Welcome to Relasun Weyr... Relasun is just another Weyr. Riders and staff come, live, and die, some horribly. Greens and golds Rise into the skies and fill the Hatching Sands with hardening clutches. Men and women meet their matches, both among stumbling hatchlings and among their peers. You know how life throws you curves? Well, Relasun was pitched a particularly nasty twist. Though Relasun is a well-occupied Weyr, it's pre-Eighth Pass and a number of weaker Weyrwomen has kept the gold population low. Then again, it may have just been bad luck. Either way, the senior Weyrwoman died in childbirth, and the only other queenrider was quick to take her position as Weyrwoman. She did well at first, seeming to settle into the job and responsibilities. Then strange things started to happen. Wings sent out for practice were called back by their queen, who only knew that Halura, her rider, requested it. Other orders were countermanded, though she herself gave them in the first place. A full wing even disappeared between times, though the bronzerider in charge kept his head and returned them all alive. Then her queen Rose, and everyone relaxed, thinking that it was merely proddiness that caused the abnormalities encircling the Weyrwoman. They were wrong. Three days before her queen was due to clutch, J'relen, rider of bronze Ranoreth and new Weyrleader, died in what was recorded as a drunken Gather brawl. No one apparently grasped the significance of the Weyrwoman quietly slipping away from the bloody scene. However, there were worse things to come. After Kaith clutched, with two queen eggs to the joy of the Weyr, a wing was sent to investigate a mountain, which holders had reported to be smoking. Only three of them returned, and all of them were badly burnt, with their dragons bearing the brunt of the injuries. Though they were treated by the healers to the best of their abilities, by morning all were dead. Halura had been assisting the healers. One saw something odd, but he kept to himself the fact that she had slipped a powder into the numbweed before it was applied. With the eggs hardening and rumours beginning to spread through the Weyr, is it truly up to the candidates to find a solution to the problem of an insane Weyrwoman? |
