In the central square of Nybril, President Coenred Leodwalding mounted a flag-strewn podium to address his new subjects. "People of Deira, we have been to long under the thumb of the imperial oppressors. The Yeldans have ruled us and we have bent to their will but now the time has come for freedom, for revolution and for the Republic of Deira to rise! "Today I offer you freedom. I offer you an independent Deira if you will fight for it. Today is the day of the foundation of the Republic of Deira. Today is the day of the declaration of war with the Empire of Yeldashay!" As speeches went it was short and largely unindpiring but it captured the assembled Deirans' imaginations and a deafening cheer shook the surounding buildings. President Leodwalding controlled most of what used to be western Yeldashay and small pro-Yeldan battalions were still engaging in guerrilla warfare with the Deiran legions around Lapan. Just a week ago Leodwalding had been the Leader of a revolutionary cadre called the Deiran Independence Party and despite the many promises he had issued of democracy he had no plans of announcing elections until the Yeldans had been defeated. The President was confident that the Yeldans would be defeated: Emperor Tugin-da was a less than inspiring figure, kept, as he was, in his grand palace far to the east. The Yeldan armed forces had no border with Deira and the Bernicians who divided them had pledged not to open their borders to the military. Their waters extended so far to the south that the Air Force would run out of fuel long before they reached the Deiran coast and the Navy would have limited effectivity as all they could do was blockade Lapan. In short, the President was optimistic that the Deirans could fend off the Yeldans and might even win if they forged an alliance with the massively more populous Bernicia. |

On the HIMS Chalcon, berthed in Lak harbour, Emperor Tugin-da of Yeldashay assessed the situation in the company of his advisors. "Our military is much larger than theirs. Why can't we just send our army there?" It was a fair point and many dukes and senior military personnel could see no reason why not. "Because, your Imperial Majesty" General Kiridan answered "there would be nowhere for them to go when they got there. The Deirans will have erected coastal defences by the time we have skirted Bernician territorial waters.". General Kiridan was a matchless military mind as the Yeldan high command were findng out. "So air and amphibious attacks are blocked to us. " piped in Admiral Gove " We must attack by sea or not at all. I suggest we keep the Chalcon here for auxilary use and send the rest of the fleet to blockade Lapan and destroy coastal defences." It seemed Kiridan had met his match. The Emperor had just one point to clear up. "What of this new ship, what's it called? The Yeldan Empress, is it?" "Ahh, the aircraft carrier. It is only half built but when it is ready we will be able to launch air raids on Deira. It will be ready in a year, though: we will have to fend the revolutionaries off for that time." This anouncement was followed by sharp intakes of breath around the room. "Outrageous!" bellowed Emperor Tugin-da "We will defeat them within a year, aircraft carrier or no aircraft carrier! When you have takencontrol of their coasts your entire fleet will return to pick up the army! That is my final word!!" With that, he left, leaving behind him a cabin-ful of startled advisors wondering how they could dissuade their absolute monarch from this terrible plan. |

In Nybril city hall President Coenred Leodwalding was being briefed by his Generals. "...And that is why the Yeldans cannot attack us by land or air. Therefore their only option is to send their Navy to ravage our coast and port." the rotund and fatherly General Wuffing finished, smiling and seating himself. The President, a meagre, hawk-like figure, mulled over this information. "Their Navy is nearly twice as large as ours but the Deiran fleet is newer. What are the chances of us winning a sea battle?" "None at all," replied Admiral Wihtgar, quite jovially "our ships are built to their designs. The only way we could win would be with Superman gliding down to save us!" "But we could send, say, the Nybril, Zeray, Lapan and Sarkid to slow them down, allowing our submarine to escape and make itself as big a nuiscance as possible." "But, Mr President," replied the admiral "the President would have no way of returning. Anyway, we have no plans of yet of how to defend our coastline from the aggressors. We need to organise coastal batteries, DAF airstrips and naval defence programs." The admiral was getting flustered by the thought of enacting Leodwalding's insane plan. "This is what we need to do:" Leodwalding answered "we will station DAF squadrons as far inland as possible: we will let the Yeldans blockade the rest of our ships in Lapan harbour while the President attacks their trade and military supplies from some sort of safe port. This will lengthen the Naval war and give us time to consolidate the whole of Deira and defeat the Yeldans already here. Any questions?". There were none. |

