Inhaling deeply, Charles Bannerman stepped across the threshold of Happy Noodle. His stomach growled with impatience as the enticing aroma wafted about his nose. There was something about this place. His last meal had occurred only three weeks, but for Charlie it felt like an eternity. He had no idea what they put in the food--and realized it was probably better not knowing--but whatever it may be, it was extrememly addicting. Usually the lab ordered take out if they were working long nights or pushing through reports, but tonight Professor Langford was meeting with Mr. Ryan. After spending thirty-six hours straight at the Research Center, Charlie decided he could use a change of scenery. Standing in queue behind a blonde woman, he stretched his arms and stifled a yawn. He was tired. Well, exhausted, actually. In nearly two days he'd only managed to sleep maybe three hours. Charlie understood what an honor his position was--the Professor had handpicked him personally to join her team in Raputre-- and knew how many other grad students would kill for an opportunity like this, but sometimes it was a lot more difficult to be grateful than others. And this, he thought, is one of those times. Everything seemed to be going wrong lately. Trees were dying and they couldn't explain why. Several of the older trees in the facility were currently exhibiting symptoms of this unexplained epidemic, and many of the saplings had either died of had their growth stunted by it. If this continued, it would have a severe impact on the oxygen supply of Rapture. Still lost in thought, Charlie absentmindedly moved foward in the line and brushed into the woman in front of him. "I'm so sorry Miss," he apologized. Stifling another yawn, he smiled tentatively. "I, uh, guess I should watch where I'm going. " |
