OOC: I am sorry about the quality, I hope when I get a feel for him it will improve.

IC.

The sun had begun o set over the part of middle earth named the Shire by it's inhabitants. It was a strange time when the day had not yet ended and the night had not quite begun but the dying sunlight illuminated the barley crops of the Northern Farthing all the same not much went on in the Shire and in the Northern Farthing even less so but a new face had arrived all the same on a hunt for a new home and long lost friends.

Tallwood admired the beauty of the Shire, though he off course preferred the lush green forest that was Fangorn, and he had been told his mother would of loved such a place, as well as all of the other Entwives. He stood atop a large hill that overlooked the land in all of it's beauty. There were few Trees in the Northern Farthing and due to this he stuck out like a sore thumb.

"Hmmm." He shook his shoulders causing his entire 37ft frame to shake as a result four small bird flew from his head due to this and went of into opposite directions. He wondered how long his task would take with a heavy burden on his mind he began to walk even higher up the rocky hill. As he spoke deep and strange noises came from his mouth as he kept in touch with the few trees nearby, the presence of an Ent was always welcoming to his brothers who needed protection.

His steps were slow and graceful however he made great distance with each bound and so travelled far quicker than most men or Elves. Due to the dense population of the North he had not been seen, to his knowledge at least, by any one and he rather liked it that way. As the setting sun hit him his shadow was cast across the many fields of the Shire.

Milo extinguished the candle at his work station and rose from the stool. Stretching his sore shoulder muscles and cramped fingers, he took his coat from a peg by the door and exited the small library. The North-Tooks had been correct. This little village had quite the collection on herblore.

It was not quite time for supper yet, so Milo turned away from the smial where he was staying with the Hornblowers and headed for the crags where he liked to stroll in the evening. It was a painful task, sometimes, being a Scribe. It was his pleasure to serve the King of Gondor, but he was accustomed to travelling for his cartography work. He liked the open country and the silence.

Movement from the corner of his sight caught his attention. Milo’s eyes followed the swift gait of something decidedly not Hobbit approaching. He hesitated, calculating the possibilities and the risks. He was very far in the North where wolves and worse had been known to cross the border. There was not time to go back to the small village for help, so he did the only thing he could think to do.

From the cover of the wild thyme bushes and dense clover, Milo watched the strange creature in disbelief. It was a maple tree … and it was moving. Being a Brandybuck, it wasn’t unknown to him that the trees in the Old Forest moved. But this tree was walking, and that was something the Old Forest did not do.

It was one of the Tree-men! It must be. Hobbits had been claiming to see them for years, but they were rarely believed. Even Milo had doubted if they really existed. Trembling from head to toe, he slowly rose from his hiding place.

“Erm … hello?” He didn’t know if he had spoken loud enough. The Tree-man was awfully tall. Did Tree-men even have ears? What did one say when meeting a walking Tree for the first time anyway? He cleared his throat. “I’m Milo Brandybuck. Erm … Welcome to the Shire.”

It was a strange feeling for an Ent to be away from home, it was not uncommon and quite usual for an Ent to spend his entire life in the deep confines of what remained of the Great Forest of Fangron, it was in their blood to seek out trees and protect them but when you are surrounded by giant and beautiful trees no Ent needed to leave the Forest. But since his trees had been burned and cut down to make weapons of mass destruction he had not felt completely at home in Fangorn.

On his left hand side was what appeared to be a satchel made of some odd material. It was huge and measured four foot across and was full to the brim with Maple Tree seeds. He would one day plant them and live among them once more, but this time no harm would ever come to them as long as he lived with them.

He wondered what creatures lived in the land he now stood. He thought back to when he was an Entling and the song he was taught.
" Learn now the lore of Living Creatures!
First name the four, the free peoples:
Eldest of all, the elf-children;
Dwarf the delver, dark are his houses;
Ent the earthborn, old as mountains;
Man the mortal, master of horses:

Beaver the builder, buck the leaper,
Bear bee-hunter, boar the fighter;
Hound is hungry, hare is fearful...

Eagle in eyrie, ox in pasture,
Hart horn-crownéd; hawk is swiftest,
Swan the whitest, serpent coldest...."
He sang slowly almost hypnotic however his voice was loud and travelled far into the hills.

Tallwood reached toward his shoulder and picked up the satchel, making sure not one of the precious seeds spilled onto the floor, be turned around to place it on the floor when he saw a most peculiar being. He had never seen such a creature he certainly resembled a Man but he was far shorter than any he had ever seen.

