Character Number: 2

Name: R'vri
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Rank: Tourmaline Weyrling
Location: Relasun Weyr
Sexual Preference: Unsure - Bi- or Homosexual
Partner: none

Appearance: A tall, lightly built man with broad shoulders and relatively powerful limbs, R'vri is well tanned (where you can see his skin) despite holding a Journeyman's knot in Weaving and bears a number of scars across his hands. The majority of these are on his knuckles and palms; the former are from fighting and the latter are from weaving accidents. They stand out in stark relief against his dark skin, the pale marks ranging from narrow and short to wide and long, and every variation inbetween. Every muscle seems smooth-hewn, as if this male between a child and a man were carved from living wood the shade of honey rather than a creature of flesh and blood and bone. That is, they would if he showed them to anyone.

Though his hair is a deep chocolately brown, rich in colour and without the slightest wave, R'vri hides it all beneath a dark red hat, a simple thing that fits snugly around his head with a corner at each temple and ear. There are brighter threads woven through it, apparently at random. At the back's bottom, there are a pair of small clips that keep it fastened to his shirt - most of which are high-collared. R'vri shows as little skin as possible, often wearing gloves even in summer and removing his upper-calf boots only for bed - and he leaves his socks on. Some suggest he does this to hide the shade of his skin - naturally dark, always seeming tanned to a dark honey tone, even in midwinter - or that he is merely modest to the highest extreme when it comes to his body. Neither is true - he does it to hide the thick, rope-like scars that decorate his back, torso, and legs, some even trailing onto his upper arms. They are the reminders of his parents, reminders he does his utmost best to rid himself of. But who can destroy their past?

As for the skin R'vri does show, it is stretched cleanly over a fine bone structure, giving him a face of almost delicate texture and elfin angularity. His black eyes are tilted ever so slightly, the short lashes failing to disguise their quick movements and eternal, almost desperate watchfulness. Though pale red or pink in most people, R'vri has lips just a few tones lighter than his honey skin. The only true marking of his features is a smooth, narrow and barely visible scar across his left cheekbone and trailing off above his ear. It is the only suggestion, other than his hands, of the cruel marks strewn across the rest of his lanky body.

Personality: Often appearing as quiet and thoughtful, though dedicated and hard-working, R'vri is usually trying to forget his past by immersing himself in work. He tends to take on too many jobs and finish them all, reveling in the fact that he went without thinking about the scars adorning his body for a few hours, a day. He plunges whole-heartedly into every single task set in front of him, not to mention those of his nearby neighbours - and is soon back asking for more. His superiors first worried that he would burn himself out before long, but soon realized that he just added more and more to his workload and worked even harder on incredibly limited amounts of sleep. If he wants something, this is one person who will work himself well into the ground and straight through Pern if that's what's needed to get the jobs done. No point saying 'job' singularly - he rarely limits himself to so few.

You never have to worry about R'vri being late or passing a deadline - no matter how much he has to do, somehow he always remains punctual. You also don't have to worry about him getting into a fight - he only does if he isn't short on time and is strongly reminded of his parents. If he gets too deep into a flashback, he'll only stop when he's exhausted himself to the point that he falls asleep or unconscious - usually unconscious. Seemingly inane, every day things can trigger one of his episodes - the smell of blood tends to, as does people sneaking up behind him and grabbing him. Even someone who resembles one of his parents could suddenly become the target of his mindless rage as he regresses and thinks he's saving himself from his tormenters.

In the rare times when R'vri cannot fill himself with work, he writes. Poetry and songs, for the most part, though he could not play an instrument to save his life and has little concept of notes. His topics vary wildly, though the theme usually has some link to sorrow and grief. He never writes openly about his past, but cloaks his intense emotions in metaphor and flowered wording. He has a small, wooden box filled with both blank hides and ink-covered ones, the ones he thinks are best saved and the others recycled. An example of his work follows...

