I like Thûl-in-Gyrth best also.

Thûl-in-Gyrth it is! Thank you for your opinions.

That's a very good question, Andrea. The stages of the disease mesh together and overlap a little. Transitions into the stages can be as abrupt or gradual as you want them to be. By Day 16 or 17, the patient should not be waking. I did picture it as death coming while they're asleep.

I'll have something typed up as a guide tomorrow or Tuesday. In the mean time, can I get a volunteer to post a brief (or lengthy, if you want) one-shot about the rats being released inside Minas Tirith? This should be a servant of the Hand of Sauron probably :hehe:

Just a quick question (I give everything my of approval thus far!), which races will the illness effect? Are we talking about just Mankind or Hobbits and Dwarves as well? Also do Elves even get sick?

Personally, I think it would be very good if Men, Dwarves, and Hobbits contracted the illness as it would make the illness, Thûl-in-Gyrth, that more terrifying.

I think Elves can get sick. I'm trying to remember where I read that they can die in battle or of an illness. Their immune systems are probably much stronger. But yes, all mortal races can get infected. I'd say it's up to the Elf's handler on if or when they get sick.

Maybe Elves can get sick from it, but it just takes longer for the stages to progress?

I know this is a bit late, but it took me a while to find stuff on Elves and sickness, and ultimately I can say that sources are pretty conflicting. Some sites say no and some say yes. Here is the best summary that I was able to find:

Quote:

5. Sickness and infection. This is a bone of contention within the realm of Tolkien discussion. It is true that they cannot die from illness. That is part of the Doom of Mandos. "No sickness may assail you." The controversy comes over the choice of words Tolkien used. 'Assail' specifically means 'to attack violently' or 'to assault'. It comes down to whether or not this was meant to mean only they could not die from sickness or if they could not become sick at all. We never see an Elf catch a cold or come down with pneumonia, but we don't hear about any of the Men in his tales contracting the flu. You can look at it as sickness is such a minor worry that Tolkien didn't ever bother to write about it (I mean, who really cares if Boromir caught yellow fever as a tyke or if Elladan was laid out with the measles for three weeks as a child?), or you can look at it as sickness was a part of life for Men and not for Elves. It's a matter of personal interpretation at this point.

You also have to decide, if the Elves do get sick, is it only the Noldor who don't as part of the Doom or if all Elves fall under the sickness rule.

So, although it does sound like it can go either way based on your interpretation, I'm either betting on the "can't get sick at all" or the "can get sick, but cannot die from it," Simply because it seems to be that sickness is very much a mortal curse. And ironically enough I have a cold right now, har har.

And although this isn't strictly to do with the Plague Plot, I found this to be interesting and partially relevant:

Quote:

6. Finally, we have the question of poison. We know that Celebrían was sick from her poisoned wound, and that Aredhel died of hers, but we don't know about ingested poison or topical poison or inhaled poison. There was herbal knowledge all throughout the tales, of which plants you could eat, which ones you could smoke, which ones, when ingested, could cure an ailment, so it isn't beyond the knowledge of the races of Middle-earth that one could give a known poisonous plant to someone to eat and that there would be ill effects. It's just never shown if anyone did this. This is yet another area you need to make your own call. My opinion is that a toxin, no matter its mode of delivery, is going to have the same effect on an Elf, but can't say it for absolute fact because we simply don't know.

All this came from a lovely discovery I made at a site called "Crystal Clear Tolkien" and if you want to read the entire piece from where I got both of these quotes, you can check it out here. The entire thing is actually an answer to the question: What are the ways Elves can and cannot die? It makes for interesting reading at the very least.

Oh, wow. That's great research. I'll make a small amendment to the announcement. Thank you so much, Julie!

I'd like to try and figure out how Gwenneth can help out or interact with some of the MP threads.

she is a very optimistic (and almost naively so) type of person. She honestly doesn't have a cruel bone in her body and I doubt would even wish ill againt her mortal enemy if she had one. She's young, inexperienced in a lot of things and will be soon leaving Gondor more frequently than she has ever before. With the option of play outside of Gondor approaching I'd thought I'd post here to discuss with any ideas and at least get my interest out there in case somene else had idea's on how to participate.

She's not a lot of trouble but brave enough to step into some if need be to help someone out. She's training to be a healer but there seems to be a few of those out there already so I was thinking a different angle other than helping out in the houses of healing.

It seems only right that my first post should be in this thread!

Firstly I just want to say that this truly is an impressive site - very inclusive and active and well-set up - and for all of those reasons, I was very keen to make a character and throw her into the thick of things. So here's my character in a nutshell;

Díorë is a simple girl from the Riddermark. She's been raised on a farm her entire life and it was there she discovered her passion for herbs and their uses. As is common for her people, Díorë is headstrong and brash. She is also very hard-working and dependable, as well as being a young woman of high spirits with an unwavering hope in people.

So, currently she's making a move from Rohan to Gondor to aid her uncle in the House of Healing. This might enable her to befriend wanderers on her way, or people in either land - Gondor or Rohan. As Díorë had an immense faith in people she'd make friends easily but would also be easily manipulated. The idea of her unknowingly helping the HoS is also plausable.

I should probably also mention that whilst she does have many skills - knowing when to harvest crops, horseback riding and of course, healing - her defensive abilites are rather limited, so unless someone decided to train her, which would be unlikely, she wouldn't really be incorporated directly into any physical fighting.

Mandy - I've already put in my two cents about how Gwenneth can get involved, but that's obviously in the future still. (Although a nearer future now). I'd be more than happy to have her play that part, if you'd still like. There's some room for Hand of Sauron's servants to post with Gwenneth then too.

Em - Welcome to the MP! Right now, Thul-in-Gyrth is our main focus, and since Diore is a Healer, that works out perfectly. We need someone to find the cure (but not for awhile - we still have a lot of plots to do with this :p ). Would you be interested in having Diore part of this plot? It would involve her doing some research, mixing up potions, and maybe even some false hope?

That's what I've got at the moment. Like we've been talking about in the C-Box, we're all pretty beat this time of year.
