“This will work?” King Elessar demanded. The attendants all assured him that he was completely unrecognizable. Aragorn warily observed himself in the looking glass. His tall and imposing frame looked as familiar as ever. The borrowed armor could not hide his regal bearing either. Looking back at Aragorn was simply the High-King of Gondor and Arnor dressed in the blue-and-white of the Swan Knights of Dol Amroth. Andruil was too conspicuous a weapon, so he carried the sword he had wielded as a Ranger before the Shards of Narsil were reforged. Once the helmet was on and visor down, Aragorn surveyed himself again. But for a narrow strip across his eyes, nothing distinguishing could be seen. It would have to do. The King wanted to participate in the lists, and he could not do it if every tournament entrant was terrified of hurting the King. As Aragorn exited the tent, a boy he had never seen before trotted over. His squires had wrangled up this boy to attend the disguised King. “I am Lord Turgol of Dol Amroth,” he said to the boy. “Post my emblem.” Aragorn strode out into the lists while the young boy hung a small shield bearing the crest of a screeching eagle with a spear in its right talon from a wooden peg. He turned to the other entrance, wanting to see who his opponent would be. |
