Melanie walked quickly down the brightly lit hallways of the facility. She wanted to get started on her newest project before whoever her new partner arrived. She frowned at the thought of working with some one else. Why couldn't they have just let her handle the project? Or assign an intern to assist? The name of her new partner wasn't even in the files she'd been given that outlined her newest assignment.
She shook her head and scanned her access card, releasing the locks of the door with a faint click. As she'd predicted, the lab was empty. Nothing had been set up.
A box containing detailed files was set on one of the lab tables, to the right, a second table, that would be used for tests was encased by re-enforced glass, the code panel to disengage the locks on the door would have to be typed in to enter the area. A desk containing the required equipment, computers connected to the network mainframe and other needed material for the new project lay in wait to the left. She gripped the files she held to her chest and sighed.
"Why did they assign me a partner? I've never needed a partner before." She whispered and headed to desk. She set the files down and booted the computer.
"Melanie Lillith Summers, 372 dash 650. Research access P948." She said, laying her hand on the scanner and speaking into the microphone.
"Access granted. Welcome Melanie," the computer answered, the system fully booting up.
"I suppose until my new partner gets here, I can start going through the files." She walked over and grabbed the box of files from the lab table and set them next to the desk. She pulled the first file out and flipped it open, reading quickly through the data that had been provided, waiting calmly for her new partner to arrive.
Melanie just hoped that they hadn't assigned Sean Summers Scott to be her partner. The man made her nervous and his work ethic was deplorable. It was a wonder he ever got any research done at all. His laid back, unreliable behavior already cost him a promotion. Though there was no question that the man was brilliant, he was just lazy.
She set the file in front of her and glanced at the clock. If her new partner, whoever that was, was any sort of reliable, they had less than five minutes to arrive. She shook her head again and continued to go through the files.
