Flicking a random half-cooked noodle from his bright red outfit, Jase Soloman grabbed the tray of bowls and hoisted it up over his left shoulder. He carried it out to the large table in the corner and began to set each of the steaming hot meals in front of the customers -- all of them laughing and talking and pretty much ignoring him except for maybe a quick and absent thanks or a nod of the head when their bowl was set in front of them.

Jase scowled as he walked away. They'd better tip him well. He didn't like serving tables of at least ten people and getting a dollar or two extra for it.

And that was especially because of the way his family was living. Well, the part of his family was down in Rapture. He lived with his twin sister and their little brother in an apartment at Artemis Suites. Sure, it sounded nice, but their unit was pretty much shot to shit. Jase and Jane slept on cots in their rooms and Andy slept on their lumpy couch out in front of the television. The shower usually ran cold water and they all worked different jobs at different times of the day, scrounging up all the money they could and pooling it together for rent and food.

Thanks to their parents, they were stuck down here.

Using his sleeve to wipe the sweat from his brow, Jase let out a quick sigh before heading back out to take the order of another table.

Tying Delta to the railing of the walkway outside "The Happy Noodle", Elizabeth scratched behind his ears. He licked his owner's beautiful face before she began to push him away.

"I'll be back soon. Hang in there, chief." She said, rising to her feet and stepping inside.

"The Happy Noodle" was extremely busy, but what did she expect? It was around noon and a lot of workers were on their lunch break. All the hustle and bussle reminded her of the Fisheries. This thought didn't settle well...after all today was her day off.

She sunk down into a booth, and let out a heavy sigh. Looking around at all the waiters and waitresses scattering about from table to table made her wonder if she'd ever get served. The day's copy of The Rapture Standard sat on the table. "Someone must have forgotten it." Elizabeth assumed. She glanced over at the date, November 20th.

"As good a date as any other." Elizabeth thought to herself. Glancing through the paper she didn't see any articles worth reading. She missed the Archie Comics. The Rapture Standard wouldn't publish them. They wouldn't publish anything from the surface. Folding the paper back up, she grazed it with the tips of the fingers on her right hand and slid it back over to the corner amongst the salt and pepper shakers. "Bah! Maybe they took one look at it and left it here on purpose." She figured.

Looking out the window she saw two children - a boy and a girl. Very young - couldn't be more than eight years old. They were playing hopscotch, but stopped when they saw Delta tied to the railing. Walking over, the little boy emptied out his pockets. Inside was a crumbled of bag of potato chips. Unfolding it, the boy began to feed some of the chips to Delta. The little girl walked over and joined them.

"Christ," sighed Elizabeth, "He's getting served before I am."

Inhaling deeply, Charles Bannerman stepped across the threshold of Happy Noodle. His stomach growled with impatience as the enticing aroma wafted about his nose. There was something about this place. His last meal had occurred only three weeks, but for Charlie it felt like an eternity. He had no idea what they put in the food--and realized it was probably better not knowing--but whatever it may be, it was extrememly addicting.

Usually the lab ordered take out if they were working long nights or pushing through reports, but tonight Professor Langford was meeting with Mr. Ryan. After spending thirty-six hours straight at the Research Center, Charlie decided he could use a change of scenery.

Standing in queue behind a blonde woman, he stretched his arms and stifled a yawn. He was tired. Well, exhausted, actually. In nearly two days he'd only managed to sleep maybe three hours. Charlie understood what an honor his position was--the Professor had handpicked him personally to join her team in Raputre-- and knew how many other grad students would kill for an opportunity like this, but sometimes it was a lot more difficult to be grateful than others. And this, he thought, is one of those times.

Everything seemed to be going wrong lately. Trees were dying and they couldn't explain why. Several of the older trees in the facility were currently exhibiting symptoms of this unexplained epidemic, and many of the saplings had either died of had their growth stunted by it. If this continued, it would have a severe impact on the oxygen supply of Rapture.

Still lost in thought, Charlie absentmindedly moved foward in the line and brushed into the woman in front of him.

"I'm so sorry Miss," he apologized. Stifling another yawn, he smiled tentatively. "I, uh, guess I should watch where I'm going. "

As Elizabeth turned to Charles Bannerman, she pushed a twisted strand of bright hair out of her face. Her lips were pucked together as a smile soon found itself plastered across her rosy cheeks.

"The service here is really slooooooooow", she dragged, "but the food is halfway decent." Before he could even respond, she let a deep breath exhaust out of her little button nose and giggled.

Stopping in front of the two new people who had entered the restaurant, Jase tried not to look as exhausted as he felt and inhaled deeply, forcing a smile.

"What can I get you both tonight?"

Hell, was he the only one working tonight? Sure seemed like it. Thanks, rest of the staff, for your truly amazing work.

