Okay all. Heather and I have been discussing a possible cure for Thul-in-Gyrth via PM and we've kinda come up with an idea which I thought I'd post up in this thread for everyone to see / give opinions for.

Basically, we thought that since people in Harad are immune to the disease that there must be something in Harad, something common, that their people are exposed to and that that has led to their immunity. We were thinking a cooking herb of some kind. And that perhaps the cooks in Minas Tirith have a small supply of this herb and that they use it in a meal of some kind for those in the Houses of Healing, unknown to them that its actually the secret behind curing the plague. Anyway, there would be an improvement in the health of the sick, alerting them to the cure.

But, we were also thinking that perhaps we could have a small group of people go to Harad to obtain some more of this herb as Gondor's supplies would be small.

Any thoughts? Suggestions?

Gimli's in! <3 That goes without saying, specially since Legolas has already signed up. Where he goes, you find Gimli close behind.

A side note: No, I don't think Elves can get sick, at least not physically. They can get depressed though, or have a certain form of emotional malady that makes them susceptible to dying or even make them want to die. Barring a few instances where empathy made them listless and somber, I can't cite any occasion when an elf was said to die due to a physical sickness, much less contacted one. Not even in the Silmarion, which have more detailed elf history in it. Hope that helped too.

Just to make a note Fhaleen will be traveling to Rohan and unto Gondor in up and coming posts to establish trade routes. At the same time his sister Atii will be visiting Rhovanion and Mirkwood so if anyone if interested in RPing or noting the arrival let me know. :D And welcome Gimli!

I like the idea of the simple cooking herb being the cure.

Cirion would be all in for going to Harad to get more supplies, as he has been there before. I think some of his family has contracted the disease in Dol Amroth, but he doesn't know this yet because he is in Minas Tirith, and also we were planning on having one of his lady's parents getting the disease as well, so he would be motivated on both accounts to go, although I imagine the trip would take a bit of time and it would be too late for the ones that are already sick.

Ciron, being in Harad for the past few years, is probably also immune to the disease, so I wonder if anyone has any other ideas on how he could get involved?

I would love to Ayla to be involved in the cure plot. She is already on her way to Gondor in a thread as we speak. Being 'The Wisdom' Ayla knows much to do about herbs and medicines especially those from Harad/Ateker. Would it be possible to have her recruited for help by somebody after she arrives?

My apologies for not posting in here sooner. You all have great ideas. I could kiss you all for keeping the MP going while my professor tortures me with group work.

The Cure Plot - Since this is Em's idea, Diore gets to discover the cure. :) We've already decided that Aragorn will be in that thread too, right? I think we have more room for Cirion, don't we, Em? Either Aragorn or Cirion could mention the herb is a common ingredient in Harad, and then Diore has her epiphany.

I noticed in the film, the herbal remedies were always mixed with water. That might be a Gondorian/Dunedain way of Healing. What if the antidote in this herb is only effective when burned (such as thrown into the bottom of a sizzling pan, like garlic or salt). It seems like a route the Gondorians wouldn't have immediately thought to do with their herbs.

As Wen pointed out, the journey to Harad to get the herb will take some time. Ayla could get involved as soon as she arrives in Gondor because, if this herb is so common, she probably has a store of it with her. Her supply of the herb could save a few people while the group is still in Harad gathering en masse.

I think it's time to come up with a name for this herb. If we come up with the English version, I can translate it into Sindarin (or if anyone else has Sindarin skills ...).

*On behalf of Ayla*

Sounds good to me. I didn't mean that I wanted Ayla to find the cure, just that she would be around to help and locate more of it or what ever we come up with. That's all :)

I'm about to hurry off and do some final preparation for my last exam but I just thought I'd post briefly just to say that everyone's ideas are really wonderful. And that I love how you've brought it all together Heather! We're possibly going to need a small group to head off to Harad to retrieve the cure, but obviously there will also need to be many remaining in Gondor to tend to the sick. Aragorn will be among the group venturing out I would assume, but who else would be?

I'm not sure if Aragorn will go to Harad or not. It depends on how many other volunteers we have. He's a good Healer, so he might want to stay in Minas Tirith for that reason. He would also be a King in hostile territory.

Are there any volunteers to go to Harad once the cure is discovered? So far we have Cirion. Anyone else?

I think Pippin wouldn't mind tagging along... I would just need to find a way to direct him to Minas Tirith before it happens. :)