Admiral Gove, on the bridge of the HIMS Dauntless, commanded a fleet of five destroyers, three frigates and two submarines. As the Dauntless neared Thyrani Island, the easternmost piont of Deira, four enemy ships hove into view from around a headland. This close to Thyrani there was much danger of beached hulls and the coral reefs were uncharted so thirty minutes passed before the fleets were within range. "This is Admiral Gove" said the admiral through the radio "Dragon, Defender, Diamond, Daring and Lak, assault these vessels. The Dauntless will support. Shark, Dolphin, Herl and Belishba withdraw to a safe distance." As his command obeyed his orders Gove had time to contemplate how he was going to win this conflict with his flagship only half-built as his Emperor had ordered him to. He could find no military startegies to avoid being decapitated so he decided to concentrate on the matter at hand. The Dragon, Defender and Daring had engaged the Deiran flagship Nybril but the Sarkid was causing them some problems and the Dragon was in a bad way. The Diamond had ploughed straight into the Lapan, leaving them both helpless to the onslaughts of the Zeray and the Lak respectively. Before too long the Nybril, Diamond and Lapan had sunk, sailors making for shore so they could loot the wreckage the next morning. The Dragon was dangerously low in the waterline but was holding its own against the Sarkid while the Zeray was being pursued by the Lak, Defender and Daring just over the horizon. Admiral Gove guided the Dauntless towards the crippled Dragon and ordered it to pick up Yeldan sailors before launching a full broadside on the Sarkid... |

Admiral Wihtgar, despite the pennant on the currently submarine Nybril, was on board the Zeray which was being pursued by three Yeldan ships. "The Lapan has gone, Admiral" he was told by a junior Warfare Officer. "What of the President and Sarkid?" he replied. "We have had reports that the Dragon has disengaged and been replaced by the Dauntless. The President seems to have escaped though we have no way of knowing because of the stealth devices on it." The following ships were trying to drive the Zeray into Lapan Harbour but they had not completely rounded Thyrani Island yet. Wihtgar decided to turn, fight and probably become a posthumous hero instead of a living coward. He turned starboard, away from the coast, firing at the foremost ship (the Lak) in doing so and slotted between it and the Defender which was adjacent to the coast. In such tight quarters the Daring couldn't inflict any real damage and took up its place behind the Zeray and in front of its allies. Wihtgar let the tidedrive him towards the shore, running the Defender aground. The Zeray turned sharp a-port, the fine Deiran steel splitting the Lak in two pieces. In the less confined space the Daring inflicted a lot of damage on Wihtgar's stern. "D**n!" shouted the Deiran Admiral as the whole ship jolted. The vessel was nigh on unsailable after its stint between the two Yeldans. Most of the torpedos and guns were damaged in some way and salt water had flooded the engine and, in fact, the lower decks. Now the relatively undamaged Daring was slowly destroying his ship. "Sir," said the Warfare Officer" the Sarkid has sent out an SOS and says it is almost completely below water. We have had no communication from the President" "Lieutenant," replied Admiral Wihtgar "the President has abandoned us to our fate." He stood back from the controls and waited for the sea to consume him. |

On the bridge of the HIMS Dauntless Admiral Gove poured himself a glass of champagne as a reward for a very trying battle won. The survivors from the Diamond and the Dragon had been split between the remaining ships and the Daring had rejoined the main fleet. A few hours ago the submarine Shark had reported a faint disturbance and had left to investigate it. " Set a course for Lapan. The Shark will rejoin us there" he ordered a subordinate. The Daring, Belishba, Herl and Dolphin followed the Dauntless towards their objective: the great port of Lapan and the six Virtue class frigates within.

