As they waited, the children talked eagerly about what they were going to ask the celebrities they watch on television and listen to on the radio at a mayoral event in Forida recently.

A host of motivational speakers and entertainers, including R&B star Chris Brown, rapper Webbie, basketball star Dwight Howard and actress Raven-Symone, were slated to keep the students bouncing out of their seats.

"I'm so used to seeing their television and music sides," said Kailen Barra, 11, who lives in Gentilly, during lunch. "I'm interested to see their personal side, hearing what they think about stuff."

The "stuff" the pig-tailed Kailen had in mind included politics and global warming, and she said she hoped to quiz Raven-Symone, 22, about her experience growing up on television and in the limelight.

But by midday, when the stars were supposed to shine, the room remained mostly dark. Most of the celebrities failed to show. Raven-Symone, who played precocious Olivia on "The Cosby Show" and is now one of the Disney Channel's 'tween favorites, was an exception.

Nearly 100 students were invited. More than 35 of the children, from the Boys and Girls Club of Eatonville, Fla., rode a bus 11 hours to take part in the 'celebrity filled' festivities as part of the mayors conference.

Despite the stars' absences, the Florida children seemed pretty satisfied with the rest of the deal.

"I was pumped to get some crawfish while I was here," said Jayson Patrick, 16.

His friend Rashid Bradley, 14, mentioned they visited local universities and toured the city.

"We learned a lot about college and education and how to live our lives right," he said.

But no, she really didn't show up, lol. That's what the whole story is about, the kids had fun despite the no-show of requested celebs.
