Rove gets rave reviews for 9/11 speech By Bryon Saxton Standard-Examiner staff Last updatedFriday, February 4, 2011 - 9:05pm http://www.standard.net/topics/politics/2011/02/04/rove-gets-rave-reviews-911-speech ![]() LAYTON -- A firsthand account of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the nation, as told by Karl Rove, senior adviser to former President George W. Bush, kept 400 Republicans on the edge of their seats Thursday night. The 9/11 attack was one of several topics Rove touched on as keynote speaker for the Davis County Republican Party Lincoln Day Dinner at the Davis Conference Center in Layton. President Barack Obama's health care plan and the debt the country is facing were other topics touched on by Rove, who was an adviser to Bush from 2000 to 2007 and was deputy chief of staff from 2004 to 2007. "The room was completely quiet as (Rove) recounted the moments following the 9/11 attacks, as he walked up to the president at the elementary school and told him the World Trade Center had been hit," said Kaysville Mayor Steve Hiatt. Rove talked about the moments following the event and the unsung heroes who have worked in the White House and sacrifice their lives, incomes and personal assets just to respond to the president's request to serve, Hiatt said. The dinner event, which was closed to the media, cost $50 per person and included a copy of Rove's new book, "Courage and Consequence: My Life as a Conservative in the Fight." Before the dinner, Rove fielded questions from the media. But according to those who attended the dinner speech, Rove may have saved his most inspiring stories for his fellow Republicans. "Rove is an incredible speaker, with a tremendous depth of knowledge and insight," Hiatt said. "The Davis GOP couldn't have done a better job." Rove spoke on several critical issues important to the Republican base, including Obama's health care plan and the mountains of red ink that will come to the nation if that plan moves forward, Hiatt said. Longtime Davis GOP member Anne Christensen, of Bountiful, said Rove gave a good talk and then opened the evening up to written questions from the audience. One particular question Rove answered centered around the media portraying Bush as an idiot and how Bush was actually very smart, with Rove citing examples of Bush's intelligence, said Christensen. "Karl (Rove) is a phenomenal speaker," Layton resident Tom Clay said. Rove delivered both a depressing and encouraging speech, Clay said, but ended it on a hopeful note. "We can still solve some of the problems we have," Clay said, sharing what he gleaned from Rove's speech. But it seemed to be Rove's firsthand account of 9/11 that captivated the audience. "It was really a remarkable experience," said Rep. Stephen G. Handy, R-Layton. "He had us enthralled with his perspective." When Rove told what happened during the 9/11 attack on the nation, Handy said, "You could have heard a pin drop." Davis County Republican Party Chairwoman Shirley Bouwhuis said she was pleased with the event. "(Rove) was a fabulous speaker. He is funny, smart, he is very personable," Bouwhuis said. The stories Rove shared put the audience on the edge of their seats, she said. Rove also gave great insight on what is going on in the country, Bouwhuis said, and spoke of there being no designated Republican Party frontrunner for president at this time, but rather 12 strong potential candidates. "It was an enjoyable evening." |
