Master Kahlin was full of wisdom and lore. Milo was quite jealous of the breath of the dwarf’s learning. His knowledge was specific to Hobbits, though he was working diligently to correct that mistake. The Hobbit soaked up the words Kahlin shared. “Why, yes, I do think I’d dare to enter Fangorn,” he said honestly. “I have heard it is quite dangerous, but my cousin Merry spoke of it fondly. Hobbit love things that are green and things that grow. The shepherds of Fangorn would be no different, I would imagine.” Milo considered what Kahlin said about the movement of Fangorn while he scrambled over boulders and crags. He was at once fascinated and disappointed. It was an adventurer’s dream and a cartographer’s nightmare. Not sure which he would be in Fangorn, he was unsure how to feel about this news. “Hobbits haven’t moved from the Shire in such a long time. I think we’ve mostly forgotten that we came from somewhere else. You must be very brave indeed, Master Kahlin, to leave your home for the Glittering Caves. I don’t know if any new place could drag me away from my little house by the Brandywine. I suppose if there was some greater river and some greater forest …” The Hobbit’s mind drifted back to Gondor and the sight he had seen from the seventh level of Minas Tirith. There was a great river and forest in that kingdom, but Milo had not yet been. One day, he promised himself, he would test his theory. |

"If you feel the need to enter Fangorn, you do so at risk. The shepherds and trees are kind if they do not mistake you as an orc, though there are other creatures that dwell in the wood. Their presence is not to be taken lightly." Kahlin spoke all of this as she continued to pass over rock and stone, downhill toward the trees. They were not far now. "There are many reasons to travel to new places, and though it may seem strange to Halflings, dwarves do not mind it so much," Kahlin replied. "The caves offer much in ways of gem and jewel. And Lord Gimli likes that we are close to the kingdoms of Rohan and Gondor, for our aide and skills of masonry are much needed there in these days," she said. "There are as many things to see and learn though for us, as there are for these young dwarflings," she said, pausing for a moment to check behind her at the line of small dwarves. She stopped for a moment to allow Milo to catch his breath. It seemed that he was not accustomed to travel through the mountains, for he breathed heavily and stumbled. |
