I'm making this thread just to keep up with everything. For those who don't know, Nottingham Castle was one of the last of Peej's strongholds to fall at the hands of GKR - in actual fact the event takes place in March 1194 but we can't manage that so we've moved it over to rp time October 1194. So keep that date in your head for reference! Of course as well as GKR besieging the castle we'll also need people on Peej's side fighting from the inside. To my understanding the siege is 3 days long, but I don't know whether we'll stretch it to that. Of course we're not exact by historical accuracy, hem hem, but still !

But for collections of information and resources on the siege, post them here...

I'll post a quick background to just why GKR besieged the place. You'll know that Prince John and King Richard aren't the closest of brothers; whilst King Richard was away on the crusades, he gave John land so John would remain quiet. But because Richard had no children at the time, John was his heir - naturally. One place John didn't have was Nottingham Castle, so in 1191...I think...he took it, despite the protests of other earls and the Queen. I think. After hearing of Richard's capture, John plotted with Philip II (King of France) to displace Richard.

When Richard got back...well...my history's a bit foggy at this point. But let's say he wants Nottingham Castle back, and Prince John is holding it. You sort of see the problem!

To reduce Nottingham Castle were sent David, Earl of Huntingdon and brother of the King of Scots, Ranulph, Earl of Chester, and William, Earl Ferrers. The sending of three earls to Nottingham may have been dictated by the knowledge that because of its position and reputed impregnability, a siege of Nottingham Castle could be difficult, absorbing time and money in its reduction. The Earl Ferrers, and to a certain extent the Earl of Chester, would have possessed invaluable local knowledge and could have called on the assistance of their tenants in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

On 13th March 1194 Richard had landed in England at Sandwich. Howden is silent on the king's movements during the next twelve days until he arrived at Nottingham. The Histoire states that Richard left Marlborough with a large army and retinue and made straight for Nottingham. Other chroniclers give an itinerary: Richard proceeded to London via Canterbury and Rochester, and left London arriving at Nottingham by way of Bury St Edmunds and Huntingdon. He was met at Huntingdon by William Marshall.

Basically David Ceannmhor (Earl of Huntingdon...well...Cambridge *cough*beeb*cough*), Rannie and Osric (if SV's up for it) were sent to Notts - but I think later on they're joined by more forces - read on...

The size of the army in knights and men, and the number of men in the Castle, are difficult to estimate. In medieval terms, Richard's forces were quite substantial, for Howden and the Histoire both tell of a large force. Not only had Richard his own men with him, but in addition probably those forces of William Marshall who had joined the king at Huntingdon. Also those other dignitaries who are mentioned later by Howden as attending the Council which followed the termination of the siege cannot have come empty-handed: Queen Eleanor, the Archbishops of Canterbury and York, the Bishops of Lincoln, Ely, Hereford Worcester, Exeter and Whithorn, and the Earls Warenne and Salisbury, and Roger Bigod. The only figures available are payments on the Pipe Rolls for sixty-six knights at Derby, sixty-seven knights at Nottingham, and an unknown number of horses, three of which were subsequently slain

If you want to read up on more about the siege (it also includes details about Tickhill, too) then here's a link:

If anyone has any more information, feel free to post! If anyone wants to correct anything then do so ;)

Because this isn't in a while and our occasional Time Jump (if you don't know what that is, shout in cbox or pm one of my accounts) is taking place first, here's the link to the jump thread so you know:

aw kenny did you do a lot of research? sorry...i've done tonnies, i basically know exactly how the battle will go, how much pitch they had, when GKR arrived...stuff like that...

truth be told nearer the time (we're jumping to april, and then hopefully to september if i have anything to do with it) i will send PMs out to those involved (on the outside it'll be mainly kenny, moony, andrea, sv, gemmie and ska for Maud etc...on the inside it's mainly me plus the mercenaries)...

if anyone still has noblewomen dondering around the castle for the course of the siege you will be expected to help with the wounded, and possibly operated mangonels on the battlements if things get desperate...

and yes, i promise faithfully, i will type up all the stuff i have...and i have A LOT!

Yes...intricate planning for squiege ^_^ ...

Welshie is a goddess for doing all that research! *three cheers for Welshie* And Kenny is a rock star for starting this thread *glomps Kenny*

And yes, in case people need a reminder (or really...so I can look back and be reminded), I'll have:

David, Earl of Huntingdon/Cambridge in RP land at squiege, and then the Walter brothers (what? I tell you, if beeb can steal Huntingdon from David, I can have Theo at the council!) at the council. And you know, tons of made up charries will be there, too *cough James, Bertie, Greg, Reggie, Bloddy - poor Alasia stuck in the castle cough*

...And hangings. Don't forget about the hangings...

is it april yet?

i really can't put this off any longer...

Day One: Early hours of the morning (still dark) the Assaulting Army (AA) will commence bombardment with trebuchets and such...

At dawn the first assault will begin, Northumbrians from the South (the main gate they use in the show), where most of the mercenaries will be waiting and the hardest fighting will occur on the first day...they'll be backed up by Derby's forces in reserve...

Ran and David's men will be going over the northern walls, as soon as enough of the bombardment has occured to weaken the foundations...

The Defending Army (DA) will begin their own battery at dawn when they are attacked...Peter's engines also include the sort of weight system that Orli useed in KOH to bring down the siege towers...

[basically, this is going to be Helms' Deep meets the Fall of Jerusalem]

At the end of Day One, the outer walls will have fallen to the AA, but that's the closing, as it were...many if the streets will still be held by the DA...

Day Two:

The battle continues and the forces are pushed back. (lots of skirmish style fighting a la insurgency forces)

Mid-afternoon the retreat is complete and the portcullis goes down.

GKR arrives.

the DA fires arrows down from the castle, not believing that it's really the King...

GKR gets angry and launches an assault on the castle...it fails, but only just...

GKR orders the hanging of the prisoners taken in the fall of the town...

Nightfall...

Day Three:

After strenuous persuasion in the castle, the commander surrenders the castle to GKR and throws himself on his mercy...

**

that's it in a nutshell, with as much of the angst and character stuff left out as i could...
