Rally to support locked-out Hamilton steelworkers Updated: Sat Jan. 29 2011 2:46:10 PM The Canadian Press http://toronto.ctv.ca/servlet/an/local/CTVNews/20110129/hamilton-labour-rally-110229/20110129/ ![]() Steel mills in Hamilton, Ontario (The Canadian Press/Frank Gunn) HAMILTON — Labour, community and political leaders are among thousands of demonstrators protesting at Hamilton city hall this afternoon. They're rallying in solidarity with about 900 steelworkers locked out more than 11 weeks ago by U.S. Steel in Hamilton. The workers at the former Stelco Hilton Works were locked out after refusing to agree to company demands for major changes in their pension plan. Rally organizers say they're hoping to make income security a "major election issue" in the next federal race, which could come as early as this year. Sid Ryan, president of the Ontario Federation of Labour, says the Conservative government has shown blatant disregard for workers in Hamilton and across Canada. He says Prime Minister Stephen Harper needs to put Canadian jobs and retirement first. Speakers at the rally include United Steelworkers International president Leo Gerard, Canadian Labour Congress president Ken Georgetti, and Hamilton Mayor Bob Bratina. |
