"Now now, Herr Falkenstein, are you sure you want to do that? It's still the middle of the night, surely you will want to rest a bit more, and then perhaps in the morning?" Nevermind that all times were alike to Orloc. He picked his coffee mug back up, clink-scrape. He was teasing his patient a little, it was clear in his tone. |

"Is it? I find it very difficult to tell what time it is under all these bandages, you know." He might have given Orloc a good-natured leer. "Besides, do you think I'll be able to sleep now?" |

Orloc laughed, and a hand patted Falkenstein's knee. "Very well then, very well. I do not think it will trouble anything if we see early. One moment, if you please." The mug went down on the side table again, and the doctor stepped out to corral a night duty nurse with a tray of instruments. The young man was not exactly pleased to find himself required to do anything like work, at this hour, but followed a long anyway, at a winning entreaty from his superior. They returned to the room in a few minutes, which doubtless seemed like a year to Max. "Well. Are you sure then, Herr Falkenstein, that you are ready?" |

The slight metallic clinking of the instruments made Max's skin prickle with excitement though he could hear the nurse muttering unpleasant things under his breath as he worked at getting everything set up in the orderly sort of fashion Dr. Orloc liked. Being blind for several weeks had done wonders for his hearing and that not been bad to begin with. "Is this going to hurt?" he asked, though it seemed unlikely that an affirmative answer would make any real difference except spawn a request for some more painkillers beforehand. |

"It shouldn't, much. There might be some clinging, as the adhesive pulls off." There were a few warning snips, and then the feel of thin, cool metal slipping between the bandage and his skin. A few more business-style snips, and the feeling of cool, clinical air, as the bandages began to unwind. "My my my..." |

The typically dangerous scissors felt cool and comforting in contrast to the sticky warmth of the bandages. The air stung at first but his skin soon adjust to the feel of it. He winced as the doctor worked gently on a stubborn bit of bandage around the left eyebrow. Still, that smug tone in his voice was reassuring. "Pleased with your work, I see..." he tried a mild chuckle but it did little to undermine his nervousness. |

"Well..." After the last bit was cleared away, the doctor paused for a moment's reflection before holding a hand out wordlessly to the nurse. The nurse handed him a mirror, and he, in turn, held the mirror up before Falkenstein, so that the patient could gaze upon his transformation. "Ecco Deo." Pronounced the surgeon solemnly. |
