Plane Crash future to be decided as crunch talks loom16 June, 2011

Crunch talks are to take place about the future of Plane Crash - the ambitious plan by Channel 4, National Geographic and Dragonfly to crash a 300-seater plane into the Mexican desert.

The show was commissioned in 2009 but more than 18 months later the production team has not been able to gain permission from the appropriate authorities to stage the crash, and Nat Geo is understood to have got cold feet about the project.

Sources indicated that it is on the brink of pulling out, which could put the future of the planned two-hour special in doubt. One said: “They set a time limit on it and that has expired. It’s been a logistical nightmare.”

But National Geographic said it and its production partners were “committed to this ambitious project and are continuing to move ahead”.

Channel 4 also remains keen on the show.

A spokeswoman said: “Plane Crash is an ambitious and complex project, working with a team of top international scientists and broadcasters from around the world - and that is something that takes time to do right.”

Dragonfly declined to comment about the project.
