Main Plot: 6 Fourth Age; Get Involved!

Some RPGs like to hide the main plot from their members and give no clues at all. Others restrict who can be involved in the main plot. I've been on both kinds of boards (and was even an Admin there). That's not going to happen at Realm of Arda. Our main plot will be out there for the whole world to see. More importantly, it will be out there for every single member to be a part of.

Before posting in this thread, please read both of the following topics: Main Plot Summary and The Plot & Your Character.

After you're familiar with both of those topics, make a post here and talk about how you think your character will respond to the growing menace of the Hand of Sauron and the tension in the West. If you need to interact with another character, ask politely and see what happens.

I thought I'd kick this off since Hand of Sauron is the ultimate bad guy. Since he's starting all the problems, most characters will react to him somehow.

The Hand of Sauron's goal is to make the West turn on itself. He's hoping more for a collapse of power than a civil war, but he'll take whatever outcome he can get. First, he wants to bring down Elessar and Gondor (and by extension Arnor), then he'll turn his sights on Rohan.

At the same time, Hand of Sauron is actually more worried about himself. The power of Sauron that was keeping him eternally young is gone now that Barad-dur is broken. He's just a man, and although long-lived, should have died about 2500 years ago. The last of his magic was used to spread a darkness through Middle-earth. For more information, see "The Awakening" in Mount Doom. He's desperately searching for any magic that can make him immortal. He's particularly interested in anyone who was in contact with the Wizards.

The places he is concentrating his efforts on are: Isengard/Fangorn (Saruman), Eryn Lasgalen (Radagast), and Harad (Blue Wizards). But, of course, Gandalf traveled everywhere, so the Hand of Sauron is going all over Middle-earth too.

So pick your side. If you need to interact with the Hand of Sauron either to join his cause or strengthen your resolve to fight him, I'm available for that. Post and let's plot!

I'm still not entirely sure where Aydin fits into this plot. (Which is sad considering that I wrote it). But reading through it again, I think I might have an idea.

In one of his letters, Tolkien said that Blue Wizards (Alatar and Pallando) went to the South where there formed cults to study their magic. Possibly, Aydin has come into contact with one or both of the Wizards. Or maybe someone else in the House of Maati.

Aydin is too devoted to put much faith in anyone who abandoned their mission. He would not like the Blue Wizards. When the Hand of Sauron comes to Harad looking for their followers, Aydin would clearly not be among them. Actually, he would be very much opposed to the Hand of Sauron.

I don't know exactly where to go from here, except that he is a "good" Southron. Maybe I'll have another thought later. *crosses fingers*

Well, there seem to be at least a couple of ways to get Legolas into the main plot here. If the Hand of Sauron is interested in people who were in close contact with one of the Istari, both Legolas and Gimli are in Ithilien, but I'm not sure what the HoS would achieve by speaking with Legolas, given that as an Elf, and as one of the Nine Walkers he's doubly unlikely to lend him any support. Or perhaps he might have an interest in the colony of Ithilien anyway, given that they are so close to Minas Morgul and all of that.

If HoS is interested in Eryn Lasgalen, it would be easy enough to involve Legolas that way as I'd imagine that he'd be there from time to time given that his ties there run quite deep. If Radagast frequented that area quite often Legolas would definitely have information on him that would probably interest HoS.

Aydin: With regards to the Blue Wizards, would Aydin possess knowledge of what their mission in ME was/is? My Tolkien lore is a bit rusty, but wasn't their true mission quite secretive?

I agree, the Hand of Sauron wouldn't even consider Legolas as a possible ally. None of the Fellowship would be. I do like your suggestion about the Morgul Vale. Hand of Sauron was "friends" with the Witch-king, who obviously had some power of his own. He would go poking around the Morgul Vale.

We can go a couple of places with that. He can come into South Ithilien to see how much of the forest the Elves have healed. Or Legolas might be tracking a party of Uruk-hai East? Hand of Sauron, at this point, has a band of Uruk-hai "bodyguards."

They could meet, talk, and obviously not like each other. Legolas would probably report back to Aragorn about who he met, right? Maybe that's how the Captains of the West begin to suspect that the Lieutenant of Barad-dur rumor is actually true?

I like the tracking idea very much. I can probably get a thread set up for today or tomorrow. =)

Ah, yeah, you are right about their mission. I completely forgot that.

Okay, I'll make Aydin wary of magic in general. Anything that can't be explained is dangerous in his eyes. Also, it's an unfair fight with magic, and he doesn't like that ever. I figure they must have used magic openly if cults sprung up.

On the Hand of Sauron -- I'll reply whenever you get it started :D

I thought it was about time to post here as Aragorn. I'm pretty certain how he'll play a part in the story.

He is a good man, so the darkness spreading from Mordor hasn't touched him yet. When he hears that the rumors are true, the soldiers of Gondor and Arnor will be given orders to find and detain the Hand of Sauron. In this instance, I think Aragorn will also kick into Ranger mode and go looking himself.

I'm willing to play it by ear with regards to what everyone else wants to do with the plot. Aragorn will, naturally, be Hand of Sauron's enemy. Any order, missive, meeting, letter, etc. that you need from Aragorn is mine to give. Just post here or send me a PM.

Haeleana in this war would definitely want to be a part of it despite being a woman, the same problem Eowyn face in Two Towers and Return of the King. Of course Healeana has an excuse to help fight the Hand of Sauron because she can be the healer. A travelling dunedain who heals the mean. Of course I can't promise that Haeleana won't at least try to fight. She's a good fighter in defence but she hasn't any experience in actualy attack, naturally because she is a woman but she will probably try to help in some way or the other.

Celarwen is more likely to get in the way or fall victim to the Hand of Sauron but not death of course. She isn't completely useless, once her father gets wind of the threat he could teach her how to use a bow and arrow. He probably wouldn't teach her sword fighting because he sees no reason why she should but he might give her a dagger to keep in case of emergency. But she goes everywhere by horse anyway. She definitely isn't going to be keeping to just Minas Tirith. She'll probably end up getting into more trouble

Haeleana - I really like the idea of a travelling Healer! The Healers in Gondor are not as good as the Dunedain, particularly not outside of Minas Tirith. There will definitely be a need for this as Orc attacks increase. Is there some specific thing/event you'd like to involve her in?

Celarwen - Getting into more trouble? She sounds like the perfect catalyst for something. The Hand of Sauron has a preference for beautiful young ladies. He would not kill her unless she tried to kill him first. What do you think about the Hand of Sauron using her for something sinister? I was thinking along the lines of a kidnapping/ransom situation. Unless you prefer something darker with a bit of black magic ... He doesn't have much raw power left, but he knows a few nasty tricks still.
