Royal Missive

To royals and rulers of Middle-earth:

A mortal sickness has struck Gondor. The first case was reported this Sunday last. Within three days twenty-seven more had contradicted the illness. Our Houses of Healing are now overcrowded with three hundred and twenty-five cases. It has been three weeks since the first case. Word of the same sickness has reached us from Dol Amroth, Emyn Arnen, Cair Andros, and Pelargir.

Thûl-in-Gyrth our Healers have named it. We write to you now after receiving a report from the Head Healer that the first patient fell silent five days ago and has died this morning. The sickness spread through Gondor at a frightening pace. We fear it has already moved beyond our borders.

There is no cure as of yet. We will write again when our Healers are successful.

Signed with friendship,
Elessar, High-King of Gondor and Arnor

OOC

What is the disease called?

Thûl-in-Gyrth (Breath of the Dead)

What are the symptoms?

It is not particularly gruesome or painful, but it is lethal. Use the chart below as a guide to the progression of the illness. The stages can be as abrupt or gradual as you like. However, by Day 16 or 17, the patient should not be waking. Death comes in sleep.

- Contact: Blood-born pathogen
- Day 3 or 4: Extreme fatigue
- Day 6 or 7: Dangerous fever, delirium
- Day 14 or 15: Unconsciousness
- Day 20 or 21: Death

Which races can get sick?

Humans and Hobbits are most susceptible. Dwarves have a tougher physiology, but will also become sick. It is up to the handlers of Elves whether they want their character to become sick or not. Please read the this post before making a decision.

Who is immune?

Anyone who has been in Harad for a significant period of time will most likely be immune. Additionally, servants of the Hand of Sauron have a supply of antidote.

How is the disease spread?

It is a blood-born pathogen carried by rats, which are in turn infested with fleas and parasites. Some common ways of contracting the disease are: contact with a rat, insect bites, eating contaminated food, drinking contaminated water, sharing bodily fluid (including sweat and salvia) with an infected person, eating food an infected person prepared.

How fast does the disease spread?

In a city the size of Minas Tirith, it is an epidemic within two weeks. Travel will spread the disease to other cities within a month.

Does my character have to get sick?

No, they don’t. If every character on the board falls into a coma and dies, we’re in a sticky situation. We do, however, need some characters to become ill. Use your best judgment. If your character has never been to Harad and is not a servant of the Hand of Sauron, chances are they are not immune and will be exposed to the disease.

So, my character is sick. Do I just not post?

Please keep posting! Even after your character falls into unconsciousness, you can continue posting. Studies show that comatose patients still have brain functions. This stage of the disease was left open to interpretation. Your character might dream, have nightmares, reflect on their life, or something else unexpected might happen. Before this stage, there are plenty of possibilities for a character in a delirium.

Can my character die from this?

Yes, absolutely. NPCs will be dying left and right, but created characters can meet their end from this disease too.

What is the cure of this disease?

That is something the Healers get to decide In Character. The disease is a bacteria, therefore, it can be treated. I encourage the Healers not to rely on athelas or a simple herb. The cure for such a serious disease will be a complicated regiment, not a one-time dose. Before declaring that you have found a cure, please send a PM to Heather or Fran.
