The days had grown duller. A part of him wished for that once-trail, where there were orcs to fight and hobbits to save. Unwise perhaps, but it has been too long since he'd had such battles. It was perhaps this reason why, late one night, an idea assaulted him. Beware of thoughts comes late at night. They aren't turned properly. They are free of sense and restrictions. And they make even a practical dwarf less wary of things. Gimli breathed deeply as he moved through the folded shadows of the land. His gray garments, dusty with the ocher from soil he loved so much, blended easily with the surrounding. He moved with surprising swiftness, for someone with his stature. Part of it was that despite the myth and popular beliefs about dwarves being slow and plodding, they who were created by the Vala Aulë, were sure-footed. They had to be. The perils of the type of land they liked to live in required it. Another was that he was rather afraid where he was venturing into, so that he moved faster than usual. Truth be told, the best description for him at the moment was 'darting'. One moment, he was in the forest, and the next, he was scrambling away from it. But the 'fierce and jealous love, the desire of hearts of dwarves' was true in Gimli and just as soon as he felt safe enough in open land, he inched yet again into Fangorn Forest. He knew he was being ridiculous. He knew, should someone be looking at him now, that they were laughing at him. But he wanted a message given to his friend, Legolas, and knew that this was the best possible way to get it to the elf. True, he could have gone to any of the two kings who were his heart's friend, but he bluster at the thought. Admit to missing the company of an elf? No matter that it was Legolas? Unthinkable. But the trees, they were a different matter altogether. "Don't be a fool," he said to himself. "Now go on again. And this time, stay." Ah, but he could not recall, and that was the problem. Part of him was certain they told that he was welcome if he came with Legolas. The other half insisted that with or without the elfin prince, that he had naught to fear this wooded place. Grimly, the dwarf looked at his axe, propped on a rock formation that was taller than he was. It would be courteous to leave it there. But it could also mean suicide. One never know with trees, after all... Ahead of him, he saw the leaves sway, back and forth. |

The Ent had paused in the midst of the youngling rowans he had promised to tend. The overshadowing grandfather oak and grandmother willow made it difficult for these young trees to survive. Quickbeam had looked in on them night and day, rain and drought. As he came to them now, his keen eyes spotted movement along the edge of the forest. As he watched, a dwarf flitted in and out of the trees like a sparrow trying to find a suitable place to nest in Quickbeam’s boughs. Being an Ent, he had no fear of marching through Fangorn Forest. It took him several moments, therefore, to recognize the dwarf’s movements as hesitant. He should have been angry that an axe-bearer came to their forest, or at least suspicious that anyone had come here at all. Quickbeam, however, was younger than his fellow Ents and more hasty in his actions. Quickbeam’s laughter was like the creaking of boughs in a high wind. His leaves shook with his peals of amusement as he took seven long strides towards the dwarf. “Ba-rum, Ba-ra-rum, Master Dwarf,” the Ent said, laughing still. “Your people are not often found in the trees. What brings you here to the ancient Forest of Fangorn?” |
