Aragorn accepted the jewel Leoynna pressed into his hand. He guessed at its identity, but he would look at it another time. “This I will tell her and more, Leoynna. You have my word.” He had seen death more than most men ever would, both in battle and in the Houses of Healing. It was not a foreign feeling, this grief. But today, Aragorn felt acutely the loss of this one life. Leoynna was of his people, all of whom he had claimed as his kin. There were few of them left, and Leoynna was so young by their standards. “She looks as our ancestors did,” Aragorn said, with a touch of sorrow and pride in his voice. “Her hair is dark, and her eyes as gray as the stormy sea. She is tall and regal in her bearing. She looks … like you.” Aragorn remained on the field next to Leoynna until the last breath left her. He bowed his head, and quietly sang a lament for his kinswoman. He stood then and crossed the distance to his guard. “Send a messenger ahead with these instructions. One of the King’s House has fallen today. She will be arrayed as a Lady of Arnor and entombed in the Silent Street beneath the dome of stone trees three days hence. Summon all Dunedain in Gondor to attend her funeral. I will speak to Lady Gwenneth tomorrow at sunrise.” |
