These days Professer Julie Langford spent most of her days in Arcadia, or more specifically the Research Center. For the last few weeks, Langford had been closely monitoring the tree farm. Several trees on the west end of the plot had died and if her calculations were correct, at least three more would quickly follow. They ranged anywhere from elm trees to oak and even a walnut tree. Kneeling down at the base of the trunk, Langford scooped up a vile of soil, screwed on the lid and dropped it into a clear plastic bag. Scribbling a label across the top, she added the sample to the scufffed black case that somewhat resembled a tacklebox. "Now for the roots," she mumbled to herself with a shake of the head. Grabbing the shovel that leaned against the tree, Langford stood up and began to dig into the dark soil. She needed a sample of the roots before she could head back to the lab and begin testing. If this was some sort of tree epidemic, which all prior tests indicated, the entire Tea Garden was at risk. |
