It wasn't a kiss shared with other men. In every other kiss for every other man, there was always purpose, always a reason, a build-up, a promise of something else whether that promise was more of the same to follow or simply encouragement or understanding. She could kiss Gruff, though, the way her father used to kiss her mother - in greeting, in passing, the way couples could kiss one another because there was a tenderness of affection between them and a desire to show it without it needing to be any more than that.
