 On a small island in the Western Ring, a newly founded weyrhold struggles to survive. Though riders have come from all over Pern® to help the settlers of Mavros, the earth of their island is grubless, and burrows are a constant risk. Dragon hatchings raised spirits in autumn and winter, as did the presence of a new Weyrleader, D'ze of Bronze Exionth. But no one, not even Weyrwoman Oria, suspects that the command of Mavros' fighting dragons is now in the hands of a fellis addict... Spring comes to the island slowly, and the unrelenting rhythm of Threadfall tires the First Wing to the bone as they struggle to protect not only their home, but the few habitable islands around it. If Mavros is ever to become self-sufficient, these isles must be protected for farming and settlement. Here, every new arrival could make the difference between survival and desolation.
