PROJECT X: RULES AND REGULATIONS

REGISTRATION AND APPLICATION

  • 1: Unlike some sites, on Project X you must join using your first name and if necessary, the first initial of your last name. Do not join using your character's name, or any other typical internet pseudonym. We wish names such as Jack R, not hoppybunny20. This makes it easier to maintain the suitable environment for posting.

  • 2: Please list a working IM client such as Yahoo Messenger or AIM. This is so that members of the game may communicate and set up Joint Posts, and so that administrators may contact you more easily.

  • 3: After registering for the game, visit either the Character Archive to find currently unused but already created characters to adopt, or work on your own canon or original character using the sample application provided. Once your finished application is submitted, you will hear back within 24 – 48 hours in most cases.

  • 4: Once your character is approved and moved to the Cerebro database, you will be allowed to post in the game forum. Until that time, you will only be able to post in the general out of character areas of the game.

  • 5: If you have not submitted an application or spoken to an administrator within three weeks of joining the game, your account may be deleted to save room. If this happens, you may re-register to try again.

  • 6: We do allow advertisement for other games in THE BACKWALL. There you may post links to other sites even as a guest. However, any inappropriate subject material will be removed. Please also ensure that if you post a link to your site on ours that you allow us to do the same.

PERSONAL INTERACTION

  • 1: Disrespect or insult towards anyone’s race, sexuality, religion, or person will not be tolerated. You must respect other people in general even if you do not particularly care for them. Do not flame or attack anyone, and if you have a genuine problem with a person, either attempt to handle it personally with them over IM, PM, or e-mail, or take it to an administrator and submit a complaint.

  • 2: Running a game is hard work. Please do not make it even more difficult by defying or antagonizing the staff. If you wish to discuss something with them concerning a problem, comment, or suggestion, feel free to do so via an IM, a PM on the board, or an e-mail. However, while we do desire feedback, continual arguing after a final decision has been made can result in punishment which, given the right provocation, could include ejection and banning from the site. The staff member will inform you if their decision is final after hearing you out.

  • 3: You must read the current and new threads that are posted within the ANNOUNCEMENTS area. If you do not, you will not know what is going on. Any questions that are answered by the announcements will be directed to the appropriate topic.

CONTINUITY

  • 1: This game is based upon a mixture of the comics and the films. The basic power levels and characters should be grounded in a movie-type reality, although we may allow certain differences. For example, it may be possible for Storm to be played as a teenage student, as in the Ultimate comic line. Some exceptions exist, such as Wolverine and Professor Xavier retaining their adulthood. If in doubt or before attempting something completely radical, please ask an administrator.

  • 2: We are following a comics-based storyline but we still value realism. As such, we are looking for more realistic stories and characters. However, certain approved references to magic, space, and other comics-only ideas may be allowed with approval from the administrators. Just don't go hogwild. You can be Pixie, girl mutant with some magic potential, but you can't be Dr. Strange, Master of the Incarnate.

CHARACTER SUBMISSION AND GUIDELINES

  • 1: When you apply to the game for your first character, you may choose either a canon (present in the comics, movies or other media) or an original (created by you).

  • 2: After one month of play and meeting or exceeding all posting requirements you may apply for a second character. Of these two characters, at least one must be canon. Therefore, if your first character is original, the second must be canon. If the first was canon, the second may be either original or canon.

  • 3: One month of play after adopting a second character, assuming you meet or exceed all posting requirements, you may apply for a third character. This third character may be either canon or original, so that of three characters, at least one is canon.

  • 4: Character Types

CANON CHARACTERS: If you wish to play a canon (already created in the comics) character, you should first check the database to be sure that the character is not already in use. Assuming they are not, you can then check the Character Archive to see if a profile has been created already for them and may now be adopted. If no profile for the character has been created, you should create one yourself by filling out the blank application.

You may find information on canon characters by checking the mutant database at www.uncannyxmen.net or at www.mutanthigh.com. They have even the most obscure characters listed, so you're sure to find something suitable.

As this game follows a more realistic telling than most comics, certain aspects on canon characters might be altered to fit this continuity (such as admin approval of magic and aliens), but make certain NOT to change the character completely from the original concept. In other words, we would rather you not alter certain aspects of their lives such as gender or powers without the approval of admin. Something like this should be discussed with admin first, and you must have a good reason for such changes.

