Playable Races/Species

This is a list of all the types of characters playable on Realm of Arda. (And a very small list of characters not available for play).

Playable Races

Human
Elf
Dwarf
Hobbit
Maiar1

Playable Creatures2

Balrog
Cold-drake
Dragon
Eagle
Ent
Giant
Huorn
Orc (Goblin)
Troll
Uruk-hai
Vampire
Warg
Watcher in the Water
Werewolf
Wight
Wraith3

1 These characters are permitted on a very select case-by-case basis.
2 What we call “creature” characters sometimes have a difficult time finding threads because posting with these creatures might mean risking a character’s life and limbs. The successful creature character is aligned with the Dark or Light. They have instant “allies” to post with.
See the Bestiary for descriptions. Tolkien’s version of these creatures is not always the same as modern understandings.

3 Not Ringwraiths (Nazgul). Anything Sauron corrupted ended when he was destroyed. This includes the Ringwraiths and anyone they turned into a wraith. The Wraiths on this board were turned by something else not connected to a Ring of Power.

Valar – These characters are observers. They do not interact in Middle-earth except in extraordinary cases. Therefore, there is very little for them to do.

Istari (Wizards) – In canon, the Wizards were supposed to depart Middle-earth at the end of the Third Age. We choose to believe that they did so.

Canons not on the Canon List – Canons were left off the list because they are deceased or have left Middle-earth. In some cases, their departure was not explicitly stated, but it has been reasonably inferred by the Admins. If you have questions about a specific character, we would be happy to justify our decision to not include them or to admit our error and add them to the list.

Half-Elf – Romances and relationships between the races were extremely rare. To allow originals with this background would diminish the history and value Tolkien created for these characters. If you want to play a Half-Elf, please check the canon list to see if Arwen, Elladan, or Elrohir is open.

Children/Underage Characters – We do not accept children or underage characters because they have a difficult time finding a place in our plot. You’re welcome to NPC younger aged characters until they are old enough to join. The heroes of Middle-earth were almost all around middle age or elderly, so don’t be afraid to make your character a little older than normal. In Middle-earth, being older is a really good thing.
