Near Zeray, Deira Colonel Mitchell stood up on a tank and addressed the crowd of soldiers. "Good morning, soldiers of the People's Liberation Army. Today, we will overwhelm the Deirans with intnese force from all sides. 8,000 troops will attack from the North, another 8,000 from the South, the East and the West. 3,000 will be dropped off helicopters onto rooftops. Bombers have been performing bombing raids on strategic positions; and will have a final surge immediately before the assault. During the assault you will have full access to air and artillery strikes. Know that the Deirans are a steadfast foe, and we have left them no escape route, for they will not retreat. Be prepared to take a life for the Union of Integritist Territories, for that is what we require of you." Colonel Mitchell got in his tank, and the PLA headed for battle. A letter from Chief Hizir to the Dux Dear Dux Harrison Torbjørn, As to your request to increase the Groenlander contribution to the Deiran War, and to secure the desert in North Zeira; a few hundred soldiers both Berber and Groen, have been tasked with capturing the desert area in North Deira. The scarcely populated area has no real frontier protection, and will not be a difficult target. The troops are experts in desert warfare and have been ordered to fortify in the desert until further orders from the Dux. May god be with you; Chief Hizir, Groenland Regional Rector Edited by Duce, 31 May 2010, 04:15 PM.

General Wuffing prepared to take a legion of five hundred men to the northern desert. The Integrists would be mad not to send a few Berbers there. The two remaining legions went to Zeray to be slaughtered by the PLA. from Colonel Leodwalding's reports he was in a very strong defencive position. His plan would have worked against a thousand men, maybe even two thousand, but against the swathes of UIT infantry converging on the city he would surely fail. Wuffing picked up his telephone and called the President. "Mr President, we have no hope of victory against the UIT. Sending our army to fight them was suicide. Deira is no more unless peace can be achieved." "General, it is your job to defeat the Integrist aggressors. If you can't do that then you will die. It is for you to decide who kills you." There was an eerie silence in Zeray apart from the sounds of airborne warfare. Colonel Leodwalding's legions knew that they would die within a month, probably sooner. As they saw the Integrists draw near to the suburbs their deathly silence engulfed the city. A final precaution had been prepared: every able-bodied civilian that wasn't hiding in a cupboard had been armed with anything that was spare. They numbered about 6,000 and their lack of training showed. Deira was ready to die. |

Zeray, Deira The size of the invading army was a logistical nightmare. Many officers spent all their waking hours keeping track of and documenting the movement of regiments and divisions. As the army fought through the suburbs and arrived ever closer to the city, the Deiran resistance grew stronger. The Deirans were phenomenal; the PLA had never faced such a sturdy foe. Colonel Mitchell did not want to attack the city; he knew that there were many Deirans there. Even though he had a massive numerical advantage, every Integritist life was sacred, and he knew that he would lose many fighting the Deirans. He organised for an operation modeled off of the Vertadorian OPERATION: PERSUASION. Bombers dropped leaflets, amongst the live rounds. The leaflets said, "You are a formidable opponent, and do not deserve to die. Join us, do not die fighting us." The PLA encircled the city of Zeray. Colonel Mitchell told them to wait. One reason was to allow the attackers to catch their breath, the other was to give the Deirans a chance to join the PLA, rather than be destroyed by it. |

To The Union of Integritist Territories I request that you leave deria alone, your primary reason for being there no longer exists as yeldish have called for a crease fire and declared deria free. You no longer have reason to be there so I suggest you leave now before this gets out of hand. From Deputy Prime Minster Alex vance HDA Edited by Drake, 2 Jun 2010, 06:59 PM.

