HAL is just IBM shifted over a letter. 33 degrees is based on the Compass Rose of 32 degrees which signifies the directions around a circle. It was originally 8 directions of the winds and then was subdivided. The 33rd is just 1 again, the first degree of another loop around. His wordplay is mindless. No different than Jordan Maxwell. His made-up history and interpretation of religion is nothing but a display of ignorance. He`s a complete flake. It stands for Heuristically-programmed ALgorithmic Computer. Arthur C. Clarke explains (in all but the very earliest prints of 2001) that it is not true, and if he had realised it was adjacent to IBM he would have chosen another name.