ORIGINAL CHARACTERS (OCs): You may submit an original character, or a mutant of your own design. Since this character obviously won't be listed anywhere, just go ahead and start filling out the blank application. Remember that some powers will be restricted. As of right now, that list is as follows:

    • Precognition – Banned unless a canon character such as Blindfold OR unless approved by an Admin, ASK first..
    • Time travel or control – Banned unless a canon character such as Tempo OR unless approved by an Admin, ASK first..
    • Telepathy – Banned unless a canon character such as Emma Frost OR unless approved by an Admin, ASK first..
    • Death-touch. Banned unless a canon character such as Wither OR unless approved by an Admin, ASK first..

Please note that the more original and unique the power set your character possesses, regardless of the list of restricted powers, the more likely they are to be approved. Even powers that are not restricted still may become overused, so we are always looking for something new and creative.

Note that clones will, in almost every case, not be accepted. But again, feel free to ask if you think your concept holds merit.

Also, all characters that have a history tied to another character, need to have their history approved by the person that plays that character. In the case of linking original characters to canon characters, the link must be approved by both the player and the administrative staff.

  • 5: NPC USAGE: Minor NPCs are permitted for casual and infrequent use. Characters such as shopkeepers, people on the street, etc. may be used without clearance, provided they create no profound or lasting impact on the game as a whole. A character's family members may also be used without approval. NPCs used for events such as an attack on the mansion, the assassination of a political leader, etc. are prohibited without storyteller or admin clearance. As with any standard character, control of the NPC is reserved for its creator.

  • 6: Character Guidelines

CHARACTER AGE: Most characters that are submitted will be students of High School or early college age. Be aware that this is a game for action and adventure, and so school-based activities will mostly be glossed over in exchange for field missions. Student characters can be as young as 10 years old, since that is the youngest age that a child can hit puberty and thus gain their powers. You may play any canon character that has not already been established as either a student or adult based on your desires and admin approval.

    Bio Requirements

    * IMAGES: No bio will be approved without at least one (and up to four) image(s) provided for the character. Having a picture added to the bio will enable other players to envision your character completely, making it easier for them to let their own characters interact with yours. These are also used for site avatars to identify you as a player.

    * SAMPLE POSTS: We desire a certain level of quality here at the site. As a result, you must include a sample post of your character so we can get a feel for your level of writing before approval. Our standards are slightly stricter than some, but this allows us to keep the quality of the site at a high level and thus provide enjoyment for all who make the effort, not simply all those who apply. Here are a few guidelines:
o Sample Posts must be at least four hundred words.
o Sample Posts should involve character dialog and interaction in order to see the behavior of the character.
o Sample Posts and the bio in general must be SPELL CHECKED. If we see a lot of mis-spelling we will return the application to be correctly checked.
o As always, plagiarism is strictly prohibited.

POST REQUIREMENTS

  • 1: POST LENGTH: All IC posts need to be at least 200 words in length, but should usually aim to surpass that minimum amount. Under no circumstances may you write a single-line post. One-Liners will result in an automatic warning. The reason is that these posts are boring and often frustrate the players and Storytellers. When writing, please think of how your character is reacting to things, and write it. People do more than just say lines - they think, remember, feel, etc.

    • Note: All posts or JPs over 5,000 words must be split roughly every 5,000. In other words, 7,000 word JP or single Post must be split into two, and a 13,000 word post should be split into three. Please find a natural break in the JP or post in order to do this, so that a post breaks around 'They ran home' and the next one begins 'Once home, they found a duck.' rather than cutting it in the middle of a thought, such as 'They ran home. Once home, they' As long as each post is cut roughly at the five thousand mark, it is good.

  • 2: POST COUNT: A player is also responsible for a minimum of 2 posts per week, per character that he has. More posts are both wanted and appreciated, but the minimum must be reached at least most of the time. If the requirements are not met, you may not apply for more characters, may lose experience, and (if the case is severe) may even lose the character.

  • 3: JOINT POSTS: While JPs are not mandatory, due to their longer-than-standard nature, each JP will count as 2 posts towards each character's weekly requirements. Additionally, even when doing Joint Posts (JPs), please make sure they do not solely consist of one-liners being tossed back and forth like a ping pong game. At times, a conversation will run most naturally when each JP addition is only one or two sentences long, but make such passages the exception, not the rule in your JPs. Even while 'only' talking to another character, your character is going to think, feel, hope, wonder etc. - add some of those internal proceedings to give the post flavor.

  • 4: ABSENCES: We're not tyrants, and we understand that sometimes life just has to butt in. Should you require a break for any reason--from health, to vacation, to simply wanting some time off--all you have to do is ask. Simply post a notice in the ABSENCES forum and, if possible, write your characters out of any threads they may be in to keep from hampering any other character's progress. If your computer breaks, messages can be posted from cell phones, library computers, workplaces, or any other number of situations. Post a notice as soon as you are able, preferably within the first week, and keep us updated as you are able. If you are absent without notification for longer than a month, your character will be written into the background and ignored until you return. You will also need to reapply for the character after such absences. If this occurs with a canon character, someone else may apply for them in that time.

