being part of a large trading network and joining an already strong industrial economy. Second, things like infrastructure, education, healthcare, and so on would not have to be administered by each independent city alone (albeit they coordinated on some projects, it was still difficult dealing with jurisdictional problems). Third, the Aus'tianians were identical in culture and in history as the rest of the cities; it was only in the past ten years that many of the cities became democratically run, which had appeased them enough not to become involved with the revolution in 33Æ. But all reasons aside, it was primarily for protection. There was a growing power in the east of many cities banding together (willingly or not) under the rule of a single warlord, threatening the security of the more westward and democratic cities. All this had been discussed before, and the purpose of this meeting was to consolidate their plan to approach the city council to request inclusion in Aus'tiana as well as to call for a referendum (which they assumed would likely happen if they offered such a thing to them). They talked late into the night over coffee and danishes on the best approach... |
