It was then that Elizabeth realized this whole time she had not thought of what she wanted to eat. "Is it possible I waited so long to eat, that I'm no longer hungry?" she thought.

Now she began to wonder as she starred down at the Art Deco floor of "The Happy Noodle". Lost in a trance, her fingers rubbed over a pin buttoned to the left breast of her sweater. The pin was a tiny squirrel perched atop a branch. There was two little acorns on the branch and one in the creature's little copper mitts. All three of them were birthstones. The two on the branch were Ruby and Topaz - her father and mother's birthstones respectively. The acorn in the squirrel's hand was a gleaming Amethyst stone, Elizabeth Channing's birthstone. She was an only child, and the pin was a gift from her parents on her 18th birthday. Her family was not by any means wealthy, and as a result, Elizabeth always felt bad that her parents probably spent a lot of money to get her something nice for her big day. But it meant the world to her. She never wore it to work because that well, frankly that was messy business and she did not want to risk losing it. When she wore it, she felt like they were right there along side her...along side her like they never left.

Elizabeth tried to focus. She felt like she had kept Jase Soloman waiting forever as she starred off into space. Snapping back into reality, her eyes light up her face. "Tell ya the truth, I don't know." Feeling like a fool, she pressed on. "Today's my day off and I want to try something adventurous - any suggestions?"

As soon as she asked the question, she felt herself drifting back into thoughts of her parents...and a lot of other very different questions. "Why?" she thought. "It's been almost five years. Why does this still hurt as much as the day they died? Why do I still feel as lonely as that night after the funeral when I came home to an empty house? Why is it whenever someone dies, we think about the past?" Keeping all this to herself, she let all these thoughts out in a deep breathe, and looked back up at Jase Soloman.