  • 5: READING: While this may not be strictly monitored, it is important for your own sake that you read threads other than the ones in which you are participating. The events in each and every thread that is posted may have an effect on the other characters. In order for you to understand the goings-on of the game world and present your characters in a corresponding light, it is imperative that you set aside the time to simply read. After all, where the sense is in joining an RPG consisting of written words when one isn't prepared to read what is being posted?

POST GUIDELINES

The English Language

* This is a high level RPG, meaning that we expect a certain level of writing skills from our players. Don't be intimidated, but understand we want good stories. Please adhere to the common rules of vocabulary (use a thesaurus), grammar (try phrasing your sentences in ways that make people want to read them), punctuation, and spelling (spell check is a MUST!).
* Writing in English means exactly that: English. Net speak is not English. LOLs, BRBs, GTGs, etc. are unacceptable and greatly diminish the quality of this site. There are times when its use may be warranted, for example, when a character is sending an e-mail or text in-game. However, frequent and casual use in any inappropriate manner will result in one warning and one warning only.
* Plagiarism is an intolerable offense. Should it be discovered that you are using another persons' words or posts, you will be banned from the site immediately. This is non-negotiable.

Character Interaction

* All major plots MUST be approved by the staff. A major plot is defined as one involving three or more players, or one with a profound impact on the game (i.e. attacks on the mansion, assassination attempts, etc.).

* In-game rules (such as curfews, dress code, laws, written and unwritten school rules etc.) must be followed, or the character will suffer the in-game consequences if caught - and in a universe with telepaths around, just how likely do you think getting caught might be? As such, there will be retribution. Please consider this when you compose your posts and JPs. At times, a character might have pushed the boundaries of what society can or cannot allow too far and too many times. In that case, a leading character will threaten the character with IC consequences that might make the character unplayable for you. If you cannot 'reel the character in' after that, the next logical step at a recurring offense will be that it suffers the consequences. In that case (unless it is part of a plot scheme that has been cleared with the STers beforehand and was approved by the admins), the player will lose the character in question and the character (if a canon character) will be placed up for adoption once again, not to be adopted out to his or her previous player due to the offense of making the character nearly unplayable. OCs will simply be 'sent away' IC and then, be phased out. The characters can no longer be played in our RPG.

* NO AUTOING OTHER PLAYERS' CHARACTERS, and this holds true for both combat and non-combat situations. In other words, do NOT control other players' characters in any way, shape or form. Do not control the other characters' actions, thoughts or dialogue. Control ONLY your character. Do NOT even control NPCs used by other players, especially the Storytellers. The only one exception to this rule is if your character has the power to control the mind and/or actions of another (Mind Control) or the ability to reposition someone (telekinesis & teleportation) and even then you must ask permission before execution. In order to work around this and allow the other players to decide for their own characters later, write your actions as attempts rather than successes.

* Generally, players will be allowed to write their own damage, and they should do so in accordance with the situation. Your character is not invincible, and while they can try to dodge as much as they want, eventually, something will hit. A moderator may hurt or even kill a PC if the player fails to account for damage taken during a fight and the storyteller absolutely has to do so.

* We are not running a snuff game. We will not go out of our way to kill or permanently maim your character, although the life your character leads will likely place him or her in the path of danger. However, realism dictates that pressing your luck or making blatantly foolish decisions will jeopardize your character's well-being. So if you have your non-flying character take a suicide jump off a cliff, you might want to have a new character in mind before you go splat.

A moderator may (at very rare occasions) kill a character (if that character was written into a place they can't escape, and only then, so DO avoid writing your character into such a position, please) or a player may kill their own OC - but death is final. Any resurrections must be cleared through the Moderators and don't expect it to happen unless you have that story line pre-approved by the GM. Players can not kill canon characters without prior consent of the Administrators.

* Do not ignore the actions of other players. We all play to have fun, and if you ignore others, then it is not fun for them. Please remember that no one is constantly on guard. Please, allow other characters to surprise your character, pull pranks, etc every so often. Anyone that plays their character as infallible or otherwise omnipotent will receive a warning and could have to deal with further consequences if the problem continues, such as losing experience.