The steadily retreating Deiran army was fighting for every square metre it lost. The Integrist leaflets had been burnt by zealous children who had stolen sharp kitchen knives and were joining in the slaughter. The truth, though, was that Zeray was being lost to the UIT. Deira simply could not face the Integrist military. Colonel Leodwalding knew this as he prepared a white flag and his official surrender document. He hoped that somehow he was not losing and that the fall of Zeray was all a dream. He hoped that the Integrist army would simply stop fighting and return to their homeland. For the first time since his childhood he began to pray. The PLA paused. Their onslaught halted and it was obvious that they wished for a surrender. Colonel Leodwalding grasped his white flag of surrender and marched to the frontier. He was allowed through the Integrist line and was shown to the HQ where Colonel Mitchell stood waiting for him. "Colonel Mitchell, I have come to speak to you about the future of Deira." He was calm even though he hardly dared to do what he was doing. "I have come to talk to you about surrender. I will allow you to return to the UIT with a special passport to ensure that you are not attacked. Neither of us want unnecessary death so your surrender would be the best way to overcome this. If you thought I would surrender Deira to you Integrists you are sadly misguided. Any true Deiran would rather rot in an unmarked grave than say that he betrayed his country to gain a few more years of life. I have proposed an agreement. Do you accept?" |

In the Dux's office... A message arrived from the HDA; but the Dux was in Vertadoria and he would not recieve the message for some days. Zeray, Deira Many Integritists had been killed by the frighteningly efficient Deirans. Hundreds lay dead, killed by the Dux's desire to annex Deira. (OOC: I misposted before) In the PLA military command center... The Deiran commanding officer was brought through lines of Integritist troops to Colonel Mitchell. They stepped inside Colonel Mitchell's field HQ, and began negotiating. After a lenghty conversation Colonel Mitchell said, "You are a ballsy man; but you should get back to your troops." Once the Deiran Officer had left, the Integritist troops mounted a full invasion from every angle, and from the skies. The attack was ruthless, they had been insulted by the cockiness of the Deiran commander. Maximum force was going to be used. Tanks engaged in armoured warfare in the streets, while infantry used a technique called mouse-holing. They would blow a hole in the wall on a room and clear it with out entering through doors; that were expected entry routes. In the initial surge hundreds were struck by Deiran bullets. Bombers dropped their payloads over the center of the city, while the rest of the PLA was fighting its way inward. Attack helicopters suffered heavy losses in the urban battle; but were a useful support for troops when they needed it. Fighters were called in to take out specific buildings and enemy strongholds. Transport helicopters dropped special forces onto rooftops. The troops fought downwards. Communication was key, because there were so many Integritists everywhere; friendly fire was a serious concern. Buildings that were being cleared from the rooftop were allocated as 'no-fire' buildings for fighters. Many military specialists sat around computers and radios coordinating the offensive. (OOC: Il Duce misposted before) Deira was doomed and everyone in the country knew it. if the UIT didn't conquer Deira then the broken economy would force the country to collapse. 30% of the gpvernment budget was spent on the army! That was why Deira would fall within three months and the loss of Zeray did not matter at all. Colonel Leodwalding was stuck for ideas. The building he was in was being flattened by enemy bombs. His anti aircraft guns were proving their worth though. Despite this some Integrists had landed on the roof of City Hall that was the Deiran HQ. Shots were fired by combat troops and administrative corps alike. Leodwalding grasped his revolver and emerged into the main chamber where the fighting was fiercest like a demon. He fired with incredible accuracy in a bloody rage. when he ran out of bullets he smashed Integrist skulls with the empty barrel of the gun. Eventually his beserk rage subsided and the sheer weight of numbers forced him to flee the building. He hid in a public toilet where an Integrist officer had been viciously attacked with a knife. Colonel Leodwalding emerged a few minutes later in the guise of an enemy officer. He ordered members of the PLA in the vicinity to fall back. He said that the Dux had betrayed his people and that the tenets of the Integrist party had been abandoned by Colonel Mitchell. He said that too many Integrist lives had been wasted by the PLA. He said that any true Integrist would rise against the Colonel and even the Dux. A small number of the UIT troops followed him towards the Integrist HQ, shooting their fellow soldiers and calling them to join the uprising. Some Deirans recognised Colonel Leodwalding and joined him. Zeray was thrown into chaos and Deiran civilians and soldiers inflicted more casualties on the shaken Integrists. Zeray, Deira Chaos spread through out the Integritist forces. There were simply too many people to be effectively conducted. Integritist Special Forces were clearing a building; when suddenly it was struck by Integritist fighters. One of the military advisers saw the event unfold and yelled out ion rage, "What the f*ck!". He was furious, he advised Colonel Mitchell that command has lost control of the invading forces. Colonel Mitchell was shocked; he believed that with his overwhelming forces, he would surely win. But the size of his army proved to be his downfall. He ordered all troops to fall back to the suburbs. They were to fallback to the West of Zeray and occupy that area. The Deiran Army in Zeray had survived the Integritist assault. The desert in North Deira The Integritist troops; all of them from Groenland were fortified in well camouflaged positions. When the Deirans arrived they were ambushed by desert experts. The 'city-dwellers' and the Berbers were surprisingly effective in unison. The 'city-dwellers' played the more traditional roles while the Berbers used the desert as a weapon against the enemy. Shooting from the sand dunes, and navigating the seemingly unnavigable land with ease. The Berbers showed their true worth in this battle. |