Colonel Hybris-ru Fortetlis had, until recently, been the commanding officer of the Zeray garrison. The fairly young man had risen through the ranks by a mixture of skill and rich family members. Before the war Zeray had been very quiet with only the trade with the North Sea Territories justifying its existence at all for the past century or so. Now, the NST had completely boycotted Deira and was suspected to be preparing an invasion to help the Yeldans. Now, Colonel Fortetlis commanded a ragtag band of about 1500 loyalists, mainly comprised of Fortetlis's former troops. When the revolution started the Zerayin Corps of the Deiran Independence Party had organised mass riots throughout the city and, the following week, had begun a phase of urban warfare including the destruction of many civic buildings and the deaths of over 1200 soldiers. The remnant that the Colonel commanded was hiding in the forests above Zeray and was engaging in raids on the suburbs and the Sarkid highway. " Good morning, Sir" said Captain Jikipoe as he entered Fortetlis's makeshift tent " we have looted several lorries containing necessities. Food is still short but we hope to remedy that situation by foraging and farming. As of the military situation ..." he trailed off, humoured by his commanding officer's eyes lighting up at the prospect of war. "... we have news of a legion or two coming up from Sarkid to get rid of us." "A legion .. that's five hundred men! It might be a bit tough to handle a legion and you say it might be two! How will we survive?" Fortetlis was panicking. Captain Jikipoe stood silently while his Colonel calmed down. Fortetlis proceeded "OK... when will these Deirans arrive?" "Tomorrow, sir. Our intelligence service isn't up to much, sir" " Then we will set up a two way roadblock thirty-five miles away from Zeray. Organise some Guerrilla platoons to hide in the trees on either side of the road. We will do our bit for Yeldashay even when two legions are against us!" The next day Captain Jikipoe joined Colonel Fortetlis atop the barricade. "It's very high, Captain. Over fifteen feet if I'm any judge. I don't suppose the Zerayins have gotten wind of this yet?" The Captain replied "They probably have. We emptied every lorry that came down here for hours. The Zerayins will know by now that we are causing a nuisance, sir." Half an hour later the Sarkid legions appeared over the horizon, tanks in front and columns of marching soldiers following with more tanks in the rearguard. When they saw the barricade the entire column was thrown into confusion, allowing the Yeldan flanks to move in and destroy or capture over three hundred tanks which were added to the barricade. The Deirans withdrew about five miles, looking for a way around the thick forest on either side of the highway. Colonel Fortetlis ordered the Geurrilla Platoons to block any trail through the forest and the barriccade was moved forward four miles But the scouts Fortetlis sent reported that the Deirans had dug trenches. "Captain,"Colonel Fortetlis said "this may take quite a long time to win" |

As the RDS President neared Lak Captain Wuffing, a nephew of the General, addressed his Submariners over the PA. "Attention all crew: our orders are to dispupt Yeldan shipping and effectively cut off Yeldashay from the rest of the world - including its fleet- until they surrender. We will keep in stealth conditions for as long as possible and hopefully find a port to operate out of before too long. The only military vessels near us are the severely outdated HIMS Chalcon and the half-built HIMS Yeldan Empress. I would like to congratulate you all for your action in the Battle of Thyrani Island in which the HIMS Shark was destroyed with all souls on board. I would also like two minutes silence for our colleagues on board the Nybril, Lapan, Sarkid and Zeray ... ... ... ... and three cheers for their heroism!" as cheering shook the submarine, Captain Wuffing wondered how long this war would last. From what his uncle had told him the Yeldan loyalists would be defeated within the year but if the Yeldan Empress wasn't sunk then the Yeldans would be able to land more troops and soundly beat the Deiran seperatists. To win, then, Captain Wuffing would have to destroy the Yeldan Empress before she relieved the rest of the Yeldan fleet. The main priority, though, was finding a safe port before the 115 men under his command starved to death. Captain Wuffing sent the message again, changing the parameters a little: From: Republic of Deira Submarine President To: Anyone RDS President requires safe port from which to attack Yeldan shipping. Must be in Agabia. |

Outside Lapan harbour the five Yeldan vessels remained blocking the harbour entrance like giant metal rottweilers. Admiral Gove was, like all his colleagues, weary of extended peace. They were scarcely a mile from six state-of-the-art frigates who simply weren't coming out to play. Every day the gunners shot down dozens of Panavia Tornadoes. The Tornadoes made up the entire airborne section of the Deiran Air Force and they were easy prey for the Yeldan guns. The ratings and officers were, quite simply, bored. Gove knew that even the dreaded maneuvers coudn't liven up the ratings and decided to abandon them for the day. "Have we had any word from the Shark yet?" he asked a subordinate. "No, but we have had word about it from the Deirans, sir." he replied "Listen to this:
That is all we managed to hear of the message as the code's encryption was constantly changing. It was probably as a security measure. For that short while they were using our code." They both knew the meaning of this. The Shark had been destroyed by a stealth submarine: the RDS President. Admiral Gove was the first to speak "The President slipped through the net. That whole battle was just a diversion for the submarine's escape. Pass me that telephone." "Yes, hello your Imperial Majesty. we have had news that the RDS President has escaped and is now sailing free in the vicinity. Oh, you know already. A message from the President? Encrypted with foreign codes? I can't send any ships back. We should arm all the merchant ships and make them travel together. Goodbye, Your imperial Majesty." "They sent a message asking for a safe port to attack our trade vessels. It's probably going to be OK." With that, Admiral Gove settled into another boring day of blockading Deiran frigates. He hoped Yeldashay would be remembered for never having a successful revolution, especially not a war of independence. |
