Fhaleen sat looking out at the sea. The glowing light of the moon reflected on the waters and to his eye looked as if the waters sparkled. He was alone now, it had been days since he had left the capital and hours since leaving Dorwinion. With a pencil he sketched the countryside of his home. Did he miss something? His mind was cluttered with thoughts of what transpired and what was to come. *** Earlier Fhaleen sat at his desk looking over status reports as Urlocke and Atii quietly converse in the corner. The noise of his mothers entrance does not move him even as she enters the room. "My children have returned!" she says loudly with a smile on her face and arms open "And married off to one of the wealthiest Lord Houses I hope." walking toward Atii and giving her a hug. Fhaleen puts down the document he was reading and says with a smile. "Mother how happy to see you." "If you had told me you were coming early I would have made sure to be here. I was out in the countryside for the day looking over the harvest storage." she says walking toward his desk. "Well it is good to see you." Atii says in an attempt to keep the mood light. Cathia looks back and smiles and then faces Fhaleen again who sits expressionless. Fhaleen smiles lightly as he begins to speak. "It is good to see you mother though I should tell you I'm off to the West at daybreak." "So soon?" she says with surprise and yet inquisitively. "We act quickly to meet opportunity at the doorstep." Cathia says nothing looking up, assessing things in her mind. "Well hopefully this time you'll leave me Urlocke." leaning in toward Fhaleen. "Caring for the finer details is his job of course." Leaning back in his chair Fhaleen continues "He will be staying here this time mother but I leave the role of Lady." "Atii?" her hands came down loudly on his table and her tone changed to anger. "I am you mother and the rightful Lady of the house till you marry or I die!" Guards come to the door at the sound as Atti and Urlocke stand in the background, eyes gazed toward the floor. Fhaleen smirks. "You are absolutely right mother. You are a woman of virtue, honesty and compassion." he says coldly. "But in these times that just will not do." Motioning his hands the guards grasp Cathia's arms as her body seems to verge on collapse as if all strength left her body. "There is a villa at the forest of the sea where you shall retire too. I had it built years ago." he says touching her arm lightly. As the guards take her away Atii and Urlocke approach his desk slowly with lowered heads of sadness. Fhaleen hands Urlocke a bundle of documents and he leaves saying nothing. "Well say something." Fhaleen says with a warm tone hoping to lighten the mood. "Some might say you are without heart older brother." Getting up from his chair he moves to the front of his table leaning back on it "In my youth I once inquired about the nature of Eru's power to a scribe. He was a very old man, once a great warrior of the Wain, very wise. He replied that what we believe about Eru was not always so. Long before the world and all it's beings higher and lesser were created there were many gods. Eru like all were of the same strength and majesty. One day they had decided that they would create something new something beautiful that would be the crown jewel of their power. But for thousands of ages the Gods could not agree on any of the details and they had no solutions to decide on even how they would come to an agreement. Dismayed by this Eru sat and thought deeply until finally he decided the biggest obstacle to this goal was the other Gods. One by one he eliminated the gods until finally he was the only being of greater creation creating the beauty of the world we see. You see sister that was his strength, the ability to create without bounds. Atii smiles. "So my brother thinks himself a God?" "What is it to be man my sister if not to strive toward Godhood?" *** The train of horses and carriages wheeled on to the West. Fhaleen sat and drew, it relaxed him. |