Balancing an empty tray on his left hand, he gave up and tucked it under his arm as he looked at them both expectantly. The quicker he took their orders and got their food to them, the quicker he could move on to even more customers, collect more tips (hopefully), then finally go home and get some sleep.

It was then that Elizabeth realized this whole time she had not thought of what she wanted to eat. "Is it possible I waited so long to eat, that I'm no longer hungry?" she thought.

Now she began to wonder as she starred down at the Art Deco floor of "The Happy Noodle". Lost in a trance, her fingers rubbed over a pin buttoned to the left breast of her sweater. The pin was a tiny squirrel perched atop a branch. There was two little acorns on the branch and one in the creature's little copper mitts. All three of them were birthstones. The two on the branch were Ruby and Topaz - her father and mother's birthstones respectively. The acorn in the squirrel's hand was a gleaming Amethyst stone, Elizabeth Channing's birthstone. She was an only child, and the pin was a gift from her parents on her 18th birthday. Her family was not by any means wealthy, and as a result, Elizabeth always felt bad that her parents probably spent a lot of money to get her something nice for her big day. But it meant the world to her. She never wore it to work because that well, frankly that was messy business and she did not want to risk losing it. When she wore it, she felt like they were right there along side her...along side her like they never left.

Elizabeth tried to focus. She felt like she had kept Jase Soloman waiting forever as she starred off into space. Snapping back into reality, her eyes light up her face. "Tell ya the truth, I don't know." Feeling like a fool, she pressed on. "Today's my day off and I want to try something adventurous - any suggestions?"

As soon as she asked the question, she felt herself drifting back into thoughts of her parents...and a lot of other very different questions. "Why?" she thought. "It's been almost five years. Why does this still hurt as much as the day they died? Why do I still feel as lonely as that night after the funeral when I came home to an empty house? Why is it whenever someone dies, we think about the past?" Keeping all this to herself, she let all these thoughts out in a deep breathe, and looked back up at Jase Soloman.

"Then let me suggest the number eight for you," Charlie interrupted. "If you like things a bit spicy."

He smiled at Jase politely. Charlie ordered from here so often, he knew the kid's name.

"And I'll have the same."

"Eight, huh?" Elizabeth replied curiously. Unaware if she was talking to Charlie at this point, or herself. The young girl's eyes then shifted back over to Jase.

"Yes sir, eight sounds fine with me." She said, looking back up at the menu to confirm.

As she reached into the pocket of her sweater, she pulled out a handful of items and laid them on one of the tables nearby. There were several dollar bills - two tens, five or six two dollar bills, and three one dollar bills. Some of them were neatly folded, whereas others were crumpled and torn - some even with signs of water damage. In addition to the money, there was a sprinkle of poker chips, mostly orange in color. They had come from a game she played a few nights ago after work with Gil O'cullen, Samuel Gunther, Timmy Huddleston, and Peach Wilkins.

Dusting through, she pulled out a ten dollar bill from the ruins and straighted it on the edge of the table. As she handed it to Jase, her eyes were focused on Charlie. "Looks like we have a Happy Noodle connoisseur in our midst!" Elizabeth teased, as she began to fill her pocket back up.

He smiled. "I don't know about a connoisseur, but when it comes to Happy Noodle I'm no novice."

He handed Soloman several crisp bills from his wallet and indicated he needed no change. Jase was always good on his deliveries and Charlie could only imagine what life in Rapture would be like in his position. He liked the guy well enough and figured he should help where he could. He didn't believe in the parasite.

"I'm Charlie, by the way," he introduced, offering his hand.

"Lizzie!" The young lady exclaimed, extending her hand to Charles. She bobbed her to the side and smiled.

Unlike Charles Bannerman, Elizabeth signaled for her change. It's not that she didn't like to help people, but she worked hard for her money and spent only when she felt necessary.

Everything about her physical appearance was quite unadorned. She was dressed in a ratty folded funnel collared sweater of an insipid gray. It had deep pockets, and patches that stuck out like sore thumbs. Several rather large loose buttons ran down the front, and although they matched the sweater, they were in a word - tasteless. The white buttoned up shirt that followed underneath was clearly an excerpt from a man's wardrobe, along with the paisley tie that flopped down in front. There was a glistening silver chain that hung from the belt loop of her dingy corduroy pants into her right front pants pocket. Inside the pocket the shape of a large Stiletto folding knife was evident. Across in the other pocket was a handful of Best Friend Dog Treats. The cuffs of her pants folded to her feet, where a beaten pair of black and white Saddle Shoes with frayed laces, awaited. Yet despite her impoverished semblance, and utter disregard for feminine fashion, Elizabeth Channing was strangely beautiful.

She stood patiently and anticipated her change, before taking a seat at the table where she previously emptied out her pockets. There she waited for her lunch.
