Age of Arda: Third
Year: 3018 -- 10 years ago (movie-verse timeline)
Location: Party Field, Hobbiton

Mr. Bilbo Baggins was turning 111 today and the Shire was in an uproar about it. There was to be a party, which everyone seemed to be going to whether they’d been invited or not. For those Hobbits living in Hobbiton, the decoration of the Party Field was a gradual development that had caused gossip for weeks. But to the Hobbits, like Milo Brandybuck, who lived farther away, it was a special treat that lived up to all the rumors.

They said dwarves had been here, bringing in supplies. Milo believed it too. There had never been any party like this in the Shire before. The lights strung into the trees, pavilion top, and streaming banners were beyond what any Hobbit might have expected. And Gandalf was here, too, with fireworks. To top it all off, there was enough good food and ale to feed the whole Shire twice over for a week.

“Happy Birthday, Bilbo!” Milo exclaimed, as he caught a glimpse of the old Hobbit. All Bilbo could do was wave in response before they were separated in the crowd.

Milo had already received his birthday present from Bilbo. It was a bit of mathom for Bilbo, a dwarven map of the Blue Mountains, but a treasure to Milo. It would take him ages to translate all the rune markings on the parchment, but Milo was eager for the task. He loved old maps, and dwarf places, or any place outside the Shire really, were foreign to Milo. The map was tucked safely in his house, far away in Bucklebury.

“A half-pint, if you please,” Milo said cheerily, peering over a barrel of the Gaffer’s brew. “This is just what I need after a long trip from Buckland.”

Bouncing along to the lively music, mug of ale in one hand and slice of cake as large as his head in the other, Milo found a table with some of the Bolgers, Hornblowers, and Proudfoots. He was related to several of them, and friends with many more.

“Isn’t it wonderful being a Hobbit?” he asked, laughter his voice and a smile on his face. “I can’t imagine anyone else in Middle-earth has ever seen such a grand party.”

OOC: mathom – bits of “junk” Hobbits collect. They usually give it to party guests on their birthday, according to Hobbit customs