He listened as he spoke he wondered if the stories of the miniature men who had met Fangorn where true, he had thought it a myth but now it seemed one was standing at his feet. 'What were the called...Hobbits, ahh yes that was their name, Hobbits.' He thought before he turned to the Hobbit.

A smile crossed the Ents mouth. "Ah, A HOBBIT." His voice boomed down toward the small being. " Mi-lo, What a strange name, Mi-lo. Delightful, Humm. I am Tallwood, shepard of the Maple Trees." He looked around. "Shire, yes I have heard that name before." He remembered why he had came here after being distracted by the Hobbit. "Master Mi-lo, May I ask you a question. Have you seen others of my kind here?"

The Credit for the song goes to J.R.R. Tolkein.

The Shire,” Milo corrected, suddenly very bold. “And I should say that Tall-wood is an equally strange name. Nevertheless, it is a pleasure to meet you.”

The Hobbit laughed, caught up in the absurdity of speaking to a tree who spoke back to him. Of all the strange creatures in Middle-earth, Tree-men were perhaps the strangest to Milo. Yet, the idea of tree shepherds appealed to his Hobbit sense. Nature ought to have something looking out for it.

“Others of your kind?” Milo’s brow furrowed, and he thought very seriously. “Well, that’s hard to say for sure. There have been stories told of other Tree-men around these parts. But whether they were actually seen or made up by storytellers hoping to impress, I’m not sure.”

The longer he was in the presence of the Tree-man, the more comfortable Milo felt. It should not have been this way. The Tree-man was frightfully tall and fast, but the Hobbit had the sense he would not be harmed.

“I know of other trees able to move, though not like you do. In the Old Forest, the trees change their path and lure travelers to their doom. It’s a treacherous place, but the Brandybucks go in there sometimes. I have been once or twice. I did not see any Tree-men there.”

It occurred to Milo that, maybe, the trees turned dark because there were no good Tree-men to herd them. His ancestors burning the forest had certainly not helped, but he did not think the trees would have attacked in the first place if they’d had a shepherd looking over them.

Tallwood did not understand what was so important with the word The. He wondered if the word meant something else to the Hobbits than to the other races as he could not grasp why it meant so much to them. He furrowed his bushy brow of moss before he replied. "Tallwood is a perfect name. Am I not Tall and Wood." He laughed as he spoke. "And a pleasure it is to meet you."

Tallwood wondered if the Hobbit felt uneasy by his size but when Milo began to laugh his worries were washed away and he began to settle.

He listened and began to hope the Hobbit had seen an Ent or even an Entwife in The Shire. If he had maybe he could take the news to Fangorn and the Song the Elves sing of the reuniting of the Ents and their wives would finally come true.

Tallwood listened to the Hobbits description of the moving trees of the forest, he wondered if he would be allowed to visit them. His description matched that of The Huorons, especially the part about tricking two legs which they were known to do if they did not have an Ent with them. "Master Milo. I think these trees may have once been Ents who have became tree-ish. Or Trees who have become Ent-ish. We guide them and protect them, and two legs who wonder in their path. They can be tricksters but If you take me to them maybe I can talk to them for you."

He began to wonder if he could one day plant his seeds with the Trees of The Shire. Maybe one day even settle down with them and live near The Shire, especially if the people were as welcoming and kind as Milo appeared to be. Though they may not want an Ent among them.

“Why, yes, it does make sense. But so does mine. My right name is Milamac, and if you were a Hobbit, you would know I was a Brandybuck because …” Milo trailed off, now seeing that his name was not quite as sensible as he’d previously thought. “Eh, I do believe you’ve won this point, Tallwood.”

Ent! Milo nearly fell over when he heard the word. Of course, of course! Outside of the Shire, Tree-men must be called Ents. The name was familiar to him because of stories he’d heard Merry share. Or more accurately, stories shared by Merry and repeated by other Hobbits at the Golden Perch.

“Tallwood,” Milo said, waving his hands around in excitement, “Forgive me, but … I’ve just made a connection between Tree-men and Ents that had previously escaped me. I’m sure you will be very welcome in the Old Forest.”

Milo was calculating how long it would take him to send word back to Brandy Hall that an Ent was coming. He was also trying to work out when Merry and Pippin were due back in the Shire. Surely, they would want to speak with Tallwood.

“The Old Forest isn’t rightly governed by Hobbits. It’s outside the borders of the Shire, but the quickest path there leads through Buckland. The Master of Buckland is my cousin, and he is a friend of Ents. Have you heard of –let’s see, what was his name?—oh, right, Treebeard?”