* Along the same lines of interaction being paramount, we ask that there be very little JPing with yourself, meaning a string of interaction between two characters you yourself wield. You may on occasion have your characters speak to one another, but these posts will only count as one for one of the characters involved. If you control Cyclops and Storm and write a post of them interacting, you must choose one of them to gain the post credit, and you may only gain one post credit per week in this fashion. Even if you post them interacting in five different posts, only one counts and only toward one character. Spread out your characters and make sure to interact with other players and their characters.

* During plot times, when your character is part of a storyteller thread, do NOT post more than one action-taking post before the storyteller has had a chance to go again. You may post as many 'introspective, thinking/feeling/speaking to people who talked to you' posts as you like, but do NOT post your character taking an attack action and then yet another before the storyteller posted again. Along the same lines, do NOT post the results of the actions your character took, only write him or her attempting to do what they are doing. If they are trying to hit the bad guy or escape or whatnot, tell us what they are trying to do and how they try to achieve their goal, and the storyteller will, in his or her next post, mention which result those actions had.

* Even during non-plot posting, please be aware of a little courtesy thing called 'posting order'. In each thread that you don't only occupy with your own character but in which other characters are present as well, people post in an order that is being established as the thread develops. Unless a player goes unresponsive and hasn't shown their willingness to post in a dragging amount of time, it is only polite to adhere to said posting order and allow people to post in the established order. So please wait for people to post accordingly, and if you feel their character has fallen silent on you, try checking for the players on IM to see if they are planning to post anytime soon. Only if you cannot talk to them in person or there is an absence message posted by the player should you deliberately break the established order and post again before them.

POST FORMAT

The following is the coding for a correctly formatted post.

Code:

[b]Featuring:[/b] Your character's name and link to their profile. Note that if your character is approved, coding has been added so that simply writing their codename followed by a : will automatically create a link to their profile. For example, writing Cyclops: would automatically make a link to Cyclops’s profile without any further action being needed. If the post is a JP, list all characters participating with the links to their profiles.
[b]Date:[/b] The current day in the RPG
[b]Time of Day:[/b] The current time for your thread.
[b]Place:[/b] The location in which your thread takes place.

[hr]

Write your post here.

[hr]

Summary: A brief sentence detailing the events or actions in your post.
Tags: Any characters who are affected by or should respond to your post. List the character, not the player.

Optional inclusions

OOC MESSAGES: An optional OOC: line may be added below the Tags: line for OOC messages. Please use this sparingly and only if additional information or explanation needs to be given for the post. Do not use this OOC line to single out players by 'scolding' them for issues you might have had with their posting. If you have such qualms, use PM or IM to talk to the player you feel has misposted or alert an admin.
FOREIGN LANGUAGES: If your character speaks in a language other than English, please include a Translation: line below either Tags: or OOC:. This will allow us, the players, to follow along and enjoy the post.

Additional Guidelines

TENSE AND PERSPECTIVE: All posts must be made in the third person, past tense perspective. Example: Scott looked around the Danger Room wondering what the sound he had just heard could have been. With a tone that denoted his leadership he called out "Who’s there? Make yourself known or be judged a threat." Scott received no reply, so he headed towards where he had heard the sound, ready to fight whatever threat the room had in store for him.
SMILEY USAGE: Smilies are considered an unnecessary distraction. While permitted in OOC posts, their use is prohibited in the RPG portions of the site. We understand that these may occasionally happen unintentionally. To fix this problem, simply uncheck the "Enable emoticons?" box on the Post Reply or Edit Post pages.
CONVERSATION: Please use the following methods to denote the respective forms of verbal communication.

* Quotes: "My character is speaking."
* Italics: My character is voicing his thoughts to himself.
* Italicized Quotes: :: My character is speaking telepathically. ::

Thank you for reading and complying with these rules. Please understand that while we will first attempt to work out any minor problems that may arise, we will take appropriate action when necessary. If you still have questions or comments, try contacting a member of the staff.

FINAL NOTE:

Project X is rated R, mostly for language and violence, though adult situations may definitely arise from time to time. Posts that contain strong sexual material must be posted to the appropriate sub-forum in the RPG section of the game and may be subject to editing or removal by the administration if left in another section, depending on content. By submitting an application to Project X you are stating that you are at least 17 years of age or of legal age to view R-rated material at your location. The administration shall not be held responsible for any misrepresentation of age or character.

The final, and in some ways most important rule on ProjectX is to have fun. If you have an idea that you think would be cool, feel free to run it by the Admin team. If you have something awesome you want your character to accomplish, tell us about it and we'll see if we can work with you. Above all, remember that a game is played to be enjoyed, and if you do everything in your power to work with us, we will do everything in ours to work with you.
