President Obama is set to tap CIA director Leon Panetta, center, to replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates, left. Gen. Petraeus, right, will be director of the CIA, according to reports.

President Obama reportedly plans to replace Defense Secretary Robert Gates with CIA Director Leon Panetta as head of the Pentagon.

He'll then move Gen. David Petraeus - who is now commanding the war in Afghanistan - into the chief CIA position.
Obama is expected to announce the major defense and intelligence shakeup on Thursday, administration sources told the Associated Press.

Gates, the only George W. Bush holdover in Obama's cabinet, announced last fall that he plans to retire by the end of this year. Panetta, a Democrat, had been long considered Obama's number one pick to replace him.

The changes are expected to take place during the summer.

The President also plans to swap Lt. Gen. John Allen for Petraeus to run the war in Afghanistan. Diplomat Ryan Crocker is expected to be named the next U.S. ambassador in Afghanistan.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said on MNSBC's "Morning Joe" that Obama's picks would make a "very strong team if that's how the president chooses".

"It would be like Ruth, Gehrig and DiMaggio," he added.

The changes would require Senate confirmation.

Some Washington insiders have suggested the Obama Administration wanted to put Petraeus into a high-profile position so he would not run against the commander-in-chief in 2012.