"I was unaware we were in a competition, little one. However strange your name must seem to me it does have a poetic tone to it." When he was back in Fangorn he would never of thought that he would ever be discussing names with a Hobbit, however he could not control his destiny.

Hobbits are funny little thing...They are so small but seem large in heart, like my friend Redwood. He had gazed of into the distance looking at the setting sun as it fell behind the hills of The Shire. He loved this time of day back in his home land will the sun cast shadows of the trees.

Tallwood looked back at his little friend as he seemed to thrash about his hands waving in the air. "Hmmmm. Maybe by The Hobbits but not by the Trees. After all if they have had their way for so long they may not want a Shepard to keep them in check."

" Hooom. Well I would be proud if the Hobbits would look after the forest, she needs to be cared for even the trees that do not move need someone to talk to now and again. Though I fear they may go back to their old way's when I leave this place."

He listened to Milo as he spoke about the old forest. He smiled when he heard the old Ent's name. "Ahhh, Treebeard. The wisest and oldest of all creatures of middle earth. Dear Milo, I do not only know him I count him as one of my dearest friends."

“No, I suppose we weren’t in a competition. It’s just the way of some Hobbits to always banter as if it were a contest.”

Milo laughed again. By “some Hobbits” he meant himself, but it was true that others were like him. Every word was a friendly game of I’m-right-you’re-wrong. This was especially true between the adventurous Hobbits and those who would rather remain within the Shire forever.

“It may be that the trees don’t want a shepherd, but as I hear it, they do have a minder within the Old Forest. He’s sometimes absent, but they listen when he is around.” Milo frowned a little. “Oh, don’t talk of leaving when you’ve just arrived! My land might be quaint, but there is a lot of nature to see here.”

Milo was glad to have gotten Treebeard’s name right, and also a little surprised that Tallwood was a close friend. The odds of finding a friend-of-a-friend was rare in the Shire (most Hobbits knew everyone), but having that friend-of-a-friend be an Ent from so far away was almost unfathomable.

“Well, then, you should stop at Brandy Hall and the Great Smials to see Merry and Pippin … if you have time, of course.”

Milo flushed a little, feeling very unsure about ordering around a Tree-man some thirty-five feet taller than him. It must have looked bizarre just the two of them speaking, much less the smaller one directing the taller.

As he listened and spoke to Milo he saw the Hobbits as a strange people but not to different from the Men he had met, although they did seem to be less suspicious of a 37ft tree when one walks into their land uninvited, and he wanted to meet more of them.

" Hobbits are a curious people, maybe I could meet more of them one day, how many of them are there left ?" If you were not an Ent this might seem a strange question, but his was a fading race and the population of the Ents was always an important subject.

" Hmmm a Minder you say? What is he? I can think of but one race a Tree would listen to apart from an Ent and they are they Elves. And most of them have now left this land for good, it is sad we owe the Elves much." It was true the Elves mourned the passing of the Elves. " I would like to meet this...minder. He sounds interesting."

He was happy Milo did not want him to leave just yet. " I may stay, until at the very least I have met the minder person." The sun had almost completely set and it would now be considered night in Fangorn he wondered what his Kin were doing.

He closed his eyes as he thought, those names were familiar. "Ahh Haa. These people you speak off, they are the Hobbits who visited Fangorn. Yes, yes I think I will see them." He crouched down as far as an Ent could, which was not very far, and placed his hand on the ground. "Would you show me the way to the old forest, Milo."

He wondered if Milo would be ok with traveling on him, as many were afraid of such heights.

“Left?”

Milo’s brow furrowed. He didn’t understand the question at first. Even when he did, he found it a very odd thing to ask. Wasn’t it always the case that there were more births than deaths? What a sad situation it would be for that ever to not be true.

“Oh! Well, Tallwood, the Hobbit population can’t be described that way. You see, there are more of us every year. We have more children than elderly.”

Again, Milo was presented with a question he could not answer. Faltering slightly, he stammered a response.

“I … I don’t know. The minder, he’s only a myth, really. Or, well, not a myth so much anymore but … Actually, Tallwood, even the people who know him can’t describe him very well. And I’ve only heard that particular tale second hand. I’m sure it was quite jumbled from the original version.”

Finally, after a string of requests he couldn’t properly answer, Milo beamed up at Tallwood. With a little swagger in his movements, the Hobbit made a flourished bow.

“It so happens that you’ve found just the person to take you to the Old Forest. I am, in fact, a cartographer. It’s my own opinion that I know the Shire as well as any Hobbit, and much better than some. But I do have business here in the North Farthing, and I’m afraid the journey to the Old Forest will take several days at least.”