Colonel Leodwalding ordered the remains of the Deiran army to return to their positions. They had forced the PLA to retreat to the west and slowly the Deirans took back the streets, building by buildin and street by street. There were less than 450 professional soldiers and about 2000 armed civilians left. Leodwalding changed back into his official uniform and got into one of the 20 remaining tanks to greet the two legions advancing from the east. Their Colonel was of Berician extraction and was called Verrano Steying. He issued orders that his men should help Leodwalding's to regain the city if they could. "Colonel Steying, I have been waiting for you. The situation is this: our men number 3450 including armed civilians. The PLA is in the western suburbs and are in dissarray. We are slowly retaking the city." Colonel Steying sighed when he heard this. He had heard that Leodwalding was on the verge of victory and had hoped to make a name for himself as a hero of Deira. This seemed to be impossible. He envied Colonel Leodwalding and general Wuffing. They were in the thick of the fighting. General Wuffing wished he had more troops. His 500 were being slaughtered by the Berbers and Groenlanders. His tanks were nearing the Groenlander line but his infantry were being divided and seperated by the Berber desert warfare tactics. His astute mind weighed the chances of victory. He decided to retreat to Nybril immediately. |

The Berbers and Groenlanders hadn't left the desert. General Wuffing had escaped back to Nybril with barely 50 survivors from the 500 he had taken there. President Leodwalding was understandably angry. "Wuffing, you imbecile, what have you done?! You take three legions to help my cousin and then you take a third of that force to the northern desert on a whim! The Berbers can have that land if they want it. We don't need it! You have single-handedly destroyed our military capability. We have a grand total of 1500 professional soldiers out of 3420 last year! The remaining forces in Zeray are desperate. They have turned the tables on the PLA but the result could go either way. You have lost this war!" Coenred Leodwalding was going grey despite his age of 27. He was paying the price of a successful career in politics and he had no time for failed generals. "Wuffing," he continued "you are fired. You are no longer a member of the Deiran Independence Party and neither are you a soldier at any level. I have taken the liberty of exiling you to Bernicia immediately. Guards!" he shouted, and two men in uniform dragged the loyal former General away and threw him into a police car. That was the last time the two colossi of the Deiran Independence Party met. The two Colonels marched towards the front line where the fighting was strongest. The Deirans had advanced marginally since that mornning but the centre was firmly in Deiran hands. "Did you know" asked Colonel Steying "that my uncle was the last king of Steyingland? It became Bernicia after the civil war, of course." "I didn't know that. My uncle was the King of Bernicia until 13 years ago. I was twelve when he was murdered. It seems that we both have a right to that throne." "Indeed" agreed Steying "We are making progress in western Zeray. We should probably offer the Integrist leader the chance to surrender." "I did that a while ago. He declined but I'm sure he will be open to negotiation now." Withthat the wo Colonels commandeered a jeep and approached the UIT line. |
