The Weyr

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Weyr Bowl
The Bowl of Relasun Weyr is not round. It is not even close. Instead, it resembles a wide canyon. The sides are steep and pocked irregularly with weyrs. The ledges near each vary widely in size and often bear a dragon of appropriate size. Tunnels both large and human-sized enter the Bowl along the curved lower edge, often leading downwards at first. While there is no lake within the Bowl, an underground river surfaces from the rock near the lower tip and flows to the nearby Lake Relaskin.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Candidate Barracks
The Candidate Barracks are built into a relatively small cavern near the Hatching Grounds, which can be reached by only a short, steep tunnel. Walls of wood and stone have been constructed to divide the area into small rooms barely large enough for a single person. There are some fifteen along the wall nearest the Hatching Grounds for female candidates and another forty-odd for males. Each 'room' has a cot, chest, and approximately four square feet of standing room.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Hatching Grounds
These famous sands are divided from the Bowl by a thin layer of rock - a mere three feet in places - and a dragonlength or so of height. Steep tunnels are required to reach them by foot, and a dragon must carefully drop from the open roof roughly five dragonlengths above. Carved around the warm sands are spectator benches and dragon ledges. A small stone platform is set into the sand below these stands on one side, perfect for the clutching gold and her mate's riders.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Kitchens
The kitchens and dining area of Relasun Weyr are situated below the Weyrling Barracks but not the Hatching Grounds. The dining area is slightly terraced, gradually dropping until there are only a short flight of stairs to reach Bowl level. The kitchens are lined with sturdy cooking hearths, spring-pools, and counters. The dining area is lined with benches and tables, with a night hearth at the end nearest the kitchens. Here, klah and often food may be found at all the sharding times of night when no one in their right mind would possibly be still awake.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Lake of Shadows
The Lake of Shadows is so named because the only natural light that reaches it comes from a small opening near the very tip of the Weyr. There are, however, many entrances and most are large enough to permit even queen dragons to enter comfortably. The Lake curls under most of the Bowl floor, though it is quite a ways down and supports the ceiling with massive stone pillars. There is a slight current tugging to the south, though it is only dangerous right near the outflow river. If one is somehow pulled through that barred opening, they must hold their breath until they are released at the edge of the Bowl, some twenty seconds later. The primary reason for the bars, expensive as they were, is to keep young weyrbrats from daring each other to death.

The rest of the lake is quite safe. The depth changes gradually in most areas, though deepens quickly at several entrances, and water only half-fills the cavern. The water is quite warm as it is heated by the same source as the Hatching Grounds. Since it is underground, visitors are encouraged to sign out the glows kept at each entrance to light their ways. Should anyone become lost, they often need only yell and another swimmer will almost always hear the echo.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Rider Weyrs
Adult weyrs are scattered throughout both sides of the Bowl. They are rarely of regular height and only a few are truly accessable from inside, though many have tunnels to nearby weyrs. These special rooms belong to gold and occasionally bronze dragons and their riders. Whatever the rank, most rooms are at least similar in design. All have a curtained or walled sleeping chamber, a small sitting room, and a connected weyr for the dragon. Many lower and some ranking weyrs have bathing chambers built into the room, and nearly one third have external stairs that eventually lead to the ground.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Lake Relaskin
As it it open to the elements and considerably cooler than the lake in the bowels of the Weyr - not to mention slightly farther away - Lake Relaskin is not as popular as the Lake of Shadows. There are areas where the ground drops away suddenly and others where low levels create islands. Some areas are weedy, others sandy, others rocky. Relaskin is a lake that is unsure of itself, and so is a mixture of traits. There is one constant, however: it is cold compared to the Lake of Shadows.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) The Sky
How can one describe the sky? It is blue and sometimes dotted or covered with clouds. At Relasun, it it more often clear than not, and home to a relentless Rukbat in summer. Winds can be unpredictable at times, namely spring and fall, and occasional storms pound the spires of the mountain Weyr below. When the weather is fair, dragons may often be found lazily circling or darting about in a game of tag, and most of the time the riders stay home. The sky is the land of dragons, and this is the chance for dragons to truly shine.

Regular Forum (No New Posts) Mating Flights
While the Flights of greens and golds usually begin within the Weyr's confines, only rarely do they remain there. Here a dragon may lead her followers as far as her wings will bear her, and then a little further. The only restraints are really to shield the eyes of the poor holders below. Keep the maturity below R, please!