Across blackened fields and ruined Holds
Silver rain comes tumbling down
Water mixes with blood and dew
Slowly seeping into the ground.

Drums echo across the hills
Every beat unanswered
Through the windy storms they ride
Glimmering, bright dancers.

Five great colours they come in
Blue and bronze, green and brown
Mightiest of them all is gold
All soar above the scar'red ground.

Across green fields and empty Holds
White clouds drift with laughter
While inside somebody weeps
Mourning over slaughter.

Perhaps there is still a seed of joy, of lightness, of pleasant words easily spoken buried deep within R'vri. Maybe someone can help him forget his past and move forward into the future and out of the dark. Mayhap there is hope for this boy on the brink of manhood. There is no way to tell, no way to be sure that he will not lapse into darkness, slip through the cracks of society and become part of the shadows. One thing is certain, though: he will never stand back and let someone else be abused in the way that he was. He felt the pain, he dealt with the pain (or so he believes, not thinking about the lingering scars on his heart and mind), and he doesn't want anyone else to have to go through the same dark tunnel to get out.

History: R'vri's early life was dark and filled with misery. From a very young age, the boy was beaten, first lightly by his mother for 'not behaving' though she told him to do naught, then gradually the load of abuse increased. Soon after he was first punched by his mother, his father began whipping him for every slight, imagined or not, conceivable or not. Even if it was something someone else did, his parents took it out on him. As he grew up crying himself to sleep and doing the latter brokenly and painfully, he naively believed that his situation was the same as that of everyone else. It was first suggested otherwise when he was eleven, and happened to see another boy, one who lived nearby, crying. Though rather shy himself, he headed over to ask what was wrong.

It turned out he was crying because his father had gotten drunk and slapped him. Once R'vri got over his initial shock, he started laughing, unintentionally driving the younger boy to even further depths of despair. See, R'vri took the other kid's situation and compared it to his own, and immediately wondered why he was making such a big deal out of it. Well, the two eventually got it all sorted out and the kid, not exactly reassured, headed home and told his parents about R'vri, and how his parents treated him. The boy's parents mildly freaked and quickly took the matter to the Lord Holder of Bitra. He sent a small group of men to remove R'vri from his home and imprison his parents. They were too late, but everyone readily believed the tale that his parents resisted and the guards had to use force. In truth, they found R'vri over the corpses of his parents, crying not at their fate but at what he himself had done.

After a few, rather useless months in fostering, he was apprenticed to the Weaverhall. Quiet and reserved, he first snapped only three months after arriving. A roommate had gotten in a fight and received a bloody nose, and wanted R'vri to make sure it wasn't broken. At first the smell just made him feel sick, and he hurried to the privy. Fortunately it was empty, and it took three hours before he was found, huddled in a corner and whispering 'they deserved it' and 'I'm not sorry for them' and 'no... no.... no!' repeatedly. They took him to the Healer, but there appeared to be nothing wrong with him. Now, by this time most knew of his past, if not very many details, and some suggested it had something to do with that.

Whatever the reason, he worked hard enough to make up for his occasional incident and eventually progressed to journeyman rank. He'd gotten in a number of fights during flashbacks, but only at those times. He had an excelent reputation, barring those events, and was sent to Relasun Weyr to train under the Master Weaver stationed there. Only moments after arriving, however, a dragon, a blue unlike the green who had transported him, landed nearby and asked him - HIM, the journeyman weaver - if he had been Searched. When R'vri hesitantly answered to the negative, the blue snorted at some comment of his rider and did so himself. With a message sent to his former to-be master, R'vri found himself on a new path, once directed to the Candidates' Barracks.

Despite the rage of the great queen dragon Kaith, R'vri attended the Hatching and Impressed the mutant Tourmaline dragon Hanadryth. Poised to enter Weyrling training, he is worried about both his future and his ability to care for the strange little dragon who chose him on Kaith's dangerous sands.
