Keeping the tray tucked under his arm, Jase smiled at the two and collected their money, nodding a thanks to them both and a lopsided hint of a grin to Charlie for the tip. He pulled back out the exact change that would come from a number eight for the girl and handed it to her and then spun away from them and dodged tables on the way back to the kitchen.

He dropped the tray on the counter when he was out of the eye of the dining room and quickly placed the order for the two number eights before drifting to the far end of the kitchen and grasping the edge of one of the oversized sinks. Jase clutched at the ceramic rim and shut his eyes against the headache that was creeping into his system and behind his eyes.

He figured his little brother was home from his work by now -- and his own twin sister was on her way to her job. Only a few more hours till he was able to go home himself and pass out.

Folding the crisp dollar bills, Elizabeth slipped them into her pocket with a handful of coins. Falling into the nearby table, she looked up at Charlie, who was still standing on his weary feet.

As she drew her attention to the window, she saw Delta lying on the walkway outside. He almost appeared in a trance, moving his head only to silently watch the occasional Johnny and Janey Citizen walk by. Elizabeth shot back to Charlie with an inviting smile.

"Care to join me for lunch? Or do you have other plans?" Elizabeth inquired.

"Lizzie," he smiled, testing the name on his tongue. "Nice to meet you. It would be a pleasure to join you."

Charlie slid into an empty chair and stifled a yawn. It had been one hell of a day. He liked the sudden turn of events it had taken, though. He could count the number of dinners he'd had without a fellow scientist or benefactor since he'd been to Rapture on one hand. And the number of dinners taken with pretty ladies was even less.

"I take it that's your dog?" he asked, following her gaze toward the windows.

It took all of Arthur's willpower not to bound in through the entrance like a little kid. He figured Evelyn would follow him up to the front where he was weaving his way through tables to the counter along the kitchen. He pulled himself onto a stool and slammed his palms on the countertop, smiling at Jase as the man walked by.

Soloman was probably seriously sick of seeing his mug around this place. Seriously.

Spinning on the stool, he shot Evelyn a big smile and patted the seat next to him. On the empty stool on his other side, he set his messenger bag down. The first aids kits shuffled around noisily and Arthur told himself to be careful with his baggage. He needed those if he wanted his throat to get better.

"Mmmhmmm" Lizzie nodded, smiling with her big blue eyes. "That's Delta! He's the closest friend I have down here." Looking back down at the table, she slipped her fork out of her folded napkin, and began running her fingers along it's teeth.

"About, oh, six years ago, I had a job working at a train station. Ticket sales, departure times, arrival times. You name it, I had to cover it. Well, one night after my shift I was walking home - it was late November," Elizabeth gave pause to recall. "But even for November it was cold."

She turned sideways in her seat as she began to look back out the window. "I took a shortcut through the park, and there he was - a man - looked like he had been out for a few days. His pale body slumped over the park bench. In his hand was some sort of bottle. He was dead." The young girl began to shake her head as she pushed those last three words out. Something in her voice had changed.

"Underneath the bench was a cardboard box with a blanket over it. I figured it would be some liquor or old rags, but nothing could of prepared me for what was inside. It was five puppies, four of them frozen in the cold. But one still clung to life. I took him home with me. One of my dad's close friends was a veterinarian, he told us Delta was severely malnourished and as a result growth was stunted in his left back leg, and the limping would never go away."

As Elizabeth settled the fork back down on the table, she poked up from the seat to see if the food her and Charlie had ordered was on its way out. Going back to her story, she refocused.

"The - the man on the bench...he was homeless. Drank himself unconscious and froze up in the cold. The puppies must of been his, maybe he was planning on selling them...we'll never know. I can't remember anything about the man's appearance - maybe out of pure trauma I've blocked it out. The only thing I do remember were two tattoos on each of his wrists. At first I thought they were two triangles, but then I had realized they were actually Greek letters", Elizabeth looked ready to make a reveal, "Delta."

She motioned her fine hands at the sleeping canine. Her voice began to pick back up, and it was once again full of life and vigor. "We've been inseparable ever since!"

Evie couldn't help but be amused by Arthur's enthusiasm for Happy Noodle. His sudden change in mood as he bounded through the front door was infectious and she suddenly found herself grinning right back at him. Settling herself on the barstool, she turned to face him.

"I take it you like Happy Noodle? Just a little bit?"

She hardly paused before launching into her next thought.

"Wait, wait, don't answer that. At least vocally. You are supposed to be resting that throat of yours. Maybe we should have hand signals or you could just nod or something."

Charlie watched as Lizzie regaled Delta's tale and noticed the deep emotions behind her words. He couldn't help but return her smile with one of his own.

"Delta. It's a good name," he said.

Her story brought back his own memories of the surface. He'd been a normal enough kid, but perhaps a bit nerdy. He was always more interested in collecting bugs or performing experiments with his chemistry set insead of playing baseball or tag. And he'd always preferred to do those things alone rather than with other children. They were always apt to ruin whatever experiement he had going at the time or wanted to do other things he had no interest in, like going to Saturday matinees or catching a game down at the ballpark.

Charlie liked to think his interests had broadened a bit by now, but in reality they hadn't by much. Science was still his primary interest and botany in particular, though, it did take a backseat to girls on occasion. Like now, for instance.

"How long have you been in Rapture, then?"

"Well we - Delta and I that is - came a few years ago when this place opened." Elizabeth plopped her elbows down on the table, and rested her chin on her hands. "I feel like so much has changed since we first got down here, but at the same time it feels exactly the same as the day we arrived."

Recalling her table manners, she quickly hoisted both of her arms from the table, and back into her lap. She shelled Charlie a nervous smile, as if to say "oops!", but she was silent.

"I guess when you come down to Rapture, there's only one corner of the universe you can be certain of improving, and that's your own self."

Leaning into the table, Elizabeth cocked her head sideways like a curious newborn kitten. "So, how about you? When did you come down here?"

Once he heard the orders come up, Jase pulled himself away from the sink and retrieved the tray from the counter, placing the steaming bowls of noodles on it. He managed to balance the tray on his hand and walk towards the entrance to the dining room, hitting the swinging door open with his hip on the way out.

He was so focused on getting the meals to the two seated and talking that he hadn't noticed the newcomers at the bar yet.

Jase stopped at the table and lowered the tray slightly, placing a plate in front of Elizabeth and a plate in front of Charlie, a surprisingly bright grin on his face. "You guys flag me down and let me know if you need anything else."

Retreating to the kitchen once more, Jase stopped in his tracks by the long counter in the front and shook his head with a quiet laugh. He slid his tray onto the countertop and rounded the bar area so he was standing across from the regular and his guest.

"Again, Arthur?"

Hell, he was just here... what was it... yesterday?

Charlie thanked Jase as he set the plates down in front of him and unraveled the cutlery from the napkin. Twirling the long noodles around his fork, he took a bite and chewed thoughtfully.

"It's been several years for me, too. I had Professor Langford in grad school and when she offered me a place on her team, I accepted it. There wasn't much for me on the surface, anyway, and I couldn't bring myself to turn this opportunity down."

He paused for a moment, taking another careful bite of noodles.

"Not nearly as interesting your tale, I'm afraid," he finally said with a smile.
