Sorry for my joke about gentle explosion being funny, I see what you are getting at now, you say it cascaded with little visible explosive energy. I would think they would use most of the powerful explosives in the core of the building and make the structure collapse assisted by gravity. So in a way you might be right about steel and concrete not travelling great distances. The only problem is that if you watch a demolition from say an old hotel in Vegas, the supports are knocked out and the building folds into itself, there still is a large amount of concrete dust in a cloud with a pile of rubble in the basement.
Thank you for your close attention. I agree with you about the
Vegas explosions. They do blow out a bunch of dust.
But also notice that the dust cloud doesn't behave in
the same way that we see in the videos of the destruction
of the WTC. Vegas explosions also resolve themselves right
away. They don't fume for months. Neither do nuclear explosions.
